The Klein Tools Voltage Tester (detector) Pen works great and it is very simple to use. Just pop off the cap and drop in two AAA batteries (Included!), then press the power button. A green light in the tip of the pen will indicate when it is on and ready to use, then hold the insulated probe against the wire to be tested, or push it into a wall outlet; if current is detected the green light will turn red. The Klein Tools Voltage Tester can be used to detect electrical current in electrical outlets, appliance power cords, and power adaptors. It can also check for voltage in a ground wire or a neutral wire. NOTE: always test for electrical current in all wires and in all openings of an electrical outlet. I really love this little thing - it makes me feel so much more confident that I'm not going to electrocute myself. I found out on my most recent repair that this does't work on the low voltage of a doorbell though. It showed as off and then turns out I had the wrong breaker and when I touched the wires together they totally sparked. Had to go back and relabel the breakers and note that this is to be used for regular electricity, but not low voltage! ... show more

For a few years I have had an "older" version of this the of device which is a bit less accurate. Time for the inexpensive upgrade and it has already paid for itself in peace of mind and saving me from aggravation (not to mention saving me from getting shocked!). I have found these tester/indicators to be indispensable for both peace of mind and in tracking down that loose connection. I'm a DYR'er and my knowledge of home electrical, or lack of it, dictates I use these type of tools for safety's sake. The fact they aide in troubleshooting is a bonus! In comparing two devices (this and my older model) in a recent troubleshoot, I found this to be accurate and useful in isolating my issue. There are more "expensive" and technical non-contact voltage testers out there and if you are a professional, you probably already have one. If you are undertaking a large project, you might want to consider what you one. But I have found this one does the trick and using a second device for verification proved it. For an amateur like me who will use this once or twice a year, this is a sensible addition to any tool tray. Use it once and you will agree it is worth the meager investment. ... show more
