  • Thoughtful intellectual heartwarming book!
This graphic novel is a great read, in mostly gray scale with colors throughout, and some full color, it is drawn simply but powerful. The message and story is what keeps you hooked! The ending is a heartwarming realization of loss, acceptance, renewal, moving on , redemption! Worth a read!

  • Perfect
A harrowing, heartfelt work of art. It delicately finds its way into your heart and softly cracks you open. A haunting, vulnerable, and unflinching journey through grief and healing. Also there's a talking dog. What more do you want? This book is perfection.

  • Well done graphic novel
Series Info/Source: This is a stand alone book. I got this in hardback as a Christmas gift. Thoughts: This graphic novel is about a building inspector who has lost his family (his pre-teen daughter to disease and his wife to the divorce that followed). He lives a repetitive day to-day existence and has given up on anything else when he gets a strange call in the middle of the night from his dead daughter. She is trapped in a maze (she loved doing mazes growing up) and needs him to find her. This was a decent graphic novel. I enjoyed the mystery and symbolism here. I sometimes found the illustration a bit had to follow. The illustration is done in a very sketchy and unfinished style, which isn't my favorite. I did really enjoy how aspects of the maze were woven in and out of the panels. This is fairly ambiguous and the quest to the center of the maze seems to be somewhere between magical realism, delusion, and an internal mental journey. This is a well done artistically and a very moving read as the inspector tries to navigate his own grief and confront what he's done with this life since his daughter's passing. There is a bit of a fantasy element as the whole city becomes a maze for him to solve. My Summary (4/5): Overall this was a well done graphic novel. I enjoyed the story and some of the artistic elements. I did find the story a bit ambiguous at times and thought the illustration had a sketchy and unfinished feeling to it. I am glad I read this and will keep my eye open for other graphic novels by Lemire. ... show more

  • Sequential Tropes
A father is dealing with the loss of his daughter. His life falls apart. She loved mazes. He's a shell of a person. One night he gets a call that she's alive, so he goes to find her. He dips into dreamlike states to do so, following a literal thread through a maze of a city, while learning to put his past behind him and move on. Congrats, you have now read Mazebook. Sadly, the writing here is purely functional. In the notes Lemire says he "let himself find the story as we go", and boy does the writing reflect that. Stilted dialogue. One note characters. An ending that demeans the reality of grief. One disappointing aspect is how even the potential saving grace of the dream-like imagery is so tired. An epic adventure into the psyche could be visually astounding and truly strange, but this is asleep at the wheel. At one point the main character walks through a boring alley and finds a talking dog. What is meant to feel magical and revelatory, but only comes across as lame. And that's the real issue: even the mysterious dream-like concepts are so overused here, all have been seen hundreds of times, in better stories. The artistic execution here, while at times visually interesting, never fully lands. The vague imagery and use of the red thread pen/string idea is strong, but there are panels where I honestly laughed out loud. Some took over 10 seconds to figure out what was drawn (unintentionally!) and others are simply bad drawings. In the right hands, this template story could have worked. There are ideas here which, with actual planning, could have come together to be more than a cliche. Instead, this feels like it is a draft storyboard for a future hopeful movie adaptation, aiming that the screenwriters fix the gaps in narrative in their draft. ... show more

  • Must Read (have tissue handy)
For anyone who’s ever lost someone close, fair warning… Jeff Lemire digs deep into loss, mourning, & finding your way back. The trip isn’t easy, but so very worth it.
