  • Detailed Review from a New Drone Flyer - Feature Rich at a Good Value Price - BUT with a really lousy camera
Edition: HS100
This is going to be a bit of a detailed review. For those who want to get right to the point, this is a feature-rich, well constructed drone that is excellent for beginners and experienced flyers alike. Now for a bit more detail. To start, I am a novice drone flyer but I have a lot of friends that have been flying drones for years. I've heard stories of drones flying away never to be seen again so I was looking for a drone that was beginner friendly but that was feature rich enough that as I get better as a flyer, my drone can continue to grow with me and in six months, I'm not looking to upgrade. Likewise, I didn't want to break the bank. I wasn't even sure how much I was going to like flying drones (a LOT) and in case I crashed or lost the drone, didn't want to be out a lot of cash. I received a lot of recommendations to get a DJI but didn't want to spend that kind of money. Looking at the feature set, camera and flight time of the HS100, I thought it was a very good value for the price. Lastly, my main reason for getting a drone was to take aerial photographs and video for construction planning and real estate marketing. The components were well organized in the box and securely packaged. From first glance, you could tell this was probably a well thought out product. I was surprised and very happy to see that that HS100 comes with a replacement set of rotor blades and landing gear. I've flown RC planes before and as I've mentioned, heard plenty of drone crash stories so I know that at some point, these spares are going to come in handy. Assembly is a quick and easy and Holy Stone provides two small screwdrivers that are the only needed tools. That was another nice touch since some of the screws are very small and you would need an eyeglass screwdriver to install them. So far so good. I liked the build quality and look of the drone. Drones are a cool thing and they should look cool :) and this one does. The remote control is very lightweight which is nice so you aren't lugging around a clunky remote while you are flying. The physical integration of the remote with my iPhone was seamless. Next I tried to setup the drone for the first time and had difficulty because the pre flight instructions are not very clear. At least they weren't to me. This is the only knock on this drone so far and I would have given it a 4-star rating but I called Holystone's tech support and to my total surprise - someone answered the phone. They emailed me a link to a brief YouTube video showing a preflight tutorial that was easy to use and had me flying in minutes. Nice job guys. I'd still like to have more documentation on things like: Can you fly the drone without a cell phone connected and if so, how? Can you take off and land manually (not in the auto mode)? Flying was a total blast. As previously mentioned, this is my first drone so I don't have any comparison but I've flown remote controlled airplanes before and this is MUCH easier. Auto take off and landing is a fantastic feature for beginners - it's going to save a lot of broken parts - and it makes flying the drone easy. All the controls are well placed on the console and the drone is very stable in flight. Take your hands off the controls and it essentially hovers in place. The stabilization is very effective and I had the drone zipping around in front of my house in minutes. The controls to me have just the right amount of sensitivity - the drone is very nimble but if you press one of the joysticks all the way down, the drone doesn't just go flying off out of control. I live on the beach and it was a windy day so I started in the lee of the house and kept the HS100 close to the ground. I wanted to make sure the wind wasn't going to take the drone or cause a crash. Then I flew it up into the wind above the top of the roof of my house and I was surprised to see how well it handled in the wind. One tip: don't try and take pictures or especially video on a windy day. As stabilized as the drone is, it still bounced around in the wind and you end up with off axis images and really jerky video. As with all drones, flight time isn't as long as I would want it to be. I didn't time my flights but it seemed like that batteries lasted 10-15 minutes. I ordered this with a spare battery and would highly recommend you do too. In fact, a couple of spares would be a good thing because the last thing you want it to get into flying and then have to quit right as you're starting to have fun. The batteries take a while to charge (a couple of hours). I've just started using the camera and video features and as noted, they don't work well in a lot of wind. I'm waiting for a calm morning and then will fly up high and shoot some footage and stills. I tried playing with the camera pan feature but don't think I've been able to get it to work yet. As I do more flying - higher altitude and longer distance, and take more imagery and video. I'll update this review. As of now, I'm very happy with this drone and think it provided the right set of features for me - a beginner that wants to be able to grow into more advanced flying. And the price was right. First Update: I've been flying the drone for a week now and can definitively say it's great for a beginner. In GPS mode, with the auto takeoff and landing, it's fairly hard to crash. In addition, when in this mode and you take your hands off the controls, the drone comes to a hover in place. So if things are getting out of control, all you need to do is let go of the controls and the drone will come to a stop and hover. Then you could even hit the autoland button if you needed. It is very stable and relatively easy to fly and I was surprised at how well it did in windy conditions. The four engines produce enough force to allow the drone to fly into a stiff breeze and keep it steady in hover even when windy. I live on the beach and it's windy here a lot. Yet, it's highly maneuverable. Again, I don't have a lot of other drones to reference but this is fun to fly and can zip around. I disabled the beginner mode so I could take it higher and farther out and had no issues. I like the look of the drone and so far it's been sturdy. I've only had two harder landings with no damage or issues. If you really want to enjoy this drone, you need at least one additional battery (2 total) or two would be better (3 total). It takes a couple hours to charge batteries and with only a single battery, you're done in 15 minutes or less. I've tried the non GPS mode which requires a lot more attention to flying but is still pretty stable. In addition, I used follow mode which worked great and the drone followed me as I rolled down the street on my beach cruiser. I would doubt that this drone could keep up with me down a trail on my mountain bike but if you are out jogging or walking, it will do the job. More to come as I get into the photo and video. Photos and Video: One of the main reasons I purchased this drone was to take aerial photography. If you want more detail, read on but in short the camera on this drone is really awful. 