  • It works readout very clear
Good basic accurate tester for stripping out electronic parts and running a quick test for values. Also find it handy to identify some parts that are not obvious what they are. Made up some test leads for quick connection. Testing fixture could be better.

  • You need this on your bench!
Sorry this is a bit wordy, but it is for good reason. My review is based on perspective obtained from making my living repairing and designing circuitry in electronics products. Before I purchased this little gem, I saw reviews making critical comments about the contrast, the “supposed” issues with the plexiglass case, having to open the case when replacing the battery and so on. As someone who has worked on countless products, I thought it would be interesting to check out not only the operation and accuracy of this unit, but also why people complained about breaking or having to modify the case to fit, the contrast and so on. Being no stranger to quality test bench gear, I was very surprised at the quality and accuracy of this unit! For a mere $13, you get a transistor, diode and capacitor tester, unheard of just a few years ago. Electrolytic and tantalum caps are the worst offenders in the capacitor-world and this product does an excellent job of reporting their capacitance value AND ESR value! I had absolutely no issues with the case either….all pieces fit and interlocked together and it took maybe 10 minutes to get it together, most of that time was spent peeling off the protective covering! I found the contrast to be very acceptable and you can always change your viewing angle of it doesn’t suit you. You’re only needing to look at the screen for a few seconds anyway so I consider this another non -issue. Replacing the battery does requires removing the top of the case, but this unit times-out 30 seconds after a test so battery life should not be an issue, and when you do, it takes 5 minutes….remember, this cost $13 and does things a MUCH more expensive unit does. I’m not saying you’ll never need any other test gear, but I am saying those who complain are probably weekend “tech” folks who are relatively inexperienced and can’t grasp the value this very inexpensive unit represents because they’ve never spent big money on test gear in the past, so they have a limited perspective……and if it dies in 6 months which I doubt, it was still worth it and I would purchase another one. For $13 you have a couple of choices, buy this or buy a couple of Fru Fru Lattes and see which one is around the next day. Enjoy! (see photos) ... show more

  • Very handy.
Works very well. Used it a ton with great results.

  • Great Entry Level Gadget to play with.
The plastic case was a bit of pain in the butt (having to peel the protective tap off the pieces and then assemble it). It was also a little tricky figuring out how the pieces go together and then trying to hold the pieces together while you put the nuts and bolts in to hold it together - almost need a second person to assist. I’m not looking forward to having to take it apart again to replace the 9v battery, but for the low price, it’s a neat toy to play with. And speaking of “toy”, it’s great for identifying quite a few different types of components. I’m not sure I will use this as a piece of “test equipment”, but you could. Had I not had to fiddle with the case as I did, I would give it 5 stars ... show more

  • Great Inexpensive Component Tester - Check Different Suppliers for Options
I have had one of these testers for over five years and it has served me well. I use it to test components in vintage audio gear. It finally failed, (which may have been caused by testing a charged capacitor). The failed tester came without the plastic case but did come with mini grabber test leads and a plastic battery holder. The tester I bought to replace the failed unit is the one I am reviewing now. Functionally and visually, it is identical to the failed unit. The difference is that this tester comes with a plastic case but does not include test leads or the battery holder. I found that the case was made to hold the battery holder so I swapped the battery holder from the failed unit onto the new unit (requires soldering two battery wires). Without the battery holder the battery would be flopping around inside the case. The new unit has the same test lead connection so I was able to use the mini grabber leads from the failed unit on the new unit. So I now have a tester with the plastic case, battery holder properly secured in place by the plastic case, and decent mini grabber test leads. There are a lot of sellers for these testers. It would be preferable, in my opinion, to find a seller that includes the battery holder, test leads, and the plastic case. ... show more

  • The build is not great; probably overpriced at $12 for the build quality
The tester itself seems fine; there are many like it that all seem to be based on the same open source design from mikrocontroller. The build of the board is not great and the case doesn't secure the battery. The tolerances are pretty tight but the alignment of the components vary so I needed to use some sandpaper to widen the hole for the button by about 0.5mm so that I could get the case together. The small cable at the top of the display was sticking out enough to block the top of the case from going in so I had to (very carefully) maneuver the case into position and squeeze the cable out of the way. In order to change the battery you need to remove the same 4 screws that hold the case together. As for functionality: it's certainly good enough to help you roughly identify a poorly labeled component; multiple readings on the same component show similar results so it seems to be reasonably precise, the components I had on hand were of unknown quality so I can't confirm accuracy. I tested a some capacitors of unknown quality; the measured values varied by up to ~3% for the same component and the components were off by up to ~10% from their rating. However those that were off by ~10% from their rating did consistently a value 9% to 11% lower than the rating so it appears that the unit is at least 5% accurate. If you only need to classify components and you don't need high precision or high accuracy then for $12 you could probably do worse. Though I suspect you could also do better. ... show more
