Pieces of black hose rubber get brittle. They may be too thin or too thick. This has greater compressibility and I think that since it is all silicone rubber it will last years longer. A couple hints. Apply it in 12" strips. If you try longer lengths it is likely you will get part of the piece to twist over and once it touches itself it will stick. Another is to apply something sticky to the surface before starting. This stuff sticks to itself tenaciously but initally it does not stick the the item you want to wrap. So the external tire on my van does not rattle and my bike's carrier is solid.

Used a strip on the side of a computer mouse that was wearing down. The mouse was expensive and still works great but the rubber was sticky/degrading. A single strip of this along the side was easily cut to shape/fit and stuck to the mouse without adhesive, wasn't instant but it did eventually stay in place with pressure and time. Only took about 2 inches from the roll. Months later the side of the mouse hasn't additionally degraded. Also added a small amount of traction to the side-grip without adding a sticky/tacky feeling.

This self fusing tape is so useful! There are several brands of it on the market. This one is distinctive in some ways. * It fuses REALLY FAST. If you leave it together under tension for just a short time, you'll be using a knife or scissors to get it off. * It is kind of sticky and gummy. This is good for many uses, but it would collect hair and dirt on the outside in some applications. * It is quite strong. I haven't tried sealing a pipe under pressure and I suspect it would just balloon out because it is just really stretchy. If I were to try sealing something under pressure, I'd try multiple wraps around only advancing a sixteenth of an inch - a millimeter or so - on each wind, and keep it not super tight while doing it. This way it will build up a ton of extra strength with each overlapping wind, while the water squirts out of the end, until the pressure of the tape exceeds the water pressure. Then I'd go over it a few more times with an extra tight binding round. It sticks to itself so well that, in a tight space, that would be quite challenging to say the least. But you don't have to peel the backing off all at once you can peel as you go. Other brands are thicker, less sticky - and that has different use cases that are equally as nice. Overall, great stuff!

Clean Saran Wrap sticks to itself because it’s just so freakin smooth. This stuff too. Just know that going in. Just like Seran wrap it gets a lot less “sticky” each time you pull it apart as the surface gets less and less smooth, and it HAS to overlap because it doesn’t stick to much besides itself.

I purchased this tape to wrap a handle on a Schwinn Airdynne bike that only had foam rubber on the handles. The tape went on easily and grips well to the tape beneath it as long as you pull it a little tight as you wrap to cause it to stretch just a bit. Once wrapped this gave a great non-slip grip to the handles without feeling tacky or sticky in any way. The best part is this tape is so multi-functional. I've also used it to secure a phone mount in my car to stop it from wiggling and to wrap leaking low-pressure pipes to seal them. Great stuff to have around the house!

This is a horrible product. Maybe and that's a big maybe it might work for a garden hose but if you need something to temporarily repair a plumbing issue, DO NOT buy this product. I was trying to seal a dripping section of copper tubing and it did not help at all. Still dripping all over the floor.
