  • Great Post WWII Film
Actor Brian Donlevy plays a wealthy businessman who is married to a gold-digging, shrew of a cheating wife. I don't want to spoil the plot for other viewers, so I'll just briefly say that there's an attempted murder, true romance, a spunky love interest, false imprisonment, and a suspenseful trial. Donlevy usually is characterized as a bad-guy-gangster, but in this film he portrays a betrayed and hurt individual. Ella Raines plays the role of a strong woman who is widowed and running a gas station/garage. One of my favorite actresses of that era is Anna May Wong, who helps to turn around the court case taking place. Charles Coburn is always a joy to watch, and he portrays a witty and dogged police detective with excellent people instincts. This movie is post WWII, and briefly interjects the troubles of unemployment during those years. It was also fun to see the covert advertising for items popular for midcentury: Rexall drugs, Mobil gas, Gruen watches, Pabst Beer, Coca Cola, Raleigh cigarettes...I guess you have to be older to appreciate those things. I can't address issues that other viewers had after purchasing this film on DVD. I watched this through Prime and the video was good. If you like B/W, midcentury crime, suspense films, you probably will enjoy this movie. ... show more

  • Unforgettable
We live in the town of Larkspur, California in which a large part of the movie was filmed. The building in which the heroine and her mother lived is today a landmark restaurant on Magnolia Blvd. The fire station is exactly the same. and many of the buildings from that era remain (mostly boutique, upscale, renovations to be sure) still, the gentle character and the heart quality of the town and it's people is still here, and it is wonderful to have found a film that lets you visit it at its beginning. San Francisco scenes are quite wonderful too ~ especially those set in old China town. The story is full of unexpected turns; the acting is superb, and the message is unforgettable. ... show more

  • A very good film noir, but pick a good DVD release.
Since there are plenty of good reviews on the movie, I'd like to focus on the DVD releases and quality. I first purchased the "The Film Detective" release which turned out to have terrible video and audio quality. I returned it and went with the "Alpha Video" version which is much better. I haven't seen the third version that is offered, but I'd recommend the version that I now have which is the latest release and the "Amazon Choice". Also, I rated this movie 4 stars due to the DVD quality limitations, but would give it 5 stars with a good blu ray remastered release. ... show more

  • Image release is a burned DVR, not pressed DVD
I needn't add to the reviews about this excellent film noir, but want to draw attention to the fact that this pictured Image release, at least my copy, is no longer a pressed DVD (silver surface), but a burned DVD R (with azo blue/purple surface). We don't know how long these burned DVD Rs last, but they're not an archival medium, and some users may have problem playing them in their DVD player. That said, knowing this, I would still purchase this, because the film is so wonderful, and at the same time the price is very good, not overblown like the Warner on demand DVD Rs (which I also sometimes purchase if the film is really good, and the disc is on sale). Regarding the image quality, I think it is very good. ... show more

  • Impact – The so-called (Film Detective Restored Version) Buyer Beware !!!
Because of the age of this film (I949) I wasn't expecting the "restoration" to be pristine. A grainy and somewhat fuzzy image is to be expected but I was hoping to see a picture that had a reasonable balance between brightness and contrast. The frequency distribution of tones on this "restoration" is terrible. The film is not just faded, the whites are blinding or washed out and the blacks are too black—dirty looking and dark. I wonder if the Film Detective DVD of Impact is truly a "restoration" at all. If so, then I hate to think of how bad the original source material was. It appears to be a transfer from an extremely faded print and nothing more. The fact that there is no Top Menu and that the DVD launches, immediately, into the movie was a red flag. As soon as the credits started to roll on my 39-inch TV I knew I had purchased a complete disappointment. Using the remote on my Sony Blu-ray I continued to hit the "next" button. All throughout the film, the lack of image quality was the same. In one place, during my quick perusal, the dialogue was almost indistinguishable, so the audio is not so hot, either. I love the movie. It's a nice, little B-noir but I can't watch the Film Detective version as it takes all the joy out of viewing. There is an upload of Impact by Old Time Movies on Youtube. It's not perfect either, but it's from a much better print and watchable, even in full screen mode on my 27-inch computer monitor, thank you. If you are a collector of vintage material on DVDs I am sure you are familiar with the following: no matter how careful a buyer is (even seeking independent reviews on video quality) one still gets burned on a purchase from time time. Buying old films that have been digitized can be a crap shoot. I took a chance on The Film Detective after finding an online review by Glenn Kenny, "Restoring the Classics: Phil Hopkins on Blu-ray Restoration Label the Film Detective". Quote: "One label that recently caught my eye was The Film Detective, which came out of the gate offering what it called “restored” versions of classic and cult films that have fallen into the public domain—that is, titles which can be reproduced without paying licensing rights and/or residuals ... Labels trucking in such stuff are usually not to be trusted—the ability to propagate material on the cheap means that those who do it will do it on the extreme cheap, e.g., with no consideration for getting image and sound quality right. But the sales pitch offered by Film Detective on its website was appealing ... I checked out a couple of its titles ... and was pleasantly surprised to see them presented in versions that were better-than-serviceable, if not as pristine as the versions of films you’ll see from the aforementioned labels." (i.e. Criterion, Arrow Video, Synapse et al.) Maybe The Film Detective did a decent job on other titles (I don't know) but their release of Impact is simply bad. I took a chance and threw $10 away. I won't be purchasing anything else from the Detective, ever. ... show more

  • Good But Not Great
This is a good, entertaining movie, but nothing truly special. I added it to my Watchlist thinking it would be more of a classic Film Noir, but it was a more standard old crime movie. The story was more contrived than being genuinely clever, but the characters were likeable and it was reasonably entertaining. 3 STARS ... show more

  • Great movie!
We found this movie unexpectedly on Tubi, but liked it so much I bought it. Now we can watch it without commercials and get drawn into the gripping story without interruption.