720p sounds great and the Holystone website doesn't give more detail other than it's "epic" but I would really say epically bad. For background, I've worked as a professional photographer and wanted to use the drone to shoot aerials of real estate. When I first looked at the captured images, I thought I had done something wrong. They were incredibly grainy and and lacked detail. I hadn't seen anything like that in a digital image in years which isn't surprising. Then I did more research. For comparison, the camera in this drone is under one megapixel and a current iPhone is 12MP. The original iPhone in 2007 was 3MP. There are other things that go into image quality than just the resolution of the sensor including lens size and quality and processing engine and both are weak on the HS100. Images lack good contrast, saturated colors and it has a problem with even reasonably high dynamic ranges. Add that all together and you get some lousy images. I'm very disappointed in the poor performance of the camera especially given that it was one of my primary needs in a drone. My fault for not doing more hard research up front but the website purports the imagery to be hi-def and epic and I thought epic would be good enough. With that said, I'm dropping my review to Four Stars. This is still a very feature rich drone that is friendly for beginners and more advanced drone fliers. It is really fun to fly. Just don't get it if you are looking to do a lot of photography or videography. ... show more

  • Neat little Drone πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘. with Updates :/ 3rd update
Edition: 110G Drone
Third update: +3 stars Update 3: despite being a little frustrated with my experience, customer service came through again! I still have the first drone that flies just fine, gps works, just doesnt have a camera for more than a minute. Its enough to fly around though. Still waiting on the new camera, but if that works i will be thrilled. Also received a replacement for the second one that drifted off. My only advice to be cognizant of where you fly it and keeping real line of sight. All in all, still a good deal Update 2: customer service went above and beyond, I received a replacement drone and then they also sent me a new camera. but the camera is going to take a few weeks. enjoyed flying the new drone, logged a couple flights, but then when coming home to land it and replace the battery for another flight, it started to drift off, then disconnected and flew away. have not since found the drone. So not I am out a working drone, propeller guards and an SD card (purchased separately). while the first time they did go above and beyond for customer service, this time they are asking me to wait on the camera to see if it fixes the first one. while it isnt an unreasonable request, the return window is closing pretty quick. I do like the drone, but I am now at two separate issues and with no working drones. going to give it a week to see if the camera arrives and if that fixes it. otherwise, I may return it. Frankly, if they werent so helpful the first time I would have returned it by now. update 1: Drone lost connectivity to the camera. Not sure if it was from a crash, but just started disconnecting. Drone still flys and gps functions work still. All the positive comments about the awesome customer service are true. Holystone is taking care of me! Day 2 initial review!! I have played with mini drones and super cheap drones, and thought it might be time to go a little better and more capable in a drone. I agonized for a couple days, going back and forth on higher end drones and even less capable drones. Not sure if i wanted or needed certain features or to spend the money on a drone I might very well crash or lose due to inexperience. I looked at the higher end holy stones. As well as other brands. and finally found the HS110G model on sale during prime day. Was a step or so above the beginner drones, has some features (GPS follow, maps etc) I had never used for a price that was great. So far Pro: -Comes with great little carrying case. -2 batteries (I didnt find the second battery until day 2) -Comes with spare blades. -Descent flight time per battery -App is cool and easy to use -Easy to fly and stable in both modes. -Durable (so far) -Good quality in the camera (way better than i expected) -handled some wind better than expected. -great deal for price. Neutral (to be fully transparent) I havent had enough time to fully push the envelope or try all features in earnest due to winds picking up and gusting. -Havent figured out the map thing yet to fly a route (wind is preventing me) - havent figured out the wave feature to make it take pictures (also havent really tried either) -havent had the auto return featute kick in. -follow me worked but the camera orientation stayed the same so i was off camera immediately. Not sure if I am doing it wrong or its a super basic type follow function. Cons. -I would say this may not be good for true beginners. It is considered "advance". Would consider the mini or the hs 200 for kids or people really new to drones until they learn the characteristics. Although it is easy to fly, there is more to screw up. - set up is little more involved (instructions are great though) and take a few minutes eact time you fly. -it is a light, small drone, although it handled some wind better than I expected. Wind will be an issue for operators. -have to charge the batteries through the drone itself. (Seperate chargers are available) -charge time took awhile. -doesnt come with propeller gaurds. -camera is fixed, so during flight the view can be jerky. But, I knew that was going to be the case from reading reviews. -no collision avoidance, which i also knew, but being i generally suck at flying these. Would be nice to have Couple of lessons learned. -Follow the directions closely.. like really closely -read tons of reviews talked about these things developing a mind of their own (all sorts of different models and brands, but less with this one?) Well my first couple attempts at flight with the cell phone yielded the same results for me. But i was doing it in the house so i wouldnt lose a drone in case i did something dumb...which i did. 1. When connecting to the drone wifi. Turn OFF autoconnect to other wifi sources. My phone disconnected and recconected to my original wifi. Causing the drone to not respond and do its own thing..i did this twice. Its how i can say it is durable so far. 2. Make sure you have the right model selected in the app. 3. Make sure during set up you have the drone oriented in the direction you will be flying. All in all I really happy with it so far. But I do see this as a gateway drug to bigger more advanced drones!! ... show more
