  • Perfect 'Work From Home' Macbook Pro USB-C Productivity Monitor - 49 inch
Summary: No issues for me at all. Multi-tasking heaven. High-quality screen resolution and easy to setup. Stop your search and just buy this! This review is for the 49 inch LG 49WL95C-W. You can read the tech specs everywhere but this a review for the person working from home and wanting to know in plain English if this is a great monitor. Answer: YES!! Easy setup: This monitor is absolutely perfect for Macbook Pro users like myself. The monitor came with a USB-C cable (among many other cable types). Out of the box, connecting the stand and mounting the monitor to it was a breeze. Then it's literally two cables: one to power the monitor into the wall and then the USB-C to connect the laptop. (The monitor will charge your laptop). After reading that some users were having issues with the screen flickering/blacking out while I was researching, I was sure to immediately go to the LG support page to download any firmware updates. I've had this for a week now and I haven't had a single issue. Don't let any negative reviews deter you. The final step was to adjust the display resolution under system preferences on my laptop, then everything looked even better than I was expecting. The monitor itself gives you some settings for further customization, but I spent a minimal amount of time messing with that. It's just a small push knob on the back panel towards the right side.. very easy to use. The whole process from opening the box to being completely up and running was just a few minutes and I found it to be easy and I think most others would too. High-Quality Screen Resolution: To me, the 5120 x 1440 screen resolution gives a very similar picture quality to my laptop's display. It's obviously unrealistic to have it look better than the laptop considering there's MUCH more real estate to work with, but I'm VERY pleased with the quality. I can watch 4k videos on YouTube and I think it looks fantastic. Text is also crisp. The resolution just everything 99% of people will ever need for work, browsing the web, or any common productivity tasks. To organize your windows, LG's OnScreen Control (that you can download from LG's website) allows you to split the screen in a variety of ways. I like using the 3 screen split, but you can split it up to 8 screens. I know people are talking about 3rd party software for more screen splitting customization, but I haven't tried that. I like splitting the screen vertically into thirds. This way, each of the 3 screens is a little bigger than the size of my 15 inch laptop screen, and I have 3 windows side by side, all looking incredible. It's easy to switch between layouts and move windows around. It just solves so many annoying problems that I used to have with tiling windows behind each other. No more! Sound: The monitor itself has speakers as well as a port for your headphones. Audiophiles probably wouldn't be salivating over it, but I think it sounds decent. I would still give the edge to my 2018 Macbook Pro speakers, but I just use headphones most of the time anyway. Just buy separate speakers if top-quality sound is super important to you. Conclusion: I bought this monitor because I'm working from home as a software developer and I need to multi-task with several programs visible at the same time. This is absolutely everything I was hoping for and more! The screen is large and wide, but not obnoxiously so. The quality is excellent and I have no issues. Zero dead pixels, no flicker or black out issues. Working from home is now so much more convenient and enjoyable, that's really the bottom line. I can imagine this would be the perfect monitor for stock traders as well who are looking to analyze several charts simultaneously. I'm not a gamer, so I can't speak to that at all regarding refresh rates, but for work or regular internet use, 60Hz is definitely all you need. If you can afford it, go for it!! This monitor is quality and I couldn't be happier with my purchase. My girlfriend jokes that I won't spend time with her in the evenings as much anymore because of this thing. Haha, she's not entirely wrong. ... show more

  • Fantastic Productivity Monitor
I am not a gamer so I can't comment on that, but I am delighted with this as a productive monitor. I do a lot of research with a lot of windows open and this gives me the real estate I have always wanted. It was plug-and-play for me out of the box. Here are the details of my setup (pictured above) in case it helps people sort out compatibility concerns. I have a base model 14" M1 MacBook Pro. I connect it with a single Thunderbolt 3 cable to a CalDigit Thunderbolt 3 Dock. The dock is then connected to the monitor via a very good 8K Display Port Cable. This gave me full-resolution video, audio, and data to all of the monitor ports. It all worked from the first moment I turned it on. I have been using it for several days now and everything is perfect. The shallow curve is great for me but would probably make a gamer crazy. It wasn't cheap, but I make my living with this thing. Could not be happier. ... show more

