For many years I've used cartridge razors. I was never satisfied so I tried electric. I was never satisfied. So I tried the newest cartridges with 3 and 5 blades. They clog and are expensive. So I took the leap and bought this one on the bet I could return it if I wanted. This is it. It feels good, it shaves close with a decent lather, to cut or nick yourself you'll have to be really trying. I was suckered into believing that shaving my head with a DE razor would be injury free. My style and method of shaving my head is not conducive to the use of the DE razor. My experience however does not diminish the quality craftsmanship and weight of the razor body. these and a few "feather" razors and you'll have a better, cheaper shave than all of the OMGERDXTREME-TYPE-R-SS-VIBRATING-HEATED whatever razor heads that cost so much that they have to keep them locked up at grocery stores.

The Merkur 38c is my third safety razor. The prior two razors were decent, but were prone to nicks and cuts for me, despite using milder blades. After a fair amount of research, it seems like the Merkur 34c/38c seemed to be the most highly recommended for individuals a little newer to using safety razors as well as for folks with sensitive skin and more coarse facial hair. After having used the Merkur 38c for a little over a month now, I can say the recommendations were totally warranted. The Merkur is a very smooth and efficient razor. Since using it, I have not had one nick or cut and have not experienced any skin irritation. I was even able to upgrade to slightly sharper blades for a quicker and closer shave, and it was able to handle them with ease. Have several safety razors. This one is a nice weight, easy to use and prefect for beginners to aid in converting to Safety Double edge Style. Forgiving if your angles are not yet perfect and are learning. It has become ne of my favorites, especially with Persona Blades.

I originally purchased the Merkur Mk34c Double Edge Razor with Heavy Duty Short Handle. I have average size hands and the short handle felt awkwardly too short. I later bought the Merkur Heavy Duty Long Barber Pole Safety Razor and only use that now. The longer handle makes a difference and is much better. ... show more
