  • The Jean Baptiste 290AL Student Saxophone - Love at first sound
The Jean Baptiste line of saxophones is owned by the reputable Sam Ash Music stores. Some Jean Baptiste alto sax models (manufactured in Taiwan) have also been marketed by Selmer as Selmer horns. The JB 290 AL Eb Student Alto Saxophone (under review here) is made in Vietnam and considered a step up instrument from earlier models at Sam Ash. While it is marketed as a student saxophone it was made with professionals also in mind and compares quite favorably with some highly regarded brands (Yamaha, Selmer and Jupiter for example). I tested the JB 290 alto sax with the help of a sax pro and noted the ff: Mouthpiece: the one on this student model is made of plastic rather than the hard rubber that you find on professional saxophones. It generates sound of general brilliance. Keys: the keys on the instrument have quick reaction and do not stick. Keys are covered in beautiful white PVC that look like mother pearl. Pads: they tap softly with no resistance and no noticeable leaks. Playing: the horn sounds brilliant in 3 octaves +. Tone: this is a bright sounding instrument that is not too bold or dark. It is mellow. This could be the result of the mouthpiece as well as the quality of the reed which is a Rico #2 (a soft student reed). We tried a harder reed and generated a tougher, bolder sound. For that I recommend the Vandoren (blue box) reed. When played with the Vandoren reed #3 ½ the sound is warmer and airier. But notes below low C# do not sound with ease. Using the Vandoren TENOR sax reed #3 ½ Java the sound projects on par with the Rico #2. All notes sound with ease including notes lower than low C#. Stick with a softer reed to play low C# notes and lower. Each new reed alters the sound, which is no surprise. The nature and quality of reeds varies per maker and per box. This horn sounds best with a soft reed. The instrument arrived with no noticeable scar or dings. Register keys have quick reaction time with octaves. It has a yellow brass finish and a high F key. The carrying case includes one neck and two shoulder straps, a pull through and cork grease. The neck strap can use an easy to fit hook. We played the instrument in a large room at a mild 68 degrees. Hot weather would have impacted the horn somewhat and generated a different sound. In conclusion this is a quality instrument for the student. As with all musical instruments longevity will depend on the care its owner gives it. ... show more
