Got this for our backyard to aerate the soil for the natural grass area when we change season grass. Considering this for the price factor and this is very good for garden needs. Overall functional & would highly recommend it for its price.     • Nifty idea, but can be sweat breaking in hard soil.
I liked the design and idea behind this tool. I have used it to aerate my soil and it seems to work for sure. I was surprised to see that it did exceed my expectation when it comes to how easy it would be to use. But one thing I learned is that you do have to push it hard depending on how hard the soil is. I sprayed some water on the soil and that it did make it little easier. Now, if I have a big yard, I am not sure this is that practical in terms of getting job done in a timely manner. It’s not just an aeration tool though. It cores the ground and removes plugs of soil, just like a professional landscaper’s machine does. This is far superior to aeration tools that just have spikes that you drive into the ground. The spike method does make holes, but it also further compresses the soil around the holes as the spikes are forced into the ground. By removing plugs of soil (as this tool does), not only do you allow air, water, and nutrients to penetrate deep into the soil, but you also eliminate the compression of the soil. Soil compression is what prevents air, water, and nutrients from reaching the roots of your lawn in the first place. As long as your lawn is moist, either from a recent rain or by watering, this tool allows you to easily aerate your lawn. If you’re having trouble driving the tool into your lawn, the soil is to dry - water it thoroughly. This tool also gathers all of the plugs of soil that you remove during the aeration process. I like to dump the soil plugs onto the surface of the lawn and spread them out so that they can be broken down - more nutrients for your lawn. Of course, the only downside to this tool is that it uses a manual process for aeration. I only used it on certain areas of my lawn that have become compacted over the years. I wouldn’t want to use this tool on my entire lawn – although I certainly could. It would just take a while. I am 6‘3“ tall, and I found the tool to be comfortable to use. First out of the box it was quick and easy to assemble, when using it seems to work great on soils that are a good mix. Issue came when i was using in a heavy clay soil i was hopping on this thing and was having trouble going in and out. Ended up slightly bending the handle but nothing extreme. still planning to use this in spring by my flower beds. ... show more

    • I've been using this almost daily
I'm a landscaper, and we use big heavy lawnmowers on steep and wet grass. If we skid on nice grass, we immediately replant it. Seed can wash or blow off and won't stick to the spots we need it too. That's where this great, lightweight aerator comes in. It can be difficult to break up the soil for the seed to stick and bury into it. I hold this by the handles and repeatedly punch it into the soil like a jackhammer. I aim to get holes about an inch or two apart. I then spread seed over it, being sure to get it into the holes. I can then walk away with no further action and see new grass growing beautifully in 2 weeks. Oh, and it works great when used as intended too! ... show more
