Description

With its straight handle and long, narrow and straight edge, the Hultafors carpenter axe Stalberg provides you with the precision any skilled craftsman demands. The finger notch in the axe head allows a grip where your hand is placed, almost straight above the center of the cutting edge, for increased precision. The axe is hand forged and made from Swedish quality steel in the forge at Hults Bruk. The forging tradition goes as far back as 1697. This axe is named after one of Hults Bruk’s most experienced blacksmiths from the first half of the 20th century, Ernst Stålberg. Take care of your axe and it will stay a faithful companion for many years to come.

  • I love this axe.
A couple of years ago, I decided I wanted to carve a spoon out of wood. Over the years, I have accumulated an arsenal of axes for limbing, felling and splitting, but the concept of carving with an axe was new to me. I liked the look of this axe, and took a swing. So, if you take a good look at the axe, you will notice that it has a straight blade and a straight handle. If you compare it with several other hatchets and hand axes, you will notice that they mostly have curved blades and handles. When I think about what a carpenter might use an axe for, like in the good old days, I imagine they would use it as a hammer, and to chop notches out of lumber. What I have ended up using this axe for, is squaring up the wood after I have split it with a wedge. The straight blade works great for this, and the head is relatively heavy, so I just need to drop it where I want it. Having said this, the head is relatively heavy, so you don't want to spend all day on it. Then I will switch to one of my carving axes to cut in the details. I think this axe would also work great for splitting kindling, or even carpentry. For backcountry work of felling, limbing, or splitting larger wood, I would go a different route. I don't remember if this particular axe was perfect out of the box, but if you are buying an axe, you might as well plan on buying some sharpening equipment and learning how to use it. When you are not busy chopping, it can be cathartic to spend some time honing your edges. ... show more
