  • Toe box too wide. Hard deck provides little cushioning. Laces impossible to adjust.
Size: 11 Color: Aluminum/Marlin
I like the way the outer heel extends up the center back, to prevent heel becoming detached. I don't like the fact that the laces are all but unadjustable, and there is very little finger room to grasp them and pull to tighten. Tightening the laces isn't easy, & loosening them is equally difficult. The struggle to move a lace 1/2" along actually hurts my fingertips. As such, taking these shoes off and on is inconvenient. It's much more difficult than it should be. The laces must be tightened and loosened one hole at a time, and this is impossible to do towards the toe. The stiff shoe body should provide excellent support, and would, except that tightening laces is such a difficult and time consuming problem, that I tend to leave them as they are, which allows my foot to slide further into that "roomy" toe box and creates a 2-finger gap at the heel. Even going down hill shouldn't allow this shift. FIT IS NOT LIKE MY REGULAR SIZE! At home, I spend most of my time barefoot or in my stocking feet. Over a lifetime, my toes have fanned out and I hate the feeling of pinched or confined toes I get from many shoe styles I have tried. , including my last pair of Merrill hiking shoes. This excessive room at the toe of the Moab 2 is a surprising feature, one I wish I had investigated further before I ordered these. I read "roomy toe box" & thought "that's me!" Over all, my feet are a medium width, though I have sometimes purchased a wide if the toe box of a shoe I like seems confining. After my experience with Merrel hiking shoes in a size 10 1/2, I expected a much better fit in these size 11, as well as more support and comfort built into these shoes. The lack of padding on the deck of the shoe is reallydisappointing. The purchase of an insert should provide more foot comfort, better arch support, and minimize back and forth movement in the shoe, which these shoes lack right out of the box. The last pair of Merrells I purchased were a size 10 1/2. They were too tight in the toe and a bit too short, giving me blisters on the tips of my toes just walking around the house. I expected these size 11 to be a good fit. They aren't. To tighten up the fit, I purchased "Performance insoles" rated to add maximum cushioning and medium arch support. I placed them under the rigid plastic Merrell removable insoles. Although the ( Sof Sole Insoles Women's AIRR Orthotic Support Full-Length Gel Shoe Inserts) provide additional arch support and some cushioning, I only see gel in the heel, and my heel still still isn't secure, in the shoe, though it is not 2 fingers forward anymore. It still moves up and down in the shoe, and with the added insoles there is less ankle support as the additional arch is raising the foot. . I do hope that the shoes tighten up around the foot once they're broken in. The added insoles are easy to remove. The vibram outer soles seem like they will be very good for the terrain I visit, and may be the best feature of this shoe. Lastly, the color doesn't really look like it does in the listing photo. The leather is much lighter, sort of an antique white suede. Not the grreyish color of aluminum I expected. The accent color is green, not blue as it appears in the listing. That doesn't concern me at all, but I thought it worth mentioning. These are really well made, and could be outstanding shoes on someone's feet, but unfortunately, not on mine. If I hadn't been wearing them around the house to break them in, I'd send them back. Out of the box, they fit like my Mom's size 12 W she bought when her feet were swollen. And my normal shoe size is 11. These Moab2 are at least 1/2 size larger than that, and IMO, they are more like a 12. ... show more

  • This is very high quality hiking shoe
Size: 8 Wide Color: Smoke
If you are serious about hiking, you got to have this shoe. We have just returned from ten days hiking trip in Arizona mountains and my wife said she wouldn't be able to move on trails without this shoes. She is hiking beginner and we would usually do some easy trails and she would use just regular tennis shoes. This time she asked me to order this shoes and this was right move. Not too heavy, comfortable, strong grip. She always fall, even on flat surfaces, but not this time, not a single time, even just small slip on red rocks in Arizona . Amazing shoes! ... show more

  • Great Hiking Shoe
Size: 8 Wide Color: Smoke
After all the rains here in California, I needed these for the trails I walk on.......not quite hikes but I anticipate they'll be great for that. Plus Merrell is a trusted brand. The mesh part is a little bluer than I expected but I am getting used to it and like them very much. I always switch out the inner sole for orthotics in my running shoes and usually Spenco underneath but I haven't tried that, yet. I wear a 2E in New Balance due to bunions and these are just right. They are roomy in toe box but not overly so. ... show more

  • Best hiking shoes as long as you change the soles.
Size: 7 Color: Smoke
On first trying the shoes they were super uncomfortable. I soon realized it was on the sides of my feet. I took out the soles to look at them. They are made of some type of plastic that is hard and not flexible. I just exchanged them with some of my tennis shoes. It made a world of difference. These shoes needed no breaking in! After a 4 mile hike my feet didn’t even hurt. I walked through some mud and puddles and my feet were dry. It was 30 degree weather so with some wool socks they were so warm. I even wore them to the airport bc they were taking up room in my suitcase. Totally comfortable! I would have given it a 5 star if the soles were different. But definitely recommend!! Also upon reviewing the other reviews I sized down half a size and I had plenty of space for my toes ... show more

  • Comfortable, good grip, great price now that Moab 3 is out
Size: 9 Color: Taupe
This is an older model, but it's still a great pair of hiking shoes, and the price is great. My wife replaced her old hiking shoes with these, and is so much happier with these, mainly with the great grip. She likes them so much, she ordered another pair for backup. We spent the last two weeks hiking in Utah and Nevada. Other than on icy ground, the shoes provided great grip on rocky / sandy slopes and even some loose gravelly paths. For ice, you'll still need microspikes or crampons, of course. They're quite comfortable too, enough that she didn't mind leaving them on when she's not hiking but just walking around. Other than that, there's nothing exceptional about them in terms of weight, looks, etc. Personally I prefer the waterproof version, but she prefers these as she thinks these have better ventilation. ... show more

  • Wanted to love this shoe
Size: 7.5 Color: Smoke
I have a narrow foot. This shoe was big on my foot. The outside rim of shoe rubbed the outside of my ankle. I really wanted to like this shoe. I walk in rough terrain, this shoe was good for that. The shoe is well made. I wish it fit my foot. I gave 5 stars because it is not the fault of the manufacturer my foot is small. ... show more

  • Comfortable hiking shoes for wide feet and warm weather
Size: 6 Wide Color: Smoke
Comfortable hiking shoes for wide feet and warm weather. Since they are a breathable shoe and not a boot these are great for warmer weather adventures. However if you need more ankle support - get the boot instead.

  • Love these shoes!
Size: 7 Wide Color: Smoke
These shoes fit me perfectly. My regular shoe size is 7 wide so they fit true to size. They are great when hiking. The toe box is not too small and I have plenty of room for movement.
