What a marvelous Science toy! This is an interesting model toy, this stirling engine model uses the temperature difference between the top and bottom plates to drive. Put it on the cup which full with hot waters, give the flywheel a gently push, and get the flywheel going, and then it works like charm. Quick Start and Precautions: 1️⃣Place the engine on a flat table and add hot water with more than 4/5 capacity of the cup into the flat cup with a mouth less than 88mm. 2️⃣The engine will not start automatically. Under the premise of enough safety, place the engine on the mouth of the cup and heat it for about 20 seconds, then move the flywheel clockwise by hand until the engine runs. 3️⃣ It is forbidden to add oil into the engine cylinder, piston, bearing, connecting rod and other moving parts! 4️⃣The engine can run with only a very small temperature difference between the top and bottom, anything hotter than boiling water will damage the device. Do not place it on any objects with high temperature (stove, wood burning fireplace, candle, etc.), otherwise many parts of the engine will be melted. The highest temperature to run the engine should not exceed 100°C(212°F). 5️⃣The continuous and constant temperature of the heat source on the constant temperature plate should not exceed 60°C(140°F). This a very lightweight, but well made sterling engine demonstrator. I say lightweight only because when I first picked up the box, I was afraid it was empty. It was not. The engine is mostly metal and runs well and runs long on very little heat. I placed it on top of an insulated mug with a cup (that's all) of hot water (not boiling as suggested, but still very hot) and set it beside me while I worked. It ran for at least 2 hours at which point it became a bit annoying. :-) It makes very little sound but serves as an excellent demonstrator. If used in a class room, you will have no trouble having it run for a typical class session. I imagine you could place it on a lot of hot surfaces (laser printers, computers, you get the idea) and have it run as well. I just followed the instructions and used hot water. You need to give it a little spin to get started, but it takes off from there. It is particularly interesting when you spin it a little and it quickly picks up speed. I had read the reviews before purchasing and decided to give it a try anyways in the hopes that it wouldn't be difficult to get running. I first heated some water and placed it on top of the coffee cup and waited 30 seconds then spun the wheel. It didn't spin up with a lot of authority so I assumed the reviews were right and it was gonna need a lot of heat to run at all. Once the water cooled some I removed it and placed it in my palm and to my surprise it kept running. I have since re-tested going from cold to my palm and it runs everytime off of only my body heat! Perhaps I got a good one or I just run hotter than some. ... show more

The media could not be loaded. This mini sterling engine is AWESOME! It works perfectly. Its beautifully made, great materials, solid manufacturing. It looks delicate, yet its pretty darn robust. We had a blast with my family using this on our morning coffee. Put a hot beverage in a cup, put the sterling engine on top, and watch it GO! It works great (may need a tiny tap to start the spin from cold start). Once it gets started, it spins really fast. Its entertaining to watch. And it goes for a long time with just a little bit of hot liquid underneath. It works so well, we even tried to "reverse" it by keeping the bottom at room temperature, and putting a cold source (ice cubes) on top, and it worked in "reverse" as well. The properties of the sterling engine to create motion from differential heat sources is well demonstrated with this little engine. The detail craftmanship is solid, its ornate looking. My uncle is a physics teacher and he will be using it this fall in his physics classes. Additionally, the packaging it came in is very good, so there was no damage, and it was packed really well. All-around, I was VERY impressed with this item. Its a hit. Kids and adults alike both are enjoying it. Well done, would definitely buy again! ... show more

I ordered this to sit on my work desk. I couldn't wait to get this little engine out of the box and give it a try. I tried it first with a cup of hot tap water. I waited for about 5 minutes, but the engine would not keep turning once I gave it a push. So I put some water in my pour over kettle and heated it up to 211F. I filled a coffee cup with the nearly boiling water and placed the engine on top. I gave it just the slightest push and.... it turned on its own, getting faster and faster and producing a satisfying click with each piston stroke. I'll admit that this little engine is pretty expensive when you consider that it's just a toy that sits there and turns. It is a bit of a splurge. Nevertheless, it's uber cool, and I'm happy I ordered it. ... show more
