  • DON'T LISTEN TO NEGATIVE REVIEWS! Almost didn't purchase bc of that- Works better than the original.
I was REALLY going back and forth about purchasing this nostalgia machine because of the negative reviews, but decided to say whatever and bought it... I've got a brand new 65" 4k TV and connected it to the HDMI cord provided and played 6 of the older SNES games I found that hadn't been played in over 15 years and they looked & sounded AMAZING!!! So don't let the bad comments deter you from making a great purchase! I'll make an update if something bad happens immediately! ... show more

  • Excellent build and performance
I had some reservations initially about buying this Console, but I really wanted an easy solution to play my Super Nintendo games on my HD TVs and after a bit of research, I decided to take a chance with this model. The build quality is really good. I can't stress this enough, especially for a console at this price. Additionally, it plays all of my cartridges with no problem, including my original cartridges and the Data East collection (multi-game cart) which I ordered at the same time. I played through 2 hours of Chrono Trigger with no noticeable lag or any visible glitches with audio or video. I found that game and every other one I tried (DKC, MK, PM) very playable at the 16:9 aspect which I was not expecting. I also tried the switch to change the aspect ratio to 4:3 and everything looked good there as well. I was very impressed with how good the games looked on my 4K TV, better than when displaying from my SuperNes Classic. Part of that may be the features of my particular set (A Visio M series 65") but I was very impressed in any event. To my ear, the sound was flawless although there may be some games where that is not the case. I actually found the sound to be just as good as or better than the audio output from my original SuperNes. All in all, this is well worth the asking price. The console is also packaged very well - see photos. It includes 1 Micro USB cable, One HDMI cable, one RCA audio video cable and one AC adapter. I also really love the light that comes on in the right corner when the unit is on. The cartridge eject button is a great feature as well and works just as it should. Currently, I am powering the console off of a USB hub connected to my PC, but there is an included AC adapter as well. The controllers are really good. They feel perfect in my hand and operate well with no lag at all. The 10 foot cord is a nice touch as well. I was really surprised at just how good these controllers felt. I suppose that some people got defective units which is why they posted negative reviews, I'm not sure. I will update this if the performance degrades. ... show more

  • Garbage
These 5 star reviews have got to be fake. I am on my second unit in about 7 months. Amazon handled my return for the first unit I ordered. The SRetron has several odd visual glitches with transparency effects and an odd blurry background effect when scrolling. For some reason the console starts to malfunction after moderate use. I take great care of all of my cartridges. The issues i would have with the unit would be that the screen would go black during mid game. An even odder issue would be graphics randomly displayed from the last cart i incerted. The positive thing I can say about the unit is that the included game pads are top notch and that I find them much more comfortable than the original snes gamepads. ... show more

  • If you keep expectations in check, may not be useless?
I picked this up in the hopes that I could avoid spending $200 on a Super NT for my Super Gameboy 2 playback; didn't quite work out. Plus: Cheap, cute, functions Minus: constant jitter during rapid movement, confirmed on 3 displays and two SupaRetron HDs. Bad. First off, let's get the positives out of the way. The design's nice enough, compact system about half the overall area of the original SNES, and it's got HDMI out for 720p output. Composite (A/V) out optional if you've got an old clunker TV, and a 4:3/16:9 shift switch to go between stretched out widescreen or maintaining original aspect; don't be a jerk, keep that at 4:3. Comes with two controllers which, in the hand, are pretty suitable. There's rounded edges on the back to give a more comfortable grip, I could honestly see myself using the controllers outside of necessity (much like the Classiq N, which I would buy ONLY for the controllers, which are even better than OEM Nintendo pads) aside from reasons I'll get into later. Got a bit of heft to them; they feel fine overall. Overall the picture quality, in a bubble, for still frames, is definitely fine. 720p won't be winning any sharpness awards but it's certainly sharp enough. If you're not sitting right in front of a 54'' 4K TV, it's definitely crispy enough for the average Joe. Sound reproduction for SNES titles, while not R E F E R E N C E Q U A L I T Y are certainly good enough that I don't think many people will casually tell the difference between the original system and this sound output. The cartridge slot doesn't appear to be a contact murder machine; it's got a nice secure fit, and other than Super Famicom carts (like the Super Gameboy 2, which you sorta have to slide in, feel for the connection, then press down firmly, maybe more than once) stuff fires up right off the bat, first shot. That's the end of the good stuff. What I found, and what I'm shocked nobody else seems to be reporting on, is the AWFUL horizontal jitter everywhere there's rapid movement on screen. Mario Bros, Arkanoid, heck even Tetris, everything's shaking up and down like a mild earthquake is going off, but ONLY where there's motion. I tried this on a 4K television, 1440p desktop monitor and a 1080p LCD television, and it happened everywhere. It's not great! Makes me think there's some lazy encoding going on where to save cycles it's still-framing anything it doesn't see a need to update, but the stuff that does gets a lazy pass or something, it's pretty gross. The controllers, honestly, if you're used to bad D-pads, this is about average. You're gonna miss inputs frequently, or crouch when you mean to go down, it's not "good". And while this system WAS compatible with the Super Gameboy 2, the sound was very muffled, as if someone had choked off the high end of the audio gate. This may not be an issue with the original Super Gameboy, but that plays everything too fast and the audio's off even on original hardware, so that's not very useful to me. And while I love the "Eject" button, it also launches carts off into low orbit, so be ready to catch them before they reach escape velocity. Hopefully that is less violent as it wears in. So, not perfect. However, for a plug and play cartridge solution, it exceeded my very, very low expectations of Hyperkin hardware. It's moderately better than the Retron5. I applaud it for not being emulation, and while I don't enjoy the graphics shaking around like I'm buzzing on sugar, I could see this being a good test unit for cartridges for collectors, hoarders, game trade-in stations; it's cheaper than a Super Nintendo and easier to get up and running in general. If you don't mind the caveats, it's fine. I could easily move this up to a 3/5 with all that in mind, but I won't because I'm salty my cheapo solution didn't work out and I'm gonna have to shell out money for a decent modern solution. Such is life. Here's to another five years of not buying their junk now that my Alzheimer episode has passed. Edit: On the off-chance that this was a defective unit (again, NOBODY is talking about the motion jitter!) I went ahead and tried a cross-ship replacement for the unit... it behaved identically. It's not AS obvious on 1080p but it's still happening, and obviously super noticeable on my 4K/1440p monitors, so... back it goes. ... show more

  • A defective unit?
Not acceptable, 3 out of the 5 games I've tested have issues that renders them unplayable. Maybe I got a defective unit. If something changes positively, I'll update the review. EDIT: Amazon replaced my unit and it was indeed a defective item I had. It's all working as it should now, games look great with the HDMI. The only reason I'm not giving it 5 stars is because the cartridge slot feel too tight, feels like you're going to break the cart with all the force you have to use to insert or eject them. Other than that, I'm quite happy now with the product. ... show more
