Top Amazon Reviews

  • Great starter set
Style: Standard Set, 60-Piece
This is the best hobbyist grade set I've found on Amazon. It compares directly to very similar sets costing twice as much and delivers performance of much more expensive sets for non-pro use. Yes, "non-pro" is difficult to define. But if you only need the occasional thread chased or hole tapped, this set is all you need. (On the other hand, if you need to do actual, regular machining tasks and you're looking to save some money -- you REALLY need to save up and buy pro tools. You won't get there wasting your money a bit at a time on hobby-grade.) The machining on the taps and dies is clean and crisp. I inspected each piece and didn't find any crunchy bits worth noting. The handles are just ok -- I've broken tap handles of this type before. The T-handle is an exception as it is quite solidly constructed. The handles are easily addressed by buying higher quality stand-alone handles for this set. I noted several negative reviews based on the case and, yes, it is basic quality. But the seller is apparently listening because they have more/less exactly followed one reviewer's recommendation to add a piece of layered foam to hold the taps in place when the lid is closed. It works well and, although the taps all lay loose in their 'slots' (it's really a tray as there is no retention at all), none move when the lid is closed. (FWIW: I recommend hot gluing the provided foam insert to the lid so its not floating around when open.) I do wish the slots gripped the bits as they are subject to jumping out if the case is tilted/knocked while the lid is open. But look, these are minor nits on what is otherwise a surprisingly well machined set -- and a great value at this price. If you're not a pro, my advice is buy this set, replace the handles when ready and replace any heavily used taps or dies with high quality when you wear one out. In this way you minimize investment on a set full of pieces you're unlikely to ever use and you can focus additional money on quality exactly where you need it. Recommended. (Just be careful not to drop that case!) ... show more

  • Good quality for the price. Good quality for the price.
Style: Standard Set, 60-Piece
Already used the tap set. Seems like pretty good quality. Drilled and tapped my 88 Trans am spindles for an ls1 big brake kit. Worked like a charm and didn't break any bits, even when I accidentally bottomed out the tap.

  • Cheap tap and die to get you by
Style: Standard Set, 60-Piece
All the supplied tooling works as it should. The taps and dies leave a nice finish. The die stock holder has a weird centering mechanism I found to be useless. The smaller taps and tools fall out of their slots when you carry the case.

  • For the Price a Decent Set, Great for DIY, Not Great for a Pro Shop
Style: Standard Set, 60-Piece
This set seems to be a good bargain for a DIYer who wants a decent general use set for random tasks that come up. The Pros: 1. I measured all the pitches on both the SAE and Metric taps with an Irwin thread pitch gauge and all of mine were spot on. (They also included thread pitch gauges, but I didn't use the included ones) 2. I've used these to tap into stainless steal with no issues. 3. I tested an Irwin tap I have vs. one from this set (same size) and I didn't notice any huge difference in performance for that size (it was 10mm 1.25 pitch). Make no mistake though, the Irwin tap is better, they are just significantly more expensive for a similar set. The Cons: 1. The cheap blow mold case does not keep these all organized well, even if you leave that "sheet" in there. If you expect to move these around a lot you're probably going to need another solution or else you'll go insane with an exploded mess every time you open it up. It also arrived to me in an exploded mess when I opened it. 2. The "tools" they throw in to use the taps/dies are terrible quality and you'll probably want something better. They can probably get the job done in a pinch, but they suck. Conclusion: For how cheap these are you I can't really complain at all. This set does not scream high quality to me at all and I have no idea what the long term reliability will be like, but if you're in a similar position that I am in that you want an "ok" set for the once in a blue moon job you have these should be sufficient. As others have said if you're a "pro" you might want to invest in a name brand set. ... show more

  • Decent Quality
Style: Standard Set, 60-Piece
So far, I have used the taps and dies for several projects. Both to create threads and to chase threads. So far they are holding up well. Good selection of taps and dies that are needed for daily use.

  • Cheap but adequate
Style: Standard Set, 60-Piece
This is a very inexpensive set that covers most thread sizes useful to regular folks. The quality is not as good as machinist-quality taps and dies: not surprising at this price. One drawback is that the M4 and M3 as well as 10-24, 10-32 and smaller dies are undercut. The side used to start a thread is flush with the die surface, but the full thread side is recessed. This means that they cannot complete a thread abutting a large shoulder. ... show more

  • Here's a Real Review
Style: Standard Set, 60-Piece
Don't listen to the other reviews that complain about this set. If you are a weekend warrior looking to tap a few holes every now and then, this set will do the trick, at a very reasonable cost. Here's some tweaks to help resolve some issues mentioned in other reviews: -Leave the foam piece in the box that it comes with, and nothing will shift around when carrying. -Use drops of blue or red Loctite on the tap handle threads, to keep them from unscrewing during operation. -Put a little grease on the threads of the small tap handle collet. This will make gripping taps a smoother process. A tap is only as good as your technique. Do the following to get good threads every time: -Use the correct tap drill size! Look up a printable chart on google images, and tape it on the wall above the toolbox. -Use tapping oil, like Tap Magic. A little container goes a long way, and makes all the difference in the world. Apply a couple drops to every hole you tap. If tapping steel, you'll want to apply several drops throughout. -Check the tap alignment, front and back, left and right, before starting to cut the threads. -Turn the tap 1/2 a turn or less, and back it out slightly to break the chip. If you are doing a deeper hole, or tapping steel, you will need to remove the tap periodically for cleaning and re-oiling. -Blow out the threaded holes before usage; remaining chips and particles in them can cause galling during use. -Do the same for the dies, but make sure the starting workpiece OD is correct! Periodic removal isn't necessary, since you can clean these out with compressed air externally. Definitely still use oil! Do all of that, and you will be please with this set. Hope that helps. ... show more