  • Excellent wide screen monitor
I've been using this monitor with my MacBook Pro for going on 2 years now. It was expensive but its a stunning and versatile monitor. I have a few gripes- no software control of brightness or volume for example. Sometimes having to turn your head side to side to take in a whole screen of information is a bit tiring. I have to pay attention in online meetings not to broadcast a screen too big/long/tall for the viewers. Those are minor things though- its an excellent monitor. I've never used it for gaming so I can't comment on that. The review before mine stated that the display randomly shuts off & on with a MacBook Pro. I've never had this happen, and I've used it with 3 different MBPs for almost 2 years. If I use this as an extended desktop (which I usually do), in the display settings "Default for display" it does use a low resolution- that is very easy to read but doesn't take advantage of all the display has to offer. If you set it to Scaled, you can select the native resolution of 5120x1440. For me this ends up being a bit too hard to read, so I set it to 3840x1080 and this is just about right. I like that the USB-C output has enough power to run & charge my MBP- no need for my charger. I often use it as the main display with my MBP closed, using a wireless keyboard and trackpad. Very versatile and high quality. ... show more

  • Almost perfect - 2020 Mac Book Pro
I'm using this monitor with a 13" 2020 MBP connected via USB-C. I had 2 24" monitors hooked up before that this monitor replaced. The amount of free space from the change is dramatic and my desk looks a lot cleaner and more organized. Because you can carve the windows up how you want, this gives you much more useable space than traditional monitors. I don't do video editing or anything like that, I bought this as my everyday work monitor because I am an obsessive multi-tasker and need to be looking at multiple things all the time. Pros: - The design of everything looks very nice - The picture is great (I'm not gaming or anything like that) - The speakers are surprisingly good and provide a quality surround sound - Being able to connect a MBP to this monitor via a single USB-C and power the laptop is great Cons: - My biggest con is I wish it was more curved. It's a very gentle curve that is fine if the monitor is pushed back but more of a curve would certainly be better - The software to arrange windows and apps is not that good. It works ok but has quirks that are annoying. Spend $10 and buy Moom and use that instead. - When outputting sound from my MBP to the monitor via the USB-C connection, my OS volume controls don't work. This is a Mac OS limitation and can be overcome by using an app called Sound Control. - Not a con but I think you need a big desk for this because it's not curved much. My desk is 35.5" deep and I have the monitor pushed back as far as it goes which is perfect. ... show more

  • Super functional design | Say goodbye to bezels...
This review is for the LG 49” display: (...not sure why LG 38” display reviews are mixed in here)... The ultrawide view along with a beautiful, crisp, clear resolution (5120x1440), was the primary reason for my purchase. It arrived in solid packaging and set-up was quick and simple. Granted it's not a true 5k, but that's not the target market. If this display had the same resolution as the 34" LG 34WK95U-W (5120 x 2160), that would be a dream come true! [I actually considered purchasing that (34") display last year, but it was not as wide as this one, so in the meantime (while I waited for the 49" display to launch) I went with the 38" LG38WK95C-W ultra-wide (3840x1600)]. I am a web developer and I appreciate the extra real estate this display provides for multitasking. I'm connected with ONE USB-C (TB3) cable (which in itself is awesome!) via CalDigit TS3+, and a 2018 15" MacBook Pro (w 32 GB RAM / Radeon Pro 560x running the latest version of Mojave, 10.14.4 as of today). That said, I think the minor flickering issue I'm experiencing below is an (Apple) OSX related "scaling" issue, not LG (I'm also running the latest LG firmware). Minor concerns: -This display (LG 49WL95C-W) will periodically "blackout," and go dark (which only lasts for about a second, until I press a key or move my mouse). As others have stated, this happens several times throughout the day for no apparent reason. -My only other concern is that I still occasionally have to go through the configuration process (System Preferences / Displays / then hold down the "option" key when selecting "Scaled," and then choosing "5120x1440 (low resolution)" from the drop-down menu, for it to scale properly. It seems to scale (to its native resolution) correctly most of the time (but this really should not be an issue). If I disconnect and reconnect my MacBook Pro (via the one USB-C cable), it will usually display the native resolution and other times it won't. This same issue happens when I reboot and I'm connected to this display. After testing it, this still happens with other (high quality) USB-C cables, so I don't think it's the cable. My LG 38" ultra-wide never did this when connected to my MB Pro. Not sure if anyone else is experiencing this. I see several Mac owners are. If I'm missing something, please let me know how to resolve this. I also posted a review on the LG site. I'm also not having any "wobble" issues as I see others are experiencing. I'm using a Sequel Lift (6052) Lift Desk and it's very solid and sturdy. I would normally put this on a VESA compliant mount, but this beast is too big (~27 lbs w/o the stand). If you are considering a display that will allow you to create more content or view more information on one screen, I recommend this display. ~Please forgive the novel length rant~ I'm hoping this will help other Mac users to receive a quick Mojave update. I already submitted a request to Apple. Note: This thing is pretty huge when you actually see it in person (the photo's really don't do it justice). TL;DR I'm really glad I ordered it! This is a beautiful, crisp, ultra-wide display (if it was any wider my neck would crack)! (Hopefully, Apple will quickly produce an OSX update to address the minor (handshake) scaling issues, as they fortunately did when the LG 34WK95U-W was first launched). Update 4:30/19: The latest LG OnScreen Control software update seems to have taken care of the random blackouts. ... show more

