After just finishing a 300 square foot vinyl plank flooring installation, I ordered this floor cutter. I have been using a great DeWALT DWS780 miter saw which is exceptional, and large. So, it is going to be great to also have the Mantistol 331 Tomahawk Multi-floor cutter. I’m not sure how long the blade will last, and that will obviously be determined by what type of material is being cut with it. Obviously, having a sharp blade in any case is important to have, and I can see that with a dull blade the cutting would be very difficult, requiring a lot of pressure on the handle. Sharp cutting blades is key to clean easy cuts. For comparison, I have a close up picture of the two different cuts (Mantistol 331 Tomahawkon the left side of pic; DeWALT miter saw w/ 80 tooth blade on the right) It looks like replacement blades range in price from around $30-$50 from an initial search on Amazon. The tool did also come with a sharpening stone to aid in sharpening the blade when it gets dull. I think I’ll get an extra blade to have available when the installed blade gets dull, then just swap it out for the other blade, and the dull one can be pulled out and sharpened. I did quite a few practice cuts with some scrap pieces of the flooring that I just installed. The product is sold through Costco; Mohawk Home Flooring, hybrid resilient flooring, in the “Walker Creek Oak” finish. In a couple of months I’ll be installing these same flooring planks in the adjoining room. So, along with the DeWALT miter saw, I’ll have this new Mantistiol 331. Based on the initial sample cuts that I’ve done, I suspect that this cutter will handle around 90% of the cuts required, and the other 10% will be with the miter and circular saws. This type of flooring cutter is one of those “game changer” tools in the flooring installation field. I’m glad to have this tool available for when the flooring installations are taking place. Now, along with all the other flooring installation tools, and this specialty cutter, I feel ready to handle any laminate plank flooring project that might come up. For anyone looking to do their first flooring project, or are a seasoned pro, this is one of those tools that will just make your flooring installation go so much more smoothly, having it available to make the majority of the cuts easily and without all the dust that is created by using a saw.

Who doesn't remember the antiquated, large-handled paper cutters of old? In a sense, that's exactly what this product is, except on steroids. Previously, I would mark the length of each cut and move to my chop saw to make a clean cut. While that's not a bad thing, the amount of time and effort spent moving between the installation and the equipment was painful. With this product, I can set the cutter off to the side and make my cuts right where I'm working without the extra movement. That's a huge upside. With every up there's also a down. This laminate cutter is optimized for straight cuts. Some cuts may be more intricate, which means that you still need to use either a jig or bandsaw. However, I would agree that the bulk of the cuts you face can be accomplished with this device. I've read where the maximum thickness for this tool is either 9/16 or 11/16 inches... either way, that encompasses most of the flooring thicknesses. I do question the life of the cutting blade, but it's designed to be replaceable! Blade cost is about $30 at this writing. I can't yet speak to the life of the blade, but I think it would be worthwhile to keep an extra on hand in case you need it. Overall, this is definitely a quality product and one I wish I had a few years ago. For anyone considering the installation of a laminate floor, or even for folks that do this on the side, this is very much a worthwhile investment. I would order it again without reservation.
