Description

Klein Tools CL800 Electrical Tester is an automatically ranging true root mean squared (TRMS) digital clamp meter that measures AC/DC voltage, resistance, continuity, frequency, capacitance, and tests diodes via test-leads, and temperature via a thermocouple probe. It also features a Low Impedance (LoZ) mode for identifying and eliminating ghost or stray voltages. Klein Tools Test and Measurement product line was exclusively designed from the ground up by electricians for electricians. • Features and Comparison
This is a great meter in terms of form and function. The exterior is very durable. The plastic parts seem very sturdy and there is a rubberized coating on the sides as well as on the dial. The dial and buttons are firm and feel like they are very good quality. I'm not an electrician, I flip houses for a living. I have an occasional need for a meter to test an HVAC capacitor, the continuity of a fuse, a faulty breaker or my car's alternator. I owned a Klein MM6000 about a year ago for a very short time. It seemed like a fine meter and worked well but I was hung up on owning a Fluke as they are known to be the best in the industry. I tend to gravitate toward the best of the best when I buy anything as there is so much crap out there. Since I didn't have much of a need for a meter at the time, I returned the MM6000 and started researching Fluke to determine which one I wanted to buy. Needless to say it has been a year and I just ended up with the Klein CL800. The main reason was price. I paid $120 on Amazon for this meter and it's features are equivalent to Fluke's that cost $300-$500. I would say the features contained in this meter are closest to what you would get with a Fluke 375 or 376 which are $329 and $468 respectively. Obviously the most important thing with a meter is that it is accurate. The specs on this meter, according to the data sheets, appear to be on par with many of the clamp meters from Fluke. This meter has so many great and convenient features. First of all it is TRMS. It tests AC/DC voltage to 1000V and AC/DC amps to 600A, and also handles millivolts. It tests continuity, capacitance, diodes, resistance, frequency and temperature. It has a setting for low impedance, it has a flash light, a back light, hold button, min/max, range, and a non-contact voltage tester. The non-contact voltage tester lights a red light when there is voltage present but there is no tone and it works from approximately 6 inches from a power source such as a light switch or outlet. Some of the things I specifically like about this meter are the fact that it has one setting for volts and one setting for amps and you use the select button to switch between AC and DC. This meter will also measure millivolts but there is no extra setting. You simply set it to measure volts and it will auto range appropriately. I also like the flashlight and the non-contact voltage tester. Most of the Flukes don't have either of these features. There is nothing about this meter that I don't like. I will mention a couple of things that changed from the previous models of the Klein clamp meters to the new ones. The previous models included an audible non-contact voltage tester, slots in the rear of the meter for lead storage, the previous models included a bar graph which this one does not, and the included leads are of lower quality and do not come with alligator clips included. These features would have been nice additions to this meter but are very minor in the scope of what this meter does. I would have to say this is a great meter for only $120. ... show more

  • Klein Tools CL800 - My go to multimeter
I recently added the Klein Tools CL800 Digital Clamp Meter to my toolbox, and I couldn't be more satisfied with its performance. It has become my go to meter. The digital display is clear and easy to read, providing accurate measurements in any lighting condition. The clamp allows for safe measurements on live wires. The auto-ranging feature simplifies the measurement process. I also appreciate the built-in flashlight, which comes in handy in dimly lit spaces. The durability of the tool seems that it's built to last, making it a good investment. If you're looking for a dependable clamp meter that won't break the bank, this is the one to get. ... show more

  • Works Well
Good product. Easy to read and audible alarm is loud enough.

  • Great meter with on exception.
Seems well made as expected from Klein. Seems to have every function other than checking current by letting the meter complete a circuit by touching to disconnected wires. Company said there are no internal fuses and should not be used for this common test.

  • Good DYI meter
Good DYI meter, I purchased this meter due to the fact it will measure DC amps, with the clamp. My recommendation for checking DC current is use a shunt , but this meter for the price will get a very close read. All the other function functions seem to work well. Meter is durable, leads hold up. Has many useful additions. For the price for general use it is a good meter. ... show more

  • Great (High) DC Amp Clamp On Meter for the Price - READ THE MANUAL FIRST!
I was mostly interested in the the clamp-on DC (high) amperage abilities of this meter for working on cars. I blew up my 20A feed through a long time ago on a very high voltage/low current gas ignition circuit and replaced it with this. I also have the Klein Tools for daily usage - volts, AC amps (clamp on), continuity and ohms. This one seems accurate at the DC amperage readings - but I cannot emphasize enough... READ THE MANUAL. It has a lot of neat features and functional tips I initially missed out on. I tend to toss the book aside and jump right into using a meter - put battery in and GO. DC amps was not working at all like the other meters I use for AC amps. You MUST press and hold “SEL” and set it to zero before using on the circuit. I find I have to do it relatively frequently during a particular session - not sure why, but it works fine if I remember it will begin to drift up and get “wonky” unless I reset to zero. It’s not a big deal for me because the price was reasonable and I’m not looking for super precision with DC car circuits... and I know I won’t blow it up because it’s a clamp on - but I still miss my old one for ease of use bench current measurements below 20A. But I paid a LOT more a LONG time ago for that one, too. I like this meter. ... show more

  • Solid meter, subpar case
I’ve had a fluke 87 series III meter kit that’s held up well for almost 30 years now, but it seems to have lost its ability to measure capacitance. I wanted an all-in-one clamp meter to save the trouble of having to pull out the clamp attachment when I needed to measure higher currents. This meter looks like it was made by Intertek for Klein, and it’s a great value for the money. Happy to report that it measures capacitance accurately :) The only thing I’ll criticize is the case. The zipper was not properly attached on one side. But I have extra canvas Klein pouches (made in USA) so I’ll use one of them. I didn’t think it warranted taking a whole star for something I would’ve replaced anyway, but felt it important to share. ... show more
