  • Anyone Who Lives Near Forested Lands Should Own This Book
I was surprised how hard it was to find a book like this. We live in a high fire danger zone of California's Sierra Nevada, with lots of high-quality government websites and fire-advice booklets - but nothing with the meticulous documentation and comprehensive scale of this book. Unreserved praise for this 2014 book. Reading it, one piece that struck me was the handful of paragraphs describing the rapid escalation of fire danger and the destructive sweep of fires - this in 2014. It vividly brought home that yes, this is a long-term, nearly exponential trend. This year (2021) with a month or two still left in fire season, two million acres of California have burned; a month and a half ago EIGHTY large wildfires were raging in British Columbia; recurrent drought in the Eastern North American forests are seeing regional-scale wildfire begin to happen where it never has before; and this year's tundra fires in Siberia were larger than all other wildfires in the world put together. Buy this book. Read it. And over the next 1 to 2 years, adapt your home, land, and community to the new realities of fire. ... show more

  • Terrific guide for mountain homeowners
As a mountain homeowner who lost a previous cabin in the High Park Fire, I have combed the Internet, poured through US Forest Service publications, collected lots of state extension service materials and consulted multiple times with our county forester to learn how to manage the forest on our new property and reduce our risk of wildfire. This wonderfully crafted book took me well beyond what I had learned from these other sources. It is a fast read, filled with useful information, and offers terrific advise on the tools you'll need and the steps you'll want to take to mitigate your risk. ... show more
