  • A perfect boot that is roomy and ideal for those with sensitive feet
Size: 11 Wide Color: New Olive/Gum
I'm a picky old man who just had to throw away the pair of leather hiking/work boots that I have had for more than 25 years. I have an extra-wide foot and have foot neuropathy (pain and sensitivity). I also have serious back problems. All these things combine to make buying any kind of shoe or boot a problem. I read the reviews on this boot and it talked about them being "roomy". I thought that was a strange way of describing any kind of footwear. However, after trying these on I knew exactly what they meant. My neuropathy means that any pressure anywhere on my foot is going to bother me. My normal shoe size is 10-1/2. When I wear boots, I always wear extra-thick socks, usually wool. So I bought a 1/2-size larger 11-wide pair of boots. As soon as I tried them on, I understood the concept of "roomy". Before tightening the laces, there was space everywhere, if that makes sense. They weren't tight in the toes, or the width or across the top of my foot, or in the heel. The way the laces and general boot design are it allowed me to tighten the boot to fit all parts of my foot just right. No extra pressure on my sensitive feet! The boots are not ultra-light, but they are light enough for my old legs. Once tightened, they have a solid feel about them. The soles of the boots are almost sticky and grip maybe a little more than I would like. However, from a safety point of view, this solid grip feel will be ideal when hiking, but it may feel a little weird when walking around the house. It's not a problem, just different. They are perfect for their intended use. I have a high arch, and these come with quite a high arch, almost a solid removable insole. Since I didn't feel the arch was high enough, I ordered a pair of high-arch insoles. After I ordered the new insoles, I pulled out the original ones and was surprised by how high the stock insole arch is. I don't think my replacements will be any higher. Bottom line is these boots are just about perfect for me. I doubt they will last 25 years but I am extremely pleased with them. ... show more

  • Great, but not waterproof
Size: 10.5 Color: Earth
Let's be honest, these are great, comfortable, breathable, nice looking, long lasting (tough), light, tru to size, did I mention confortable? but NOT water proof, they can keep you dry on a regular rain exposure, but as soon as you step in a poodle deep enough to cover above the sole, you'll get water inside, not much but enough to be annoying. Don't take me wrong, I've bought 3 pairs of these and I think 2 of Moab 2 because I have accepted the fact they aren't waterproof, maybe we could say they are water resistant, but all the other things I like are enough for me to keep buying this boots, each pair lasts me around 2 years. (I'm a biologist and go out a lot to hot and cold places). Might someday try the GTX version but they still are out of my budget. PD. "New Earth" keeps better the shade of color than the "Earth" one wich turns to a grey like brownish tone. ... show more

  • Super comfortable, but, buy one size larger for best fit
These Merrell boots are very comfortable. I love how they fit and the toe box is roomy and my toes don't get smashed while hiking downhill. I have several different Merrell boots and shoes, and one thing I've found they all have in common is being one size small. My shoe size is 13W, and a Merrell in a size 14W fits me perfectly. So, buy one size larger and you'll be glad you did. Good looks, light weight, super comfy and of course, waterproof. This is a terrific boot, top quality. ... show more

  • narrow toe box on boot is uncomfortable
Size: 8.5 Color: Olive/Gum
I hike 4 miles everyday, rain or shine, snow or clear skies. For the past 90 days. 28 miles a week, approximately 112 miles a month or more. Anyway, got these boots 3 days ago, wore them twice on that four mile hike. The construction of the boot is good, it reminds me of a stretchy thick reinforced nylon sock. Don't know how waterproof it is yet but I can say that the comfort is off some. In my opinion the boot is too narrow, narrower than it should be and if it was a bit wider it would probably be more comfortable. I was wearing a pair of Nike Air Monarch's to do this daily 4 mile hike, sometimes I wear Carlsbad Wolverine boots, even wore a pair of Everboots and none of those caused my feet any damage, but these tight toed shoes, although they have outstanding treads on them, made my small toe on my right foot bleed long enough for a quarter sized stain on my sock. Which surprised me because I didn't exactly feel it and I the fact the material of the boot is so stretchy (it's not exactly the same as a pair of leather boots). I usually get foot wear a 1 size larger than my foot size, especially with Steel Toed boots, but with this pair of hiking boots I figured I'd go with 1/2 size larger but these boots run small in the toe area and squeeze your toes, the whole boot is basically like that. Walking on pavement there is so much tread on it that it feels like the heels are higher than they should be and the balls of the foot area is not very well padded. I put on a pair of thick wool socks but I had to squeeze my foot in the boot and it made it uncomfortable so I put on a thin pair and it was manageable. The thing is the boots are warm, even in 25 degree weather so I didn't need thick socks, in fact the boot fit best when I had no socks on at all but I'm not hiking 4 miles with no socks on. What sucks about buying boots online is that if they don't fit you have to go through the hassle of sending them back and ordering another pair, when that pair arrives it might not necessarily fit either, not the way you expect. Like I said, I've had the boots for 3 days, walked 8 miles over 2 days in them, the boots made my small toe bleed but without pain, but the treads give me so much traction that my legs don't get tired as fast and I have more endurance so it's a trade off. I'm hoping that over time the boots will stretch some and fit better, I'll just have to keep wearing them and find out. What I should have done is looked for this pair of boots or a another type of Merrill boots at a shoe store locally and tried on 1 size larger like I normally get. It's a case of live and learn, it's good to be certain that is for sure. ... show more

  • Best boots I've ever bought.
Size: 10 Wide Color: New Beluga
Absolutely wonderful boots! I bought these based upon a review in the NY Times by a woman who's had them for several years and swore by them. I had to return the first pair because they were too tight, and immediately bought another pair in 10W, and man, what a difference! My toes have room to move, and I can wear them all day without any discomfort or fatigue. I found out later that these boots are best sellers, with people purchasing multiple pairs over the years, and I sure understand why. There's been some discussion that they are not really waterproof, but I don't care. I'll wear these until they're worn out, and then buy another pair. Great, great boots, and well worth the cost! ... show more

  • Fit great and very comfortable
Usually, I have a hard time to get good fitting shoes or boots. From the first, these fit well. Used them for short walks a couple of times and then did a long hike. Great boots! Never had and issue. May get a second pair.

  • Merrell continues to impress.
Size: 9 Color: Earth
My fourth set of Merrell boots; this time ankle-high. Comfortable from day one. I overtightened the laces next to my toes which caused some delayed pain in my big toe; but once I relaxed them there have been no issues. Have walked many miles since purchasing and I would buy again. Well made product, sizing was spot on, weight was just right for this type of boot. ... show more

  • Best boot I've had
Best boot I've worn. Worked great for shoveling snow. Went hiking along side a slushy lake and didn't even get damp, but I never went above the ankle line in water. Extremely comfortable even after a couple hours moving around in them. Nice and warm on very cold days. I like the color options, but went with gray. ... show more
