  • Nice instrument for price
Color: Silver
I started playing saxophone in band in 1973. I had an alto sax and was looking for to buy a tenor sax (which I played both in high school and college). After reading the reviews from previous buyers and mostly positive ratings I decided to give this Mendini by Cecilio a try. The instrument came well packaged and protected. As with other comments about the case it is not a hard case but will do the job that I need it for. As far as the instrument itself, I was pleasantly surprised at how heavy the instrument was. It seems to be a well built instrument. Again as with other comments on the mouthpiece, neck strap, and reeds, they are very low quality, but I had the foresight to have ordered a better mouthpiece, reeds, and neck strap. I ordered a Selmer S-80 C* mouth piece, an Adorence padded Saxophone Neck Strap, and Vandoreen reeds (I like #3). The tone of the instrument was amazing and using the enclosed tuner the instrument played amazingly well in tune after adjusting my mouthpiece. Having played saxophone for nearly 50 years in elementary, high school, community, big band era, and college, for the price this is an amazing instrument. So if you are on an limited budget or just wanting to see if this is an instrument you or a child would want to play it is well worth the money. ... show more

  • Great Price! Great Sound! Toss the reeds!
Color: Silver
I bought this Tenor to complete my Sax family (minus Bari). I love this sax! It's a perfect price for someone that wants to learn Tenor. I bought the same brand and color as my Soprano and Alto. I play on Mendini and really like their products. What I see in the comments is everyone getting mad that this doesnt make them/ their daughter/ their son sound like a professional on day 1. Thats never going to happen. Plus some band directors telling their students that this is a "waste of money". They are only pushing for them to buy a really expensive horn. Sometimes budget says NO. I love these horns. My only complaint, and its really easy to fix, are the reeds. Toss the reeds and get something else. Overall: great product, great price, great sound. Just toss the reeds the second you open the box. ... show more

  • Thought this would be acceptable re-entry
Color: Silver
Thought this would be an acceptable re-entry to playing saxophone. Played during my middleto college years with life getting in the way. Wanted to pick up again and thought the saxophone was decent. Tried the scale and played lower tone pieces. Failed to notice the issue with high B until after the return period lapsed. DO NOT BUY EVER. Whether it's an intro, getting back into, or whatever DO NOT BUY!!!! Tone is meh and acceptable for nostalgia at home, quality is horrible. ... show more

  • Decent...But Not The Sax For Me
Color: Silver
The Good: playable, good intonation, good tone, the stock mouthpiece is playable. The Bad: Feels flimsy, pads don't look or feel like leather, "clacking" noise when depressing low C, corks coming loose, spring on high D# key either came off during shipping, or was incorrectly installed causing key to leak, and scraped a gash into the body. Used with a Lakey 7*3 mouthpiece, Rovner Dark ligature, and Vandoren 2 reed. I've played alto for years on a Lakey 7*3 but didn't know what reed strength I could handle on tenor so kept it safe with a 2. I tried the stock mouthpiece and found it perfectly usable - other reviewers complain it's garbage - it's not. It's decent for beginners with a light reed. It's plastic, nothing special but found I could sound all keyed notes, soft to loud, top to bottom. Good for a beginner (but would suggest to a beginner to upgrade to a Yamaha 4C or 5C after their first year, and Selmer C* if they're serious when getting into high school) All the notes sounded...seems decent for playability. I was surprised to find the intonation was good around the instrument. The tone is fine - with a Lakey, it's bold and loud. The real disappointment is in the build quality - corks were shifting off their mounts, felts were mashed in places - felts are not just bumpers to protect keys, they also help with intonation. The low B and Bb valves...the felt to regulate height were white on the inside of the guard...but red where you see them from the outside...why? Seems like some showy, "see...we make our saxes like the other guys" with show felt in the adjustment part of the guard. The longer rods for the palm keys (right hand) felt flimsy...a bad bump could damage them fairly easily. The octave thumb key seemed awkward in its placement, to me. Perhaps that's how some of the bigger companies make them? It would be comfortable if you played this sax sitting, draped to your right side. But standing and trying to center it...awkward. Overall, it's a good beginner sax...but if you need to be sure all the bits stay in place...I didn't feel confident I could count on it. Thank you Amazon for a flexible return policy. ... show more

  • Great as a second horn for touring professionals
Color: Silver
Honestly, amazed that it even plays for the money - but it is actually a decent little horn! Doesn't play nearly as effortlessly or with as good intonation as my Yamaha YTS-62, but it costs like 10% of the price. I use this for international/domestic touring and for rowdy shows where my instruments might be at risk - my "beater" horn. I would never "check" my nice horns, but I let this one fly cargo on a recent european tour with my band. I have the soprano too, which again, is a great horn to accompany my very nice professional soprano, and significantly reduces my liability on the road or in dark, sweaty and drunken bar shows ... show more
