    • A good value for the cost . . . but . . .
This is the third Mendini instrument I've purchased (I bought and reviewed their tenor sax and clarinet). It has one problem that all their flutes, at least in this line, will have: the edges of the embouchure hole are not sharp. This produces weaker, less focused, tone than you'd get on a better flute. I play a top of the line Gemeinhardt, which when I purchased it was better, at least for me, than several new Haynes and a Powell that I also tried. The tenons are tight and need to be worked and cleaned initially. I would deal with this before giving it to a beginner. This particular flute arrived with a D# key that would not close all the way, unless I "flicked" my finger off the lever, then it closed. Key oil helped, but it still stuck open now and again. When I loosed the screw rod about 0.1" the key freed up. Also with the foot removed, the key was freer to close. I think that lightly sanding the ends of the key's tube with very fine sandpaper (1200-2400 grit) would have helped. I should note, good instrument stores will service new flues before selling them, from student to high-end models. Thirty years ago I had my flute overhauled. I did not think it needed it, but I was moving, and it seemed like a good time to do it. $750 later, it played better than when it was new! This Mendini would benefit too, but no one is going to pay that for an $80 flute. Ideally, beginners should learn on good instruments that do not have problems, but, for obvious reasons, this rarely happens. With its faults and given the cost, the Mendini is a reasonable beginner's flute, but I would recommend having it serviced first. ... show more

The 5 stars goes to Amazon delivery. It was really gratifying that I got free shipping to Colombia with the promise of delivering on January 15th but I received it on January 8th!!!!. Amazon sent my flute through DHL Express at no cost for me. That I appreciate as a customer and definitely will keep buying staff trough Amazon. About the flute, just unboxed it today, played the only three melodies I know, and so far very very good. Easy to play the low range for me, a totally beginner. Will keep practicing. ... show more

I bought this for my daughter who is taking up flute lessons, as she learns at school with their instrument and comes home to show me she is doing Great, the sound is wonderful and the durability has held up to the test of already being taken apart and put back together again, many many times. Her only issue is that this instrument is a little longer than the one she uses in school, but it doesn't bother her that much she actually prefers it as it helps her with the one she uses at school ... show more

I wanted to get back to playing the flute after over 40 years but didn't want to pay a high price. This is the perfect instrument to play around with and reacquaint myself with the basics.
