  • More like a 4.5 out 5. But, weird inconsistency in the brand paddles' grit surface. So, a 4*
Color: 14mm
I've been playing pickleball for about 4 years. I just won women's single 35+ silver at Nationals. I've been with a few other well known pickleball brands, but this is the first time I've tried Joola. I've heard a lot about the company, and I know a lot of people who play with their paddles. We got a few of the top of the line Hyperion series paddles from Joola. If you look at my other reviews, you can see us compare the 4: Simone Jardin's 14mm and 16mm (swift and non-swifts), and this Ben Johns paddle. Ok, for the most part, the paddles are all generally really good. They have excellent length to the handle, I really like the grip they add, the paddles have lots of pop and I like the CFS grit surface for the most part. However, they're not much different than my other new paddles that I've picked up. I'm sponsored by another brand that I can't mention, and I feel like for the price, those are almost as good as these. However, there are some caveats: 1) My other paddles also have that same textured, grit surface that feels like high grit sandpaper. But, the grit was worn down fast. After a few months, there is an area in the center that no longer has any grit and just feels smooth. 2) The biggest caveat is the inconsistency in the Joola's grit surface. Now, three of the paddles, including this one, all have the same gritty surface. If I were to compare it to sandpaper, they all feel like high grit sandpaper that's used for polishing. But, the fourth paddle, a Simone Jardine, that uses the same CFS surface, has this out of this world level of grit. It feels like low grit sandpaper, and with that paddle, I can really add a ton of top spin to the ball. Even the players I played against were saying they could tell that my shots had a lot more spin with the Simone Jardine. I feel like if all the paddles had that same level of grit, I would rate all of them a 5+. ... show more

  • The 14mm Version of the Highly Acclaimed Ben Johns CFS 16, Extra Pace and Pop with no Compromises.
Color: 14mm
If you are a serious Pickleball player you've heard about Joola, Ben Johns, and the combination of both, being probably one of the highest acclaimed paddles, The Joola Ben Johns Hyperion CFS 16, why wouldn't Joola come up with a 14mm version of the same beloved paddle? Well here it is! Joola also released the Swift versions of the CFS 14 and 16 before releasing the non-swift CFS 14, i own the Regular CFS 16 (swift and regular) and i absolutely love the CFS 16 (non-swift), it was hands down what opened my eyes on how different it would be playing with a $50 Head paddle i got from Dick's Sporting compared to the Hyperion CFS16. Joola listened to the feedback and they came up with the Swift line a lighter, better weight balanced paddle, with the same features as the CFS 16, and while i don't know the specifics on the manufacturing process and the physics, they came up with the swift line, but they were missing the player segment who wanted the full weight or "density" from the non-swift versions in a 14mm paddle, and Joola delivered. Long story short this is a great paddle, in my opinion, way better than the 14 and 16 Swift versions. It'd be my all time favorite aside from the from the Regular BJ CFS 16, and it's not that the CFS 16 is better, it'd be a matter of preference of "muted" feeling from the CFS 16 vs CFS 14 which has more "pop", and even if you think that 2mm would equal around 12% thicker surface on the 16 and 12% more power on the 14, i can tell you with confidence, the power/pace is SIGNIFICANTLY higher using the 14 compared to the 16. The surface area is the same, the handle is advertised as 4.125" compared to the 4.25 on the CFS16 but to be honest with you, i feel no difference, the Carbon Friction Surface feels similar but not the same, somehow it feels "thinner" on this version of the paddle, the grit feels also finer and at this point its difficult to understand how that's going to affect the grit durability or if it'll increase or decrease spin, for now, it grabs the ball really well and creates lots of spin. The paddle feels a better balanced than the CFS 16, but when you strike the ball the feeling is different due to the absorption, the sweet spot, unlike the Swift version of the CFS 16, the CFS 14 remains satisfactory, predictable and consistent during my play time. To summarize, i am very happy with this paddle, it retains the characteristics and performance the BJ CFS 16, and the handle, quality feeling, construction, tape and materials all feel of high/premium quality. I'd say that with the game evolving, 14mm is becoming more, and more prevalent due to the extra ball pace generated, i'd day this is one, if not the best available in the market for that segment, and now i have the CFS 14 if i want to play singles, and the CFS 16 for doubles. ... show more
