  • It's working for me!
Size: Closed Hole Color: Sky Blue
I'm giving this flute 5 stars because it is perfect at being what it is: a cheap (and fun colored!) flute. If you want a pro-grade flute, go pay for a pro-grade flute. But if you want to play flute for under $100, I see no reason not to buy this one. I'm a multi-instrumentalist and music teacher. I'm new to picking up flute. I've had this flute for two days, and I can already play my scales on it. Prior to this, I had literally one week of experience with flute over a decade ago in college. I'm reading some comments here like "it's overly difficult to play because of poor construction." I don't have the experience to say whether other better flutes might be easier, but I don't see this flute as being at all non-functional. One person claims to be a flute maker, and laments that some girl isn't playing songs within three weeks. That girl is obviously not getting requisite training and practice. I can play songs on this within a day. There's even a review here that says the instrument is "out of tune with itself" (that reviewer also says that his previous rental flute was out of tune with itself; which tells me he probably just doesn't know how to play and has trouble with any flute you hand him). That, of course, is a problem with online reviews for ANY musical instrument. People who don't know how to play complain that they can't play and blame the instrument, but that doesn't follow. I'm also reading comments here that the flute is falling apart, or that it broke quickly. Again, this is often less a problem with the instrument and more a problem with the shipping or the user. Mine came with no screws loose (and it comes with a screwdriver to tighten them even if it did). Nothing is broken. Nothing is bent, and frankly, I think you'd have to do something to it before it would bend. Every woodwind student is instructed on day one to be careful when putting the flute together so as not to bend the joints and the keys. I'm not saying that this flute is made of the world's highest quality materials or that it is more durable than more expensive flutes. I'm not even saying other reviewers didn't get theirs in some kind of bad condition; what I can say though is that mine is in good shape and looks for now like it will stay that way. When I read "this flute sucks because my 12-year-old broke it" I don't find that review to be helpful. So, to sum it up: if you want a really nice flute, go pay for a really nice flute. I don't doubt it will be better than this one. If, however, you want a cheap flute that will get the job done, buy this one, and then don't blame it for your inability to play or failure to care for it. ... show more

  • As a home hobby player I'm okay with the purchase
Size: Closed Hole Color: Sky Blue
I'm basically a home hobby woodwind player. I own some name brand instruments. I've also bought a number of bargain basement type woodwind instruments on Amazon and other sites. Some have been fair enough and a few were on the unsatisfactory side at least for a new student. I bought this Mendini sky blue flute maybe 5 years ago now on Amazon and I have enjoyed playing it. I should say because I have a number of instruments I haven't played it all that much - maybe nearing the equivalent of one semester of elementary school band, if that. The tone quality is fair enough and it plays fairly well in tune for me. Over time even at my less than advanced level of playing I can notice overall better quality from the name brand instruments, but sometimes it seems pretty close. As playing time has added up on the Mendini I notice more weight/pressure from the fingers is required on the keys below G to get a fairly satisfactory sound. I expect intermediate/advanced players could find this a big minus, and it is not ideal for a student and maybe a deal breaker. I can't recall how soon after purchase I noticed that issue, but I'd guess less time than the equivalent of a full semester of school band. I suppose an adjustment might help but I'm not going to take this flute to the shop. If I decide it's no longer in any kind of practical playing condition, at that point it's basically scrap metal or maybe something to practice repairs on. I'd guess a used name brand might be a better option than a new bargain brand but there's still quite a price difference. Overall I'm okay with the one time purchase, and I'd estimate one of these flutes, if received in the same playable condition as the one I received was, would work for beginning band for at least a semester and maybe more. Upon reviewing my review I think I may have been inconsistent - at any rate good luck and happy music making! ... show more

  • The quality is there at a great price
Size: Closed Hole Color: Nickel
I ordered two of these flutes for my daughters to play in band. They came packaged separately which was okay. The only complaint is that one came with an extra stand and one was missing the stand and the cleaning cloth. Other than that they seem to be quality beginner instruments. They look nice, play good and no one knows they aren’t they expensive ones. ... show more

An excellent flute for a beginner and even one who is almost an intermediate. Glad we bought it for our 10 year old daughter.

  • Great starter or hobby flute!
Size: Closed Hole Color: Nickel
I used to play in band 20 years ago and wanted to take up the hobby again just for fun for myself. My old Gemeinhardt silver open hole flute needed about $300 worth of work to be playable again, so when I saw this on sale for $65, I decided what the hey and bought it to try instead. First things first, it LOOKS great. Believe it or not, this was actually my first brand new instrument. The shiny flawlessness when I took it out of the package was so satisfying! Lol It went together nice and easily. The tone was not as full as my Gemeinhardts and Yamahas used to have, but for a $65 off brand, I wasn't expecting it to. It DOES have a bit more airy tone than I'd like, especially in the lower register, but DEFINITELY not as bad as some of the other reviews made it seem like it was going to be. All in all, at the price point, I'm pretty impressed. Like I said, if you're trying to make a professional career out of it, this is definitely NOT the flute for you. But if you're just starting to learn or just trying to enjoy some nostalgic fun like I am, this one will definitely do the trick without breaking bank! ... show more

  • A truly great value on many levels
Size: Closed Hole Color: Blue
I work in the inner city and many of the schools I service do not have any instruments at all. These flutes give me a great opportunity to have an inventory and get good work from them. Not to mention how cool it looks to a 4th or 5th grader to have a blue flute. Good sound. Quality constructed an affordable price...I couldn't ask for more ... show more
