Style: Smart Dimmer (New Version) Color: White
I tried a GE Enbrighten smart dimmer first. I like the look of the GE better -- like an ordinary switch. But the GE dimmers just don't work with Halo recessed lights in our home. Two rooms, two different Halo can light models, same experience: the dimming is not smooth, and the lights flicker or strobe. I found another reviewer who had luck with Halo + Legrand, so I decided to give it a try! The good news: * The dimming works perfectly. The lights fade on and off smoothly, and we can dim them to any level and they hold steady, with no flickering or strobing. Awesome. Way better dimming than the GE. For the critical function of actually dimming all kinds of difficult LED bulbs, these are the best I've tried. The ok: * The dimmer switch itself isn't huge, but it does have a lot of wires, which require wire nuts (included with the switch). Our electric boxes are fairly new, and electrical code requires at least 8" of extra wire inside the box. Multiply that by however many wires you have coming in and going out, and it's a LOT to fit. With the extra wire nuts, and a medium-sized dimmer switch, the box is packed very tight. It was difficult to make it fit. I was seriously considering cutting all the wires in the box shorter to make more space. Fortunately I was just barely able to get everything in there. I put some electrical tape around the connections to make sure that smashing everything in didn't cause a short circuit. In my experience, a short circuit can fry a dimmer switch, and these are expensive. The bad: * No SmartThings integration :( The Legrand website has an FAQ page that says SmartThings integration and certification is coming. Yes, please! No details on when though. We use SmartThings as our central app for all home automation, and in this case, we wanted to create a virtual 3-way switch with the smart dimmer and a normal smart switch. We've done it for the GE Z-wave lights, and it works great. With Legrand, there doesn't seem to be any way to do it without running new wiring with a traveler between the switches. If anyone has figured it out, please add a comment and let me know how you did it. If they add SmartThings integration, then I'll rate these as the best smart dimmer switches available. UPDATE: I replaced the Legrand with a Leviton Z-wave dimmer. The Leviton works perfectly with SmartThings, and it dims smoothly. It's also easier to fit into the box, because it doesn't require wire nuts. You attach the wires directly to screws on the switch. I'll be looking for another use for the Legrand. ... show more

    • Good hardware saddled by bad smart app

The hardware itself seems very well made, and the ability to switch to reverse phase dimming would be great, IF it worked! There are lots of nice smart switches on the market, but unfortunately, a lot of them cause LED bulbs to buzz or flicker when they are dimmed. Many people may not notice the buzzing, but it is there, and especially noticeable to me in a quiet house. The biggest selling point of this dimmer for me was the ability to switch it to use reverse phase dimming, which eliminates the buzzing with LED bulbs. Unfortunately, Legrand gives you no way to change this setting other than through the app. Oh, the app! This app is complete trash, and not ready for prime time at all! Everything in the app feels amateurish and clunky, but the clincher is that it crashes EVERY time I try to change the phase setting on the dimmer! I even started from scratch with a factory reset of my phone and a reinstall of the app, and it still crashes. Since I can't use the feature that I bought this for, it is getting boxed back up and returned. For anyone reading this who just wants a nice, functional smart dimmer, and doesn't care about the LED buzz, I would strongly recommend the TP-Link Kasa dimmers. There are a ton of Kasa products, and they seem well made, the app is great, and the company is mature and not going anywhere any time soon. For people reading this who are specifically looking for something that doesn't buzz with LED bulbs, the only alternative I have found so far is the Lutron Caseta model PD-5NE dimmer. It is extremely expensive for a dimmer, and it requires a Lutron hub to work, but it is absolutely bulletproof, and Lutron is not going anywhere, ever. ... show more

UPDATE: I no longer recommend these devices..... After installation (June '21) these switches worked well, and reliably turned lights on and off according to the IOS app schedule. Fast forward to this year and they are not reliably working. I do not know if this is the device or the app but I have 2 sets of lights set to turn on and off as scheduled in my IOS app. Most days only one device turns the light turns on (either one) but not both devices. It has become a problem and I will be replacing these with Leviton devices which I also have and they've worked perfectly for me. One other annoyance with these Legrand devices and the IOS schedule is they are 1 hour off when changing to or from DST to EST. Bush league. I have 3 of the Legrand wifi switches and all were installed without issue and they all work as advertised. Scheduling on/off times is easy and the clock/calendar is updated from your cloud account after a power failure - excellent. My one lone complaint is they do not give the MAC Address for the device (the MAC address should be on the box or device). I had to disable my router's MAC ID access list to first find the Switch MAC address so I could then add it to my list. ... show more

As far as the actual hardware goes, these things seem pretty solid. Easy to install if you understand how switch wiring works. I can install one in about 15 minutes now, after having installed 5. A few gripes: the software occasionally reverses the state of the switch in the Android app. The switch itself is unaffected by this-- but sometimes I have switches reporting as on in the app when they are actually off, and vice-versa. This gets even more annoying when I try to use Alexa to control them since, to Alexa, they appear to be in an opposite state than they really are. I suspect this might be a weak wireless connectivity issue, since it only seems to happen on certain switches. The other issue is that you have to install an app on your phone that requires yet another account and registration. This is really the worst part about it. I get sick of having to manage yet another set of usernames and passwords for nothing. I have WAY too many accounts already. ... show more
