  • If you haven't picked up a valved trumpet, pick up this book.
Here is why I value this book: I bought my daughter a Bb ("B-Flat") trumpet as a surprise gift and discovered that music teachers and tutors do not want to teach a student to play a trumpet unless the student already knows how to play. So I needed to find her a book, but I was sure that there were two types of books that I must NOT get her. Firstly, I mustn't saddle her with an exhaustive tome so comprehensive and extensive in scope that she might become overwhelmed trying to dig deep enough into it to find the basic knowledge and wisdom that she needed at that point. The other type of book that might jeopardize her enthusiasm for this new endeavor would be from an author who could not remember what it was like to be a very beginning musician and so would leave out many of the basic tips and knowledge that even an advanced novice has come to learn through much trial and error. I have found that most books on such subjects suffer from exactly this weakness. But not this book. When the book came in and I started reading through it I could hardly put it down because, on whatever page I found myself, he was promptly addressing all the issues that had been puzzling me and giving clear, concise explanations that made it all very clear in a lively and engaging writing style. Most authors often leave me wondering, "what on Earth is he talking about". Not this guy. I can't wait to present my daughter with the trumpet and this book! ... show more

  • It was not what I expected.
It was not exactly what I expected. It's a bit of a dry read. It's more on the history side of learning the trumpet. It's less of a music book and more on the technical side of playing the trumpet. It has some good information but not a lot. That's why I gave it three stars.

  • OK but could use editing.
It is a true beginner's book, and that's what I was expecting. However, the poor editing is inexcusable for a published book. For example, the word processor error: "Error No text of specified style in document." couldn't have missed by an editor, as it is at the top of almost every page. The book is filled with colloquialisms, which makes it suitable only for children. The hype certainly doesn't live up to the reality. Still, it is useful as a fifteen minute introduction. Buy it, read it, and move on to a more serious tutorial. ... show more

  • Good fundamentals
This does a good job of covering the fundamentals that one needs to begin playing the trumpet - names of the parts, how to take care of the instrument, etc., not just notes and finger position.

  • Fantastic for absolute beginners, but a slight problem.
This book is totally appropriate and excellent for someone picking up the trumpet for the very first time. It covers all of the necessary basics of the instrument along with the basics of learning to read music. It's very nice that fingering charts and audio examples are included. But this is where the problem is . The audio examples are hosted on SoundCloud and they are great. The problem is there are few files that are missing, hopefully the author will see this and add the missing files. Specifically files 10, 11 and 12 are missing form SoundCloud. Otherwise completely wonderful and helpful book to start with. ... show more

  • Too wordy, Not for children
I was looking for a beginner trumpet book for one of my piano students wanting to learn trumpet. This is completely inappropriate for children, or for that matter, it's not a beginner trumet book, but a wordy book about Trumpets.
