Description

“Amanda K. Jaros's In My Boots does what some of the best works of nonfiction do: it takes the reader on a journey—in this case, a journey that is as much mental and emotion as it is physical.” –Amy Butcher, author of Visiting Hours: A Memoir of Friendship and MurderWhen Amanda K. Jaros learns about the 2,160-mile Appalachian Trail after college, she walks away from a sheltered life dominated by an angry and volatile father and does something unexpected: spends six months backpacking. Alone. She expects to pass the time in the solitary and peaceful wilderness, reflecting on her life's direction. Instead, she finds herself part of a community ripe with stinky socks, buckets of ice cream, and trail magic. What matters on the trail is not a hiker's past or parents, her fears or failures, but rather, what matters is the connections we make with each other. In My Boots recounts a challenging physical journey following the trail over the windy balds of the South, through snowstorms in the Smoky Mountain National Park, and above the tree line to the alpine zones of the White Mountains of New Hampshire. The journey is also emotionally transformative as this twenty-three-year-old leaves behind the compliant and scared girl she once was. With each step away from her damaged childhood, each new friend, each stop in another rural trail town, she comes to understand that to succeed on the trail, and in life, it turns out, the path she walks must be her own. Pleasure to share Amanda’s young life’s story. Personal and touching. Kept me coming back for the next trail portion, and the next life experience. Appreciate being let into her story, and the epilogue satisfies wanting to know how things turned out. Perseverance and determination wins out. Well done Amanda ... show more

  • A good book
Format: Paperback
I am a hiker and enjoy reading books about hiking the national trails. This is a well-written, easy to read book. The book is more about the author's relationships with her family and fellow hikers than it is about the Appalachian Trail. One thing I have a problem with in so many of these books by thru hikers is their criticism of day hikers. I am always happy to see day hikers, as I am happy to see people out enjoying nature, especially if they have children. Not everyone has long periods of time off, or others that support their hikes. Many have responsibilities for children, pets, or ageing parents. Still, she was only 23 at the time, so the book should be read through the eyes of a very young person. I would definetly recommend this book, as it is a very interesting personal story. ... show more

  • Fantastic read!
Format: Kindle
Someone - I can't remember who - recommended this book as one of the best AT thru-hike memoirs. It is! It's the right mix of introspection, description, and childhood memories. I especially appreciated the epilogue; I'm glad to know how the author turned out after the hike.

  • A truly inspiring read
Format: Paperback
I have read many hiking memoirs and this has been one of my favorites. Amanda is an exceptional writer and her honesty and grit pour through this book. It's a reminder that we, as humans, need to do hard things, and when we do, we realize that anything and everything is possible.

  • Inspiring, Honest. A Glimpse into Adventure and Growth
Format: Kindle
At times, the book is a little slow, but it's worth it. It's inspiring to read about the kindness of other people and see the growth in the main character. C. Clement

  • life
Format: Kindle
The author’s description of the Appalachian trail is a lot like life itself. Good times, bad times, hard times, fun times, lonely times and times full of people. People come and go in life, some for a short time others longer. In the end we all have to hike our own hike.
