This mystery, starring a independent journalist, a k#ller for hire and a mafia wannabe, made me immediately focus on a small detail in the beginning of the story. Izabel Fenway, our Journalist, mentions how she had a copy of Marrow in her bag. I immediately looked it up, and found that it was about two serial k#llers who work together. It gave me what I felt was a hint on where the story was going. But it wasn't even close to where the story REALLY was going! I loved how this story just started like an explosion. Author Silverwood brings k#ller Adelmo and Izzy together in a very dangerous situation, yet...they bond? Sort of? "“You wanted truth? That is my truth. It’s not simple to say why because I don’t know the whole answer. It’s sick. I know this—wanting someone who will k@ll anyone except me.” I can taste the reality, inches away, hours away. The craving for a man like this. I’ve bathed in gore and squirmed in the grip of possessive, violent antiheroes through the words on the pages of my books for so fing long." "“But I have nothing else, no one else to ask for help from. You.” I raise my eyes and lock onto his. “You’re my only hope,” I smile weakly, “Obi Wan.”" The time that is spent between Izzy and Adelmo is important and so significant to the story. It happens in a crowded, small, intimate space where only they can hear themselves. And SOME secrets are told and alliances are made. I looked up the name Adelmo and it means "Noble Protector." I found it interesting that Author Silverwood decided to name her k#ller this! You as the reader will need to answer whether he lives up to his name at the very end of the book. I have since read Marrow as well. I won't say how much that book will remind you of THIS book. That will be up to you. My favorite part of the book is actually the very end. Author Silverwood always has so much dark whimsy in her stories, and I love that about them. They aren't your typical HEA, but they are the happily ever after that is correct and absolutely appropriate for her characters. She ends the book like this: "And our future? Bloody, world-shaking, and filled with l0ve-making and kisses, I hope." I smiled when I read that, because I hoped nothing less for Adelmo and Izzy. ... show more

You might start this prequel novella and say what the heck did I get dropped into the middle of? Trust the process and know that Cari Silverwood will bring you back around and into a world of CNC smut. Heed the trigger warnings before starting, but if you're like me and using it as a "checklist," go in blind and be surprised! Let me just say that this book opens with spice right at chapter 2, which is quite a way to start a book; definitely not a slow-burn. I'd note that while it is a prequel to a series, it doesn't have a whole lot of plot, and the details it does have get confusing (e.g. Izzy flip flopping on whether or not Adelmo is Dead Guy from 5 years ago). If you want a quick dark romance read with a lot of spice that is clearly setting up an environment for a series, this is a go-to book. Fair warning - you might think "I would never want a guy to kill for me in real life" or think you aren't into any of the kinks Izzy wants, but you will start to question yourself as you read along and wonder "maybe I do want that?"
