  • JEGS 81047 Hydraulic Lift - Cost Effective, Sturdy Construction, and Good Customer Support
I am building a retaining wall using large granite rocks sold at the local gravel yard. I was killing my back and needed something to save all the heavy lifting - plus I wanted to be able to handle bigger rocks. While shopping for winches I came across this JEGS hydraulic lift. The price was reasonable and the capacity looked adequate for my needs. I could not be happier with it! I found a 1,000-lb tension scale and a Torin Big Red 1,500-lb Engine Leveler in Amazon's Warehouse deals, and added some 1,300-lb straps to slip under the boulders I wanted to lift. It works great! The hydraulic jack is rated for 3 tons which allows it to lift between 400 lbs and 1,000 lbs depending on how far the boom is extended. The engine leveler allows me to balance the load on the fly between the two slings I use to attach the load. The base is mounted on a thrust bearing which allows the lift to swivel. It takes a little effort with a 300-lb load suspended but I found I was able to control both up-down and swivel movements. A lot of fellas stop and watch when I am using it, and I get a lot of compliments like "now that's the way to go!" and "nice rig!" The kit arrived without instructions, although there was an exploded diagram showing how the parts fit together. I was a little worried that my truck bed might not be strong enough to hold the base in place, so I purchased two used 1' x 2' x 3/8" A36 steel plates (about $60 including shipping) to place under the base and spread out the force load on the truck bed. I sanded off the rust, primed, and painted the plates just before installing them. I drew up a proposed installation and emailed it to JEGS to find out if it would get the job done. They emailed back the next day and suggested adding a few more bolts in each plate beyond the base to help keep the plates in place, which I did. The hard part was drilling sixteen 11/16" holes in the plates and the truck bed. I have a small drill press and a Hitachi D13VF 1/2" portable drill but I had to learn about drilling steel (lower RPMs) and also how to sharpen drill bits, mostly from YouTube videos. After taking about 4 weeks to get all the holes drilled, the installation took about 3 hours to complete. If you have someone to help with tightening down the bolts it will go even faster. Where the plate between the base and the other plate extended outward, it sat 3/8" above the truck bed unsupported, so I shimmed it up with washers and bolted everything in with 5/8" hex bolts, washers, and lock washers (not supplied). Then I bolted the turntable to the main arm, placed the thrust bearing in the base, and placed the turntable inside the base so it sat on the thrust bearing. I attached the boom to the main arm and the jack, slipped in the boom extension and pinned it in the 400-lb position, and the lift was open for business! The first time I pumped the hydraulic jack's handle to raise the boom, nothing happened. I had to open the valve on the jack (1 turn counterclockwise) and pump the jack handle 10 times to prime the jack, then close the valve. This is also done after bleeding air out of the fluid, which needs to be done occasionally as part of normal jack maintenance. After priming the jack, the lift worked as expected. The bar hanging off of the main arm swings out to help swivel the load in and out of the truck. The vertical range of the lift is more than adequate to lift most anything I need into bed of my 2004 Ford F150 Heritage Long Bed, over the tailgate if necessary. This F150 weighs about 4,400 lbs, which should provide adequate counterweight for lifting the full 1,000-lb capacity of the lift. The steel plates seem to be doing their job - no sign of the lift leaning over due to the truck bed warping under load. The heaviest load I have lifted so far is about 350 lbs (a boulder around 2 to 2.5 ft in diameter). I recommend attaching a scale so you know whether you are overloading the lift. When I am driving, I leave the boom halfway up and strap each end to the lumber rack attached above the truck bed to keep the lift from rocking and swiveling while traveling, which will fatigue and weaken the steel. When I am not using the lift I lower the boom all the way down to the folded position, tie a rope around it to keep it folded, slip it out of the base, put a weatherproof cap over the base, and store the lift under cover. In the folded position, the lift is easier to carry and the hydraulic jack's lifting ram is protected from corrosion, dirt, and accidental abrasions on its polished shaft. Overall, I am very pleased with the JEGS 81047 Hydraulic Lift. It has performed as advertised, and JEGS was quick to respond to my installation questions. If you need to lift heavy loads into your pickup, this is a cost-effective solution. ... show more

  • Helping me move my shop to new location
Mounted to the front corner of my car hauler trailer. Used 8 grade 8 5/8" bolts to secure it to the steel deck and rail. I am using it to lift all of my heavy shop equipment onto the trailer for a move. Worked pretty good on my 500lb cabinets. My only complaint is that there is only a single bearing at the bottom of the swivel. The top rides on a rough weld surface against the ID of the outer pipe. This seems to cause it to be a little hard to rotate at times under full load. If there was another bearing or even a bushing here it would be great. Maybe that is just the price point it is at as it is the cheapest I could find in this design. Overall I would buy again. ... show more

  • missing hardware
The only problem I have is there were not enough nuts and bolts. You need six bolts/nuts for the base ,then you need six "MORE" bolts/nuts for the boom to the base-MISSING..Looks like the Quality control at JEGS isn't too good.

  • Maybe should have rated this a five
I didn't rate this a five as I'm not using it for it's intended purpose, a truck bed. I sue this to lift heavy item from the garage floor to a second level storage area. I have an electrical winch mounted on the unit and then raise my stuff up and swing it over to the storage area. Not used every day but it has worked flawlessly every time I have used it. I'm happy. Price is fair and quality is okay. ... show more

  • Bearing fell apart
Well built but just fell apart while assembly… Took a couple hours and lots of grease to get it repaired…

  • Zero disappointment.
Works great. No issue with the assembly or parts. It arrives in two boxes and I had a concern that one box might be missing. The customer service was amazing. Within five minutes of my emailed enquiry I had my response and they had checked the tracking numbers. I can't tell you how much I appreciate that level of attention. Great work! ... show more
