Description

Lithium-Ion Battery Chemistries: A Primer offers a simple description on how different lithium-ion battery chemistries work, along with their differences. It includes a refresher on the basics of electrochemistry and thermodynamics, and an understanding of the fundamental processes that occur in the lithium- ion battery. Furthermore, it reviews each of the major chemistries that are in use today, including Lithium-Iron Phosphate (LFP), Lithium-Cobalt Oxide (LCO), Lithium Manganese Oxide (LMO), Lithium-Nickel Manganese Cobalt (NMC), Lithium- Nickel Cobalt Aluminium (NCA), and Lithium-Titanate Oxide (LTO) and outlines the different types of anodes, including carbon (graphite, hard carbon, soft carbon, graphene), silicon, and tin.In addition, the book offers performance comparisons of different chemistries to help users select the right battery for the right application and provides explanations on why different chemistries have different performances and capabilities. Finally, it offers a brief look at emerging and beyond-lithium chemistries, including lithium-air, zinc-air, aluminum air, solid-state, lithium-sulfur, lithium-glass, and lithium-metal.Presents a refresher on the basics of electrochemistry and thermodynamics, along with simple graphics and images of complex conceptsProvides a clear-and-concise description of lithium-ion chemistries and how they operate Covers the fundamental processes that occur in lithium- ion batteriesIncludes a detailed review of current and future chemistries Read more

  • Excellent, easy reading
Warner's book is excellent and indeed is a Primer introducing the reader to lithium batteries. It is even a better reading if one already read up on batteries and fuel cells. It is focused on Li-ion, so no fillers. Author's writing style is ease light and down to earth.

  • Basic facts wrong and sloppy inconsistency and errors
I picked this book up as a good refresher and maybe some insight into the industry. I am coming from a background of Electrical Engineering and Systems Engineering so I am incredibly disappointed in basic facts being wrong. I'm on page 52 and I am about to give up. As examples on page 28, Warner states that isotopes are atoms with the same number of protons but different numbers of electrons (it should be different number of neutrons but same protons). This is a basic fact and if wrong how can I trust that the rest of the information I am not familiar with is correct? On page 44, the definition of a cation and anion are confused. There's several other errors and Warner goes into incorrect explanations often. I'm disappointed in the book. I don't know if Warner had the sloppiest editor or if he just doesn't understand what he thinks that he does. ... show more
