Worked very well for a Briggs & Stratton L-head small engine ( 6 HP Toro lawnmower), ~2.25 inch piston. I tried a cheaper alternative for 2-5 inch pistons (also via Amazon) and it failed completely - clutch stripped after first tightening, didn't keep oil ring clamped and broke oil ring as my son and I tapped into cylinder. Bought new rings, this Lisle ring compressor, and worked well the first time. Had to loosen the screws slightly to allow clutch to take up slack, but it held tension well and clamped tightly at the rings - worked like a charm! ... show more

It is a simple tool to use, well made, and necessary for small engine repair. I purchased a CHEAP Chinese air compressor. Every dealer selling PCP compressors will tell you not to waste your money on one. If you would like to learn about engine repair. and save yourself a bundle. This tool is a must. The Chinese compressors sell pistons, connecting rods rings, sleeves, heads, and more. But you will probably need this tool if you want to go that rout. ... show more

    • Works, but is difficult to operate.
This piston ring compressor works, but is very clunky to operate. Tightening the band isn't smooth, and you really need to crank down on it to tighten it a little bit... which makes it difficult to keep everything lined up while tightening it. That being said, it did work, and with spurradic use, it was a good purchase. If I had to install pistons everyday though, I would invest in a better spring compressor. ... show more

Super happy this is made in the USA, but no so much on it's performance - more of a wrestling match than a precision aid - the adjustment is vert tight and and there are sharp edges to contend with as you try to use it. The spring steel band is oval to start and difficult to close down on the rings in a controlled manner. It might just work on your lawn mower, but I'll not risk it damaging the rings on my engine build .... ... show more