  • Wish this was more curved...
--== Feb 2025 Update ==-- Four years later, I’m bumping this up to four stars—this monitor has more than proven its worth. Looking back at my previous review… honestly, I’m not sure what I was thinking. I no longer care about the remote, so that complaint feels unfair—I've never needed to change the input, and this thing has been rock solid. It has significantly boosted my productivity, and the screen real estate is more than enough. As for the curvature, I take back my original critique. I must have been comparing it too closely to my previous setup, but in practice, it’s plenty sufficient. No issues, no regrets. I still think the headphone jack placement could be better, but I’ve since switched to a multi-point Bluetooth device, so it’s a non-issue for me now. The two best features that continue to impress: ✅ 5120 x 1440 over USB-C – Flawless, high-res performance without compromise. ✅ USB-C with Power Delivery – Simplifies my setup and keeps my MacBook charged with a single cable. Still a fantastic monitor after all these years. --== Nov 8, 2021 Update ==-- The USB Port 1 appears to be malfunctioning and has any device plugged in working sporadically or at a low rate of function. I use an Apple Macbook Pro connected and powered via USB-C. On the monitor, I have both a mouse, keyboard, and webcam connected to the USB ports on the monitor. I've had the monitor in this configuration since February 2021 with no issue. I first started noticing the issue with a wireless mouse where the tracking would come in and out. I tested and confirmed that it was not the battery and then tested with a hardwired mouse and had the same issue. I then tested with USB ports 2, 3, and 4 and had no issue. Once I realized the USB port 1 with that device had issues I begin testing that port with other devices, keyboard, webcam, and hard drive each of which had issues that only occur when using USB port 1. At this point, I'm certain that there is an issue with this single port as I've tested multiple devices with multiple port combinations and USB port 1 is universally the issue. --== Original Review ==-- Wish this monitor was more curved but works perfectly with my Mac over USB-C. I spent about 2 weeks with a the AOC AGON Curved Gaming Monitor 49" (AG493UCX) and I do think they got the curvature right with regard to what bring the image to you periphery. In comparison this monitor significantly lacks however that's the only knock I've been able to find this far. Pros - USB-C provides 5120x1440 output flawlessly on my MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2019, Four Thunderbolt 3 ports). I can't find any other monitor in this size that does this. - Supports Mac's Night Shift. This was an unexpected plus as i've not seen any other external monitor do this - Has 4 usb ports (2 rear + 2 side) Cons - Lacks a remote, however i can only say that because the AG493UCX had one. Something you don't know you need till you have it. - Not curved enough compared to over brands; With a monitor this wide the exaggerated curve i a must for you eye to take full advantage without having to strain or or shift focus as you look to the far edge. (AOC has gotten this right) - Headphone jack on the side vs rear. Its just too wide for this to be practical location to hook up anything without wires being an eye soar. ... show more

