Killian Maddox (Jonathan Majors) is consumed by his dream of becoming a world- famous bodybuilder and one day gracing the cover of fitness magazines. • What makes a monster? The distance between what we fear and what’s actually there.
At one point in Magazine Dreams, Killian Maddox quietly types into Google: “how to make people like you.” It lands like a gut punch—quieter than the film’s outbursts, but far more devastating. Killian isn’t just a bodybuilder chasing a spotlight; he’s a man starving for connection, convinced that carving his body into perfection might finally make him visible. Jonathan Majors gives a performance that’s both physically grueling and emotionally unflinching. He plays Killian as a towering presence with a childlike ache beneath the surface—a portrayal so raw and committed, it feels suspenseful to watch what Maddox will do next. Director Elijah Bynum doesn’t flinch either. He drags us through a fractured, isolating world where sound, silence, and score collide. The film unsettles not because of what it shows, but because of what it makes you feel: a sense of desperation and loneliness that's always 2 steps behind acceptance. Magazine Dreams isn’t really about bodybuilding. It’s about what happens when being seen is mistaken for being loved. And now, watching it through the lens of real life, the parallels feel impossible to ignore. Majors, accused of felony strangulation that was later dismissed and described as a misunderstanding by NYPD, was swiftly condemned in the public eye—and arguably still is. It echoes Magazine Dreams’ core idea: once people can imagine someone as violent, that image sticks—whether it’s fair or not—and the repulsion feeds off itself. Ironically, Maddox’s violence in the film is minimal—a smashed storefront, a broken window—and doesn't involve harm to a living being. Yet, characters—and perhaps viewers—walk away convinced Maddox has harmed people. Not because of what he actually does, but because of the capability they project onto him. Just like in real life. ... show more

  • And the Oscar goes to…
Jonathan Majors’ riveting portrayal of body builder Killion Maddox was spellbinding. His deft embodiment of utter dedication laced with desperation and loneliness will not be equaled on screen this year. Combined with the firm vision and direction of Elijah Bynum, this raw and powerfully intense story drives us to the edge of destruction, then hits the brakes and sends us careening down another dark stunning road at dangerously high speeds. This movie is utterly mesmerizing and well worth your time. ... show more

  • I wasn't expecting a buff Taxi Driver
I am very impressed. I avoid most trailers and ads for movies because they spoil the movie. My goodness i loved this movie i don't even want to spoil it. I will say they TRY to make the cops and painters nephew bad guys. But I can't say I disagree with any of them. Will watch again!

  • Wow!!
The acting and overall concept of this movie deserve much more recognition. While I understand the film focuses on bodybuilding, as a college professor and a mother of a child on the spectrum, my heart goes out to Killian. I wish I could be there for him and wish that he had a better support system. Overall, Jonathan Majors delivers a remarkable performance in this movie, and I hope he receives the recognition he deserves for his acting. ... show more

  • Superior Majors performance, Dark subject matter
Jonathan's performance in this role is immersive. You can really see that he put his heart and soul into this character. But the movie overall was a difficult watch. It's hard to watch a character that just can't get out of his own way. And the subject matter was just so dark. I almost didn't have the courage to watch how it ended. But I would say for Jonathan's performance alone. It's worth a watch. ... show more
