  • Fantastic for gaming and productivity, but expensive
I purchased this monitor as someone who wanted to get back into the Ultrawide market - my first one decided during a move that it didn't want to work anymore. Tragic, really but it was a 3 year old X35 that ran at 2560x1080. I knew this would be expensive, but based on reviews by some of the different tech YouTubers I've seen, I opted to pull the trigger on this one over the Predator X35, as it was a couple hundred cheaper with the main tradeoff being HDR400 on this vice HDR1000 on the Predator - more on HDR later. My overall impression - it's worth it if you've got the money to burn, but if not I'd suggest something at a lower price point. There's a 34" variant of this that's 3440x1440 with HDR and most of the same features that's about half the MSRP of this one. Pros- - Ultrawide, but a little taller. This is a 38" ultrawide monitor with a 24:10 aspect ratio as opposed to the traditional 21:9 or 32:9 of other ultrawides, which gives a bit more vertical screen real estate at 3840x1600. Normally, the 35" monitors that this competes with run at 3440x1440. It's not a massive difference, but it helps for productivity. - This display is GORGEOUS. Bezels are unoffensive, the light ring on the back is pretty easy to tweak (or disable), and gets REALLY bright. HDR looks fantastic (provided you know what settings to use, more in the cons). The included stand is hefty but doesn't take up my whole space or have an overpowering gamer aesthetic. I have a monitor arm, so I don't use the included stand but I wouldn't mind using it if I couldn't use the arm. - I/O is pretty standard - HDMI and Displayport with an integrated USB hub. You need to use the USB hub if you want to control the RGB software from your PC. There's some nifty features there and a couple of modes that aren't accessible through the OSD. - Includes everything you need. All of the display input cables and USB are included, and the packaging isn't absolutely massive like other ultrawides. Cons- - The 24:10 aspect ratio can throw off some games that normally do support ultrawides and result in small black bars on the left and right of the screen. I don't notice in-game, but it's definitely there in some big titles like Call of Duty. This isn't LG's fault, but it's a consideration to take that this isn't a super common aspect ratio. - Though the monitor officially supports 144hz and 175hz (on overclock), there's some pretty significant tradeoffs. Chroma subsampling and coronas can become a pretty serious problem if response time is set too high or the refresh rate is 175. This can also impact HDR performance. For me, the sweet spot is 120hz, Response time set to "fast", with HDR enabled (10bpc, YCbCr444). HDR Disabled I'm okay going up to 144, but that can be tough to achieve even with a 2080ti on modern AAA titles. Microsoft is terrible about HDR within Windows, so I generally disable it outside of games. - HDR400 is a fair bit dimmer than HDR1000 on competing monitors. It still looks fantastic and I'm 100% down with it, but if you want the best possible HDR experience, this ain't it, chief. - This display has a hefty price tag. I don't think its totally unreasonable given the feature set, but I'm of the mindset that they really need to do better on the marketing for this one to make sure people know what they're getting into with the different modes, HDR settings and so forth. - It's 2020 and this monitor doesn't have an internal power supply. I get that it would have added weight to a monitor that's already pretty hefty, but come on, the power brick on this thing is a literal brick. I used some command strips to slap it onto the underside of my desk and forgot about it, but it's frustrating that I had to do that at all. ... show more

Did lots of research into this and other monitors beforehand. Nothing beats the size of this monitor. That, combined with the pixel density of a 1440p 27in, gsync, high refresh rates, etc.. This is a premium monitor worth the cost. Most of the bad reviews are about the fan. I cannot hear the fan and I know other reviewers that cannot hear the fan. I'm guessing this is just a random squeaky fan, which I personally suggest might go away if you just deal with it. I have a projector that got loud a couple big times and it just went away. Also, I would recommend looking up how others have adjusted the settings. I have seen a complaint that when the monitor goes to sleep and wakes up, it resets some settings. This is only if you leave "deep sleep" mode enabled. I would recommend to everyone just to turn this off. So yeah, if you do your research, actually understand your monitor and all its capabilities, etc., then I can almost guarantee you will not be disappointed. There aren't a ton of 38 inch monitors and this one is the best in it's class imo. Last note: I currently have a 1080ti that smashed everything in 1440p. The 3840x1600 DOES challenge the card. Witcher 3 on ultra settings I sit around 55 fps. With gsync it is definitely playable, and I can't understate how much the huge fov makes the experience immersive and impressive. Personally, I got this monitor with the expectation that before too long, I will upgrade to the Nvidia 30-series (assuming it is comes out as rumored). One last thing I have yet to draw a conclusion on is the 10bit v 8bit RGB. I am excited about 10bit, but I want to do more testing to see if I can really tell the difference. You can only use 10bit at 120hz with hdr enabled, which is no problem with my current 1080ti. But once I can push the frame rates, I might find it worth sticking to 8bit, at which you can raise to 160hz. FYI, the 175hz compromises RGB to a degree that isn't worth it. If this information puts you off, I will enlighten you that a lot of monitors do this. At a certain point you have to compromise one trait for another, and of course they will advertise the best of each possible trait. If you consider this as a 110ppi, nano-ips, 1ms, g-sync monitor with either 8bit RGB at 160hz or 10bit at 120hz, then you will not be disappointed. Don't count the hdr for anything, lol. (Hdr 400 with global backlight isn't truly hdr according to every reliable source) K bye! ... show more

Update 6/26/20: Three days ago my replacement monitor failed in the same way as the first. The replacement lasted 6 months. I have reached out to LG for repair and have not received a shipping label yet. Also as a tip, if you send your monitor in, I would recommend not sending it in the retail box as they could not assure me that I would get it back. Here is my updated review after 6 months of use: The monitor is beautiful when it works. You really couldn't ask for more in a gaming monitor, MAYBE better HDR performance. I'll save you a long read and just sum it up here. PROS: + Excellent refresh rate + Beautiful colors + Bright backlight + G-Sync + LED lighting is cool CONS: - 175Hz is useless - Price - Quality control - Monitor frequently goes black for no reason - Very slow to wake from sleep - Didn't readily display post, wouldn't wake until Windows loads ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ Update 1/16/19: Deducting a star. Having to return the monitor. It stopped powering on. Hoping for a quick replacement, because this monitor rocks. ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ I did a lot of research on this monitor. Coming from a 5+ year old 30" HP ZR30W (2560x1600) I was looking for an upgrade. I was between the 34" and 38" ultrawide, and I'm very glad I bit the bullet and went with the 38" because I don't think I would have been satisfied with the 34". This is the best monitor I have ever owned, hands down. Games look absolutely incredible and fill up your entire field of vision. If you have the money, I cannot recommend this monitor highly enough. ... show more
