Description

'Without a knowledge of the action of fire, the potter's craft would not exist,' and it is that action which Daniel Rhodes thoroughly explores and explicates in 'Kilns.' In writing this book, Rhodes has drawn upon his own understanding of firing processes, as well as information which he has gathered from sources throughout the world. The first section of the book traces the development of individual kilns, stressing their firing principles and their strengths and weaknesses. Beginning with primitive firing methods, Rhodes moves on to the evolution of kilns in China, Korea, and Japan, and then discusses the history and growth of Europeans kilns. The principles and methods involved in kiln design and construction receive a thorough and authoritative treatment. The information which applies to the structure and size of any kiln, be it gas-fired, oil-fired, wood burning, or electric, up draft or downdraft, is the basis for discussion of methods and procedures required by specific kilns. Thus, all of the aspects of kiln construction and design... masonry construction, fuels, burners, and combustion, refractory materials, heat retention, and transfer... are covered. One section is totally devoted to kiln operation. Firing theory and techniques, temperature measurement and control, and safety precautions are among the areas covered. Many original kiln designs, accompanied by step-by-step instructions and diagrams, enable those who wish to build a kiln to proceed with both knowledge and confidence. The book is illustrated throughout with numerous drawings, diagrams, tables, and photographs. Read more

  • I looked for sellers at Amazon and was amazed at the number being sold and also the variety ...
For quite a long time I have thought about replacing this book as the one I once had "disappeared" a long time ago. I wanted another copy of it because it contains a tremendous amount of important information such as building kilns and firing them. Also important, at Alfred University the author was not only one of my instructors, but also a mentor, when I was working on my thesis. Recently, I finally decided to get a copy. I looked for sellers at Amazon and was surprised at the numbers of this book being sold. The variation in prices was of interest as well. Also, the various phrases concerning when it was printed and using some terms such as "reprint" and "print on demand" were a bit confusing. So, I decided to contact one of these sellers to see if they could enlighten me.as I had questions regarding exactly what those words meant. The reason for asking was that some customers complained that their books were poorly made. After looking over a number of sellers I decided to contact "millow3" just to answer my questions. I did so and was quite pleased at their response. I sent a request on the weekend expecting a reply at the first part of the week. Surprisingly, there was a response about two hours later. The information sent to me was quite detailed. For instance, I was alerted that in certain instances, one type of printing would not result in a quality book. Further, I was told that the books handled by millow3 were listed in a specific manner regarding quality and condition. Lastly, I was offered the opportunity to receive a picture of the actual book I was buying before I did so. This response was more than enough for me regarding who I would buy from. Because of their overall manner, I declined the offer to see the picture of the book and simply purchased it. When it arrived, I was very pleased. The book was exactly as described. This handling of a customer regarding questions, answers and concern about all those things struck me as proof of a very good business. I gladly recommend them. Giovanni. ... show more

  • 1968 Kiln Book
I am building a kiln and dooing my due diligence and research. In ways, this book is dated, but, in other ways, it is timeless. While I did not change my design after reading this book, it did reinforce my decision to build an Olsen style fastfire kiln.

If this is not the classic in English of ceramics practice, then I wonder what is. This book is written for specialist and novice alike.