  • Broken Display - Not once but TWICE
I don't normally write reviews but this really disappointed me. I've had my eye on this monitor for months. I finally pulled the trigger on it and was let down by Beach Trading Company, Inc., not once but twice; in the same week. I purchased the LG 49WL95C-W 49-Inch Curved monitor from Beach Trading Company, Inc. on Sunday, 8.2.2020. The product was shipped fast to my home and it arrived on Tuesday, August 11, 2020. From placing the order to it being delivered, I was impressed on the turnaround. It felt like Christmas and I was very happy to receive my long awaited monitor. After carefully assembling it and placing it on my desk. I turned it on to discover that the display was broken. I turned it off in disbelief, and turned it back on again (like they tell you to do with any electronic item). Once turned on again, the display was in fact broken. The right side of the monitor (see picture 1), had a 1-inch thick black line with flickering lines running vertically down the display. It also had black lines running horizontally from this 1-inch thick line to the left of the screen. I immediately called Amazon, where their customer service rep. zipped through the process, and had my replacement order in and the pick up of the defective monitor set up as well in about 20 minutes. This put me at ease, because I had a solution to this issue. UPS was at my home the next day and picked up the defective monitor, and I believe shipped it back to "Beach Trading Company, Inc." On Thursday, 8.6.2020, the replacement monitor was delivered to my home. I again, carefully removed it from the packaging, placed it on my desk, connected it, and turned it on to find out this replacement monitor had a broken display. This time on the left side of it (see picture 2). This one too had a had a 1-inch thick black line with flickering lines running vertically down the display, but no horizontal lines this time. Again, I called customer service and they instructed me that an investigation would occur and that they were providing me with a full refund on the monitor. I did ask them to look into the warranty refund as well. Amazon did provide me with a credit for my troubles. This may be bad luck but two monitors back to back with issues from the same provider. My apologies for the long review but I hope this helps anyone looking to buy this monitor. ... show more

  • A Mac User's Experience
As a Mac user, the LG 49" Curved Ultrawide has exceeded my expectations! I read a lot of reviews and watched several YouTube vides about user experience with the LG 49" monitor. I waited about 4 weeks before finally deciding to purchase it, knowing there would be potential limitations that Mac OS may encounter. My Specs: - Mac Mini (2018): Running Catalina 10.15.6 (as of this posting). Intel Core i7 3.2 Ghz; 64 GB of RAM - an eGPU running Radeon RX Vega 56 (8 GB). This is key for my successful Mac experience. - LG 49" Ultrawide (Primary Monitor) connected via DisplayPort from my eGPU. - LG 27" 5K Ultrafine Display (Secondary Monitor) via USB-C from my eGPU. First off, I'm getting full resolution for both the 49" Ultrawide (5120 x 1440) and my 27" 5K Ultrafine (5120 x 2880). There is no major slowdown with my tiny (but mighty) Mac Mini desktop setup. I use my 49" primarily for productivity and work from home related projects & apps. However, I do play some MMO gaming on the display. It is definitely not designed for hardcore gamers, but for people who are seeking a hybrid solution for both gaming and productivity. The text is sharp and video playback is crystal clear. I love being able to have 3 app windows side-by-side (and a 4th app window if I use my secondary monitor) all running at normal speeds. What I would change: - Audio. It's okay for a built in all-in-one solution. But I wasn't happy with the sound and ended up purchasing external desktop speakers. Plus, when connected via DisplayPort, I couldn't have full audio button control via the keyboard - which I'm spoiled on and is a must for me. What I love about this monitor: - Resolution & real estate. I LOVE not having a bezel in the middle for a dual-monitor setup. I have been missing out and am now spoiled with the improved productivity. Working from home has become stress-free in terms of using multiple applications side-by-side. - Not having a built-in webcam. The secondary monitor already came with a webcam, and at first I wished the 49" had one, BUT I love being able to customize to a 4K Logitech webcam to sit on top of this Ultrawide. - Single monitor arm to hold this behemoth! I love having a minimal desk surface and opted to use a Monitor Arm to hold this 49" monitor. I'm using the Humanscale M8.1 and was surprised that the single arm is holding this 28 lb monitor. Super happy about how it "floats" above my desktop. Overall, I'm satisfied with this purchase and wish that I hadn't waited so long to decide. As a Mac user, be sure to have an eGPU to take full advantage of the screen resolution. Note: My first shipment arrived with dead pixels the size of a quarter. It's a pain trying to do the exchange via Amazon as they attempt to first connect you with LG to try and do the service rather than exchange. The second/replacement shipment arrived with no damage to the monitor. ... show more
