  • Decent linear reads and writes but slow NAND controller means it is bad for smartphone use
Color: microSD Card Capacity: 64GB Style: Faster (Up to 170 MB/s) *: Single
For my testing, I used a Transcend RDF8 USB 3.1 Gen 1 card reader. The reader tops out at around 98-100MB/s, which is the max for the UHS 1 standard. The 170MB/s advertising is based on an alternate operation mode that the card supports for reads, which deviates from the UHS 1 standard. Currently no camera or other similar device will use those operation modes, thus it is mainly suitable for quickly copying content from the card if you have a compatible card reader. While a decent price for the capacity, the possible use cases for this series of micro SD card is more limited due to the slow NAND controller used. If you look at the write IOPS, you will notice that it is only capable of around 4-6 IOPS when doing 4K random writes. This shows that the way the NAND is managed by the controller is focused purely on reading and writing large files linearly. This is find for use in a camera or other similar device, but anything requiring you to copy a large number of very tiny files to it, will encounter very poor write speeds. Beyond that, one bit of good news about the item, is it doesn't seem to be using QLC NAND which if possibly the worst thing to encounter in NAND storage. Storage devices using QLC will encounter large write speed drops after a few GB of writing. This is common in cheaply made cards that want to mislead on specs, as they can get the massive BOM cost savings of using QLC, but charge TLC NAND type pricing, while only offering a tiny fraction of the write endurance and not having consistent performance This card seems to use TLC NAND with no need for an SLC or MLC cache, as it is fast enough to maintain write performance across the entire length of the storage. This means that the card is suitable for high bit rate video recording such as 4:2:2 10 bit without much trouble. Cards using QLC as well as many counterfeit cards will have issues with video recording as they use a small SLC or MLC cache of a few GB in order to pass most common benchmarks, but the area that they cannot cheat on is a 100% fill test as you are measuring the performance while filling the drive to 100% with no breaks for any caches to empty. With this in mind, I can determine that the card I purchased is genuine, but the 1K - 32K random write performance is extremely low to a point where they are useless for such tasks. ... show more

  • MP3 storage filler
Color: microSD Card Capacity: 32GB Style: Fast (Up to 100 MB/s) *: 2 pack
I got these for my kids MP3 music devices as it only came with 8 GB of internal storage. I added music to these cards, put it into their devices and presto! They now have a full jammed device with music.

  • very slow writing speeds

it's ok if you only need to write once and read several times

  • Works as expected
Color: microSD Card Capacity: 32GB Style: Fast (Up to 100 MB/s) *: Single
We bought it to insert into our Garmin GPS. Without it the maps update was not possible. First we thought 64GB would be better, but GPS could accept a capacity more than 32 GB. So, I found this little thing, and it did the trick. So far it works.

  • Consistent write speeds > 200 MB/s even when full, weird hiccups on read
Knowing that flash cards tend to deteriorate in performance over time or as they get full, I copied a series of 46 gigabyte files over until the card was full and then read them back. The first write was 230 MB/s with a 255 MB/s read. Outstanding! By the time the card got full, the last write was at 205 MB/s with the read at 225 MB/s. Still very good. There are no dips in the transfer speed with writing, no "hiccups" that could interrupt for example a video recording, and it stayed consistently above 200 MB/s write speed even after being used for a bit. So this is good, no issue at all with recording 8K video. There was however a weird effect when reading the data back. It would occasionally stall out for a few seconds before resuming the copy. This is strange, but I'd rather have the hiccups happen on read than on write. It's also possible this is related to windows or my USB drivers. Testing with a non-UHS-II reader (but a quality one) I got 80 MB/s write and 90 MB/s read. This was expected to be lower since it can't access the full speed of this card. I was just curious what would happen - this is not representative, except perhaps if you use the included SD card adapter which is not UHS-II compliant for some reason (why?) Interestingly, there were no "dropouts" when reading at the slower rate (and writes were still consistent). Overall, an excellent card for recording high data rate video such as 8K 360 or other large filesize formats, and for dumping the results onto a computer quickly afterwards - you won't have to wait an hour for the file transfer to finish before you can start editing. Thumbs up from me. ... show more
