I've been using chain hoists for a long time, and while Jet wouldn't be my first choice in hoists for my normal work - this model of mini hoist is worth the purchase for the massive convience it offers over using the standard 1.5 ton hoist from Reliable Equipment / Ratcliff which is our normal go-to model for Telco Line work. The Reliable Equipment model of hoists (RCH-1500) is both the smallest and lightest 1.5 ton chain/lever hoist on the market and has a bulletproof design that's been used by Bell Systems when it was being made by Ratcliff for literally decades - before Ratcliff went out of business and the design was bought by Reliable so they could manufacturer it. However - not all Line work requires a 1.5 ton hoist. Especially when that work is being done off a ladder, and that work is transferring and dead-ending two levels of small cables off a broken utility pole and onto the new pole. I purchased this mini hoist over a year ago SPECIFICALLY for this type of work - so I could avoid having to heave up and then deal with using an almost 20 pound chain hoist - while working off a ladder - when it's complete overkill for the task. Transferring or moving 1 or 2 sections/spans of cable TV and smaller copper phone cables or Fiber optic lines doesn't NEED a hoist that weighs 20 pounds - so I bought one that doesn't weigh 20 pounds. This thing is TINY and weighs almost nothing - but still has a 1,000 pound capacity. Small and light enough that I can just clip it onto my climbing belt, keep my hands free to climb, and not have to use a rope to pull up a regular chain hoist from the ground. The longer handle on this Jet compared to some other models is perfect for the amount of leverage you really need to tension / lift something comfortably. The added reach it provides is much appreciated while working in akward positions too. Really - it just works great and is a real luxury to have after you've struggled for years using normal/full sized hoists all those times you didn't need something so heavy. I purchased this 1,000 pound 1/2 ton model AND Jet's 500 pound 1/4 model. My intention was to keep one and return the other after I had them both in my hands and could compare them in person. I wound up keeping them both, but this is the model I grab more often. The difference in size and weight between them is really negligible at this point. They are both so small - using the larger one with the longer handle is just easier. I kept them both just in case I ever needed to use them both at the same time. I will say they can be a little clumsy to use at times, since the chains don't have much weight to them and the controls to shift direction are small, but that's gonna be true for ANY model mini hoist. It's a minor caviot. But yea - mini chain hoist for the win on a few occasions so far. The Jet model was a little more expensive compared to all the No Name models flooding the market but IMO was worth the price just for the increased confidence in the tool. Keep in mind - it's still cheaper than some other choices out there. IMO it's a solid choice, professional grade and worth the money to have a real tool instead of a toy. The larger hooks and longer handle on this model compared to a 1/4 ton hoist is a big plus and you'll appreciate having them. Edit - Just coming back to add - I now have Jets 1/4 ton and 1/2 ton mini hoists (the more affordable models) AND just added Jets "compact" (mini) 3/4 ton hoist. What a game changer.. I wanna say I DID at first buy cheaper knock off versions of the 1/2 ton and 3/4 ton hoists to try and save money. Complete waste of money. DONT do it if you're planning on using them in any type of professional environment or if you're using them on something that actually matters. The knock offs are garbage compared to Jet's hoists. Yes - the Jets are more expensive and you'll quickly learn why. Invest in your own safety cause it's worth it.

As soon as I opened the box I was in love. Quality tools are one of my pleasures in life. Question was, is this mass of steel able to work? Oh yes, and quite satisfactorily. It's first job was to hold a tension point on an errant tree we were extracting, and it did very well. Since then, I've used it in automotive applications, and used it to raise trusses onto a two story building. This should be a tool that will last me the rest of my life. The racheting mechanism is smooth, and very predictable regarding how much you need to apply to achieve your goals. Also, very little physical effort is needed to operate it. I'm quite satisfied.

Have had a 1/4 ton come-along for years and love it except for the short 5ft chain. this one is 10 ft . now I have a new love in my gang box. Seems almost daily I have a use for it. It's small and doesn't weigh much. Always surprised at what a 1/4 ton of pulling force can get done

These are a great come along for the price. But if you have any problems down the road, parts are really hard to get. The lead time for parts can be months.

Very durable tool absolutely love this thing have the 1/4 ton as well both work exceptionally well with pulling engines and heads on trucks and equipment great for distributing weight properly if you don’t have a good center point.
