  • Great issue
Format: Paperback
This is a thicker follow up to the ashcan issue, as in more pages and the editor promises not only more issues but also a series of krimi cyclopedias, the first of which is supposed to come out later this year. Prior to this zine and the promised cyclopedias, coverage of Krimi has been piecemeal, starting with short entries in genre-centric guides that focus on horror flicks and "psychotronic" flicks, Fear Without Frontiers (FAB Press), Famous Movie Detectives III, the Giallo Meltdown series, The Video Watchdog Book, books on the films of Christopher Lee and Klaus Kinski, and Scott V. Palmer's German Krimi Films, which includes Italian gialli and a Harry Alan Towers version of an Agatha Christie novel. None of these covered Krimi in either a standard setting or definitive fashion, thus this issue is a step in the right direction. The first chapter is on Rialto London. There is a page on The Oldest Profession (1967), a comedic portmanteau that is known today for having Raquel Welch in one of the segments. There is more on The Trygon Factor (1966), two versions of The Man Who was Sherlock Holmes (1937 and 1967) and the 1967 WDR-TV Sherlock Holmes teleserial, some unmade features and an unfinished one, The Last Mercenary (1968) and Praying Mantis (1982). Article two covers Tausend Augen (1984), Des Summer des Samurai (1986), and Der Madonna Man (1987), followed by an interview with Hans-Christian Blumenberg. Now, article three is more complex. It involves a Fredric Brown novel, a Bryan Edgar Wallace treatment, and how The Phantom of Soho (1964), The Screaming Mimi (1959), an episode of Alfred Hitchcock Presents, The Man with the Glass Eye (1967), and two Dario Argento features are connected. The fourth article covers Jack the Ripper, White Face (1932), The Devil's Daffodil (1961), Blood and Black Lace (1964), The Nylon Noose (1963), The Monster of London City (1964), Jungfrau aus Zweiter Hand (1966), In Frankfurt und die Nachte Heiss (1966), and much more, plus flicks with female serial murderers from 13 Women (1932) to Maigret Sets a Trap (1958). Article five covers Bryan Edgar Wallace's Death Packs a Suitcase and two movie adaptations and has a checklist of Bryan Edgar Wallace movies. Article six covers the TV show Derrick. Article seven covers Ladislas Fodor. Article 8 covers What the Peeper Saw (1972). The rest of the issue is Vice Versa!, which as alternate views of what this issue covers. Lots of pics, many in color, in the form of photos, posters, home video covers, paperback book covers, and the like. I look forward to future issues, and the cyclopedias. ... show more
