  • Challenging Build, Beautiful Outcome
I'm posting this review as someone who would not normally have put together a Lego set, but who dreams of visiting Neuschwanstein Castle someday and was eager to have a representation of it in Lego form in my home. I finally finished putting it together after working on it a few hours a day for several days. I must admit that I started to have fatigue with it about halfway though, so I decided to complete less steps each day. Even still, I would say that this Lego Architecture set requires a tremendous amount of patience and dedication. There are so many tiny pieces. I had a couple of panic moments when I had thought that one of the pieces was missing, only to discover it in a corner of my desk, or still in the bag. Overall, I am happy that I challenged myself. I now have this dream castle to admire each and every day. However, truth be told, I'm not eager to put together another Lego Architecture set anytime soon. I'm more into craft projects that don't involve predetermined layouts and assembly steps. But I'm grateful that I challenged myself to go outside of my comfort zone. ... show more

  • An Outstanding Example of Lego Quality
I visited the castle in 1976. The replication by Lego is outstanding. Instruction booklet is very clear. Because of the detail and so many pieces, the set is recommended for 18+. Probably a good idea. On-time delivery from Amazon, since this was a pre-order. Only 2 pieces out of 3400+ were missing. Lego has already confirmed that these pieces have been sent to me. ... show more

Great for the builder in all of us, and a lovely Lego replica of the famous castle.

  • Very clear instructions in book!
It is turning out beautifully. My husband and I are working on it together. He is 75 and has just rediscovered Lego. It is giving him an interest in life again!

  • Awesome collector's set for fans of Lego architecture. Fun multi-day build.
Pros: This is Lego getting back to its roots--not a lot of specialized pieces, but an entire beautiful creation made from thousands of non-specific pieces. This has always been the beauty of Lego--the non-specific pieces mean you can change or modify the set to your desire, or use the pieces in a completely different build. While this does have quite a few printed pieces (for the windows) they are sufficiently non-specific that they can be used in a variety of builds and could be used to model a bunch of things besides windows. Although this is aimed at the over-18 crowd, I think I would have been delighted to build it when I was 10 or 11 years old. So depending on the dedication of the prospective builder, it could be suitable for ages 10+ (although be aware that it is a 12+ hour build time so it's not great for people with a short attention span). This is a fun build for older kids up to adults who enjoy the methodical process and who appreciate attention to detail. I would say the level of detail in this set is impressive considering its size and the limitations of using non-specific blocks to build a model of this complexity. Everything from colors to proportions of the architectural elements to window placements and entablature details are pretty spot-on. Although the purists out there may be upset that they used deep red for the brick gatehouse instead of orange, I think the color choice was the right one to make, as orange would have been excessively bright and distracting from the rest of the model. You can tell the set designers took care to make this as true-to-real-life as possible without the addition of highly specialized or set-specific pieces or new color palettes (which I really appreciate). As another fun plus, the 350+ page manual includes a variety of fun tidbits and background facts about the castle. So in addition to the enjoyment of building the set, you also get a few factoids to spit out at dinner parties with your architect friends. In terms of value the set is currently going for $280 which is just a touch over 8 cents per piece. This is a little bit less per piece than many other Lego sets, but this does not include any mini-figures which are typically the most valuable pieces. So overall I would say value for price is average for Lego. Cons: Not for the faint-of-heart or impatient people. This is a serious build which will take a few days for most people. For some this is a huge plus, but others may lose interest. Just something to keep in mind. Final thoughts: I consider this set a fantastic choice for the dedicated Lego collector or architectural enthusiast. It's a fun build and a beautiful set once complete. Five stars all the way! ... show more

  • Gorgeous set, fun to build and final piece is display quality
This is one of the larger sets. Lego's architecture sets are some of their most beautifully detailed sets in my opinion. Lego will always be pricey and this one certainly is at $280, but is it worth it as compared to their other sets? This time I will say yes because this is a intricately detailed set with many pieces (3455 pcs). It says 18+ but if you have kids that are lego pros, this should not be a problem since it has Lego's very easy to follow instruction manual. My 10yo was able to build this in a day, I don't know the hours as he took breaks here and there to eat and do other things. The end result is a beautiful display piece and if you have visited this particular castle, it would make a nice memory piece. Great gift for those who visited or have a connection to the castle. ... show more
