  • Why did LG Upgrade Firmware to block Blu Ray DVD Ripping by legit owners of discs?
When I first bought this and added it to my computer everything worked fine. Using legitimately purchased software I was able to rip Blu Ray discs I had already purchased to my SSD for archiving and viewing. Which has been decided as legal by the Supreme Court! LG updated their Firmware to 1.03, not sure what number ASUS used but they did the same (I suspect neither companies are the original mfgs of these drives) which at least in the case of ASUS, bricked their Blu Ray drives to not even work. That's what happened in my case, one day for no reason it just suddenly stopped working altogether. I then purchased an LG BH16NS40 to replace it and it worked fine for several weeks until again, it suddenly would no longer rip Blu Rays but would read them. This borders on "bait and switch" IMO since both companies removed the functionality from these drives that was paid for by customers and by law is LEGALLY allowed! Everything I did was completely legit and legal yet ASUS and LG both decided to do the "dirty work" for the RIAA, MPAA. Using the LG Blue Ray I CAN still backup my regular DVD collection, just not Blu Ray discs. I fully support artists and musicians getting paid for their work! I do not however like being punished by having features removed from products that I've paid for! Not much as individuals we can do about it but I have (FWIW) chosen to NOT support ASUS or LG any further with my buying power. For 17 years and still going, I've built and sold computers using both ASUS and LG products numbering easily in the several hundreds. Not anymore, I'll give the business to ASRock, Gigabyte and other competitors. It took quite a few hours to find out why I couldn't even use the drive(s) I have already paid for properly. There are only a few mentions of it on the Internet (mostly from Poland), this is where we're at now? So now ASUS and LG are doing the job for the Recording Industry? I suspect there's more than a few others who have ran into this as well but just assumed that their drive(s) simply died for no reason? And likely replaced them the same way I did. There is a potential/alleged work around that involves a lot of computer firmware manipulating for the drive(s) that may or may not work and may brick your partially functioning drive if it doesn't accept the changes. The further I read into it the more "iffy" it became if it would even work. LG even went so far as to stop you from rolling back your firmware in order to be able to use the original function so it was purposeful and in no way accidental in the slightest, it was absolutely by design. Since this is no longer a sold or supported drive (other than possibly used) I doubt many people will even see this post but hopefully the word gets out about what exactly IS going on! ... show more
