Description

The Bass Max is an upright bass transducer. It uses a "sandwich" design with two piezos layered together, one facing up and one down. This allows for a quick and simple wedge-mount into a bridge wing and ensures even transmission from the strings and from the body of the instrument. The Bass Max is very sturdy and has a high output signal that is balanced over the whole tone range. It is suitable for both arco and pizzicato playing styles because it transmits a broader mid frequency range. This enables the musician to change playing modes without having to adjust the amplifier. The connection jack is held in place by a special attachment clamp mounted at the A and D strings between string-holder and bridge. The wrapped cable eliminates disturbance. One Bass Max will evenly pick up the tone range of the double bass. It works very well with smaller bass combo amps. • Can't go wrong for the price.. I haven't tried anything different but am pleased
I was skeptical. I am a new Upright bass owner and I was not exactly sure what the best solution was.. I knew someone who had one of these and they seemed reasonably priced.. As well, I was familiar with their product from being an acoustic guitar player.. So, I pulled the trigger and bought.. I received it, had it installed on my cheap ole Cremona upright within 10 minutes and plugged it in to my Keyboard amp.. I must say, I was pleasantly surprised at the output of the transducer and equally impressed with the sound.. Well, Ok.. The sound seems a bit more Midrange than the actual bass. I thought this to be a detriment so I immediately dialed it out with the five band.. However, I found that I needed it when I started playing in the group. It has very decent sound and even when I picked up the bow and dragged it across, it sounded pretty good! I am pleased! Thanks K&K for a great product that is reasonably priced ... show more

  • The K&K bass max did the trick nicely. It fit in the slot that I had ...
I bought this to replace my old, lost underwood. I wanted something that did not sound so brittle when I dug in up high. I have an old blonde Kay. with thomastik spirocores. The K&K bass max did the trick nicely. It fit in the slot that I had for my underwood. It is slightly thicker, so I didn't need shims. Compared to my old Underwood, this is much more responsive, usually I have to turn up to play a solo, but the K&K really responded when I played hard, and it still had a nice warm tone up high, not nearly as brittle. The only weakness I hear is that it can sound a bit more boingy (think rubber band) than my underwood, which was a bit more controlled. I do not know if underwood has changed their design in the last 25 years, so bear that in mind with this comparison. ... show more

  • Excellent Pickup!
I bought this pickup to use on a bass at a school that I teach at. This bass gets used in the jazz band. The pickup sounds great! Installation was easy. Gives a smooth and even tone thorough out the register or the bass. Has the perfect amount of clear bottom that cuts through a big band. The bass players at the school who use the bass love it. ... show more

  • Descent
Good low end bass tone. Loses volume on the mid to high end notes. Gives a good authentic upright bass sound. Have it on a '41 Kay and running it through an LR Baggs para acoustic DI. Not bad for the money

  • Quick, simple, good sound
Great pickup for the price. I have an old upright which isn't set up yet properly for jazz / folk playing, but I needed quick amplification for a gig anyway. Bought this pickup based on other reviews and I was up and running 5 minutes after taking it out of the box. Few things: I'm not a pro jazz player, but I'm a decent musician with a good ear for music and sound quality. There are probably better pickups out there, but I'm really pleased with the dynamic range that I'm getting from this one. Plenty of lows, mids and highs. Other reviews and warnings are true: Do not try to jam it into the bridge. It should be snug, but if you force it too far, the ceramic plates will definitely crack. So far so good on that. Other people mention the need for a pre-amp, but I'm using it without one for now, and it does provide pretty good amplification and tone. I can see how a pre-amp would help, but it's not a strict requirement in order to go from no amplification to some. Last thing: I get very different tonal response depending on exactly where I position it on the bridge. Some experimentation is required to get "your" sound. ... show more

  • Great & Affordable Pick-up
Works great! The bridge notch was slightly larger than the pickup, but I wedged a small piece of cardboard to fit the gap. Installation took lees than 5 minutes. I was skeptical about needing a preamp at first but after playing at church through the amp and 15' speaker, I found that a preamp was not needed. But please note that this pickup tends to favor the lower notes of my bass. ... show more

  • Works for Jazz and Rock-n-Roll
I have ZERO experience with other bass pickups. I bought this because it was cheap. I've been playing guitar and bass in rock & roll bands since the 80s. My 12 year old son developed an interest in music and landed on jazz piano. He started landing some local gigs so I bought an upright bass to accompany him. This delivers nice warm smooth sound through my Fender Rumble bass amps. I even took my bass to my rock-n-roll band practice and it delivered there too. Overall, there might be better pickups out there, but this one does the job for me. ... show more

Works and sounds great. Easy to install, just had to enlarge the gap on my bridge a little and it fit right in
