Description

Darkness will not last forever. Together we can climb toward the light. They were as troubled as we, our ancestors, those who came before us, and all for the very same reasons: fear of illness, a broken heart, fights in the family, the threat of another war. Corrupt politicians walked their stage, and natural disasters appeared without warning. And yet they came through, carrying us within them, through the grief and struggle, through the personal pain and the public chaos, finding their way with love and faith, not giving in to despair but walking upright until their last step was taken. My culture does not honor the ancestors as a quaint spirituality of the past but as a living source of strength for the present. They did it and so will we.In the same voice that has comforted and challenged countless readers through his daily social media posts, Choctaw elder and Episcopal priest Steven Charleston offers words of hard-won hope, rooted in daily conversations with the Spirit and steeped in Indigenous wisdom. Every day Charleston spends time in prayer. Every day he writes down what he hears from the Spirit. In Ladder to the Light he shares what he has heard with the rest of us and adds thoughtful reflection to help guide us to the light.Native America knows something about cultivating resilience and resisting darkness. For all who yearn for hope, Ladder to the Light is a book of comfort, truth, and challenge in a time of anguish and fear. Read more

  • A Must Have Companion for Navigating 2021 and Beyond
The written word of Steven Charleston is some of the most grounded, loving and honest reflective writing I have ever read. Initially, I noticed a friend share posts on social media and found him so consistently comforting and honest that I wondered who is this person and began following him. Thousands of others clearly experience this as well as his following has quickly grown. His newest book, Ladder to the Light, is a treasure that can be easily read in segments, all at once, or over and over. He offers reflections of wisdom he receives from the Spirit after morning prayers— noting the reason his daily writings may resonate so much is this is him relaying the voice of spirit and this book is his reflections on those messages. Charleston’s wisdom as a Native elder and Episcopalian Bishop shines in this book as he explains these times of darkness as being in the kiva (a place we have been before where the darkness is a step to birth or rebirth) and offers rungs of the ladder to lead us to the light. The wisdom of Native elders is powerful in his writing and serves as guideposts for this time and a recognition that no matter how dark things may seem, the light and ladder are always there. So if you are looking for grounding voices of reality to light the way through darkness, this is a must read and a great book to buy several copies of and share with others. Thank you, Steven Charleston, for your commitment to daily prayer and sharing your messages and wisdom with us. ... show more

  • For spiritual seekers
One of the most important books in helping me reconcile my conflicted feelings about Christianity and God. It's unlike anything I have ever read and I truly believe for me it was a gift from God to bring me peace of mind and heart despite all the questions and conflicts I feel with Christianity. After 68 years of living, I'm at peace with God and it came just when I really needed it.. READ THIS BOOK if you are a spiritual seeker!! ... show more

  • What a fantastic gift of light!
My social justice book club chose this book to provide some respite from the books we've been reading about our troubled history. We LOVED it! I LOVED IT! It is beautifully written - some of the prose like writing moved me to tears. It is healing, uplifting, wise and practical. I wish this book was required reading - especially for politicians, educators and religious "leaders". I found the topics of Truth, Community and Transformation especially inspirational. I have recommended this book to many people, and will definitely give it as gifts through the year. The messages are gifts and blessings. Thank you Steven Charleston for authoring such a gem! ... show more

  • “Good Medicine”
This wise and beautiful book resonates with the Quaker testimonies: Simplicity, Peace, Integrity, Community, Equality, and Stewardship. If you find this book strikes a chord, you may wish to explore The Religious Society Of Friends. I will be recommending this “good medicine” from Steven Charleston for our Meeting book study and will be reading it as part of my personal daily devotions as well. Thank you Steven! ... show more

  • A spiritual life raft
I gave this wonderful book to a good friend as a birthday present before I finished reading it. Because in this current turbulent moment what better gift was there to bring spiritual comfort? During this time of Covid and social tension Bishop Charleston’s social media postings have been a daily morning life raft for clear direction and encouragement for me. I have felt uplifted, hugged, pushed, and carried by his powerful voice. His capacity to use visual metaphors to increase understanding is a kind of first aid for weariness, tension, and doubt. Since this book is comprised of his daily postings along with his own ‘meta’ commentary upon them, I have no doubt that you, too, will feel the wind of hope in its voice. Time for me to reorder. Maybe I’ll get all the way through this time before that inner voice tells me to give it away! ... show more

  • Loved it
Reading Ladder to the Light was so refreshing for me. I thoroughly enjoyed learning about the author's perspectives and came away with a lot of inspiration to carry with me on my own path. The book really started to resonate once I reached chapter 5 and it was then (and in the few chapters following) that so many of the things that have been on my own heart lately started to come together in really beautiful ways. Thought provoking, poignant and full of wisdom; I will carry some of the words in this book with me for the rest of my life. This quote was one of my favorites: "Without kinship, a nation is a nation in name only. It is a random collection of isolated people, all competing with one another, bound together by rules that often favor the few over the many. Consequently, the foundation for community is inherently unstable. The nation is always susceptible to struggle and injustice. It lacks a spiritual core. Kinship provides that core because kinship means not conformity but relationship - deep, spiritual relationship. In the Native American context, this means every person's right to be who they are and believe how they wish. It also means they are part of an intimate family relationship, grounded in sharing, cooperation and mutual respect. It means being a nation without boundaries or hierarchies. it means being willing to take less so others may have more - not because it is the law, but because it is love." Thank you for sharing your stories and wisdom with us, Elder Charleston. I am grateful. ... show more
