  • Not worth it, Or is it?

There's not really anything wrong with this harmonica, exactly, but it definitely isn't work the price over other options. Pros It came very well tuned. It's the only Hohner I've ever bought that came in tune. It looks really pretty. It's a pretty good harmonica. Cons Despite the advertising that this is one of the best "out of the box" harmonicas, the only thing that was the "best" was that it was in tune. That is uncharacteristic for this brand, but not for other brands - some brands are in tune reliably. It does not bend easier than a standard Marine Band, a Rocket, or a competing brand. In fact, I had to do a lot of reed gapping work to get good bends. Overblows are much harder than on my Marine Band 1896 - more on that in a bit. The fit and finish was poor. Despite being advertised as a sealed comb, I noticed during reed gapping that my comb is only sealed on the front of the comb. The top, bottom, sides, and back are unsealed. This creates a problem for the harmonica's performance. Not only will the comb wear out, but it doesn't seal air tight to the reed plate. Bamboo is an uneven surface, and it needs to have a sealant applied and then be sanded to seal air tight. I'm going to have to seal and sand it on my own in order for it to perform well enough to get overblow notes as consistently as my original Marine Band does. This is really disappointing, considering that the extra cost of the Crossover is supposed to bring higher performance, not extra work. It's expensive. Really expensive. There are cheaper options that play as well or better in many respects. Recommendation I would recommend this harmonica to a beginner. It's one of the most well-tuned Hohners, and a beginner may not have the tools or skills to re-tune a harmonica. It doesn't bend or overblow without some reed work and maybe more extensive sealing and sanding, so I wouldn't recommend it for a pro or intermediate player who is needing to play more expressively. If you can tune and do some reed work on your own, you'll have equal or less total work to do on a standard Marine Band 1896, and it will be cheaper too. Would I buy it again? No, probably not. I'll stick with the original Marine Band 1896, or maybe I'll try a Marine Band Deluxe. ... show more

  • Best diatonic harmonica

The Hohner Crossover was recommended by my Blues Harp teacher. What a gem! It's now my favorite harp. Bamboo comb! Very clean and bendable. Plus, there's a code for free lessons on Harmonica.com, which is just fabulous!

  • Can't really go wrong with a Hohner
Style: Single
The media could not be loaded. Really great and beautiful harps. They have a bright and slightly raspy sound. I expected excellent quality from the harp, but the quality of the case really surprised me. For those few u-blockers, this is an older style with the plates overlapping the comb. It can irritate your tongue. But the smaller holes with wider comb between them makes single notes easier than for instance a Lee Oskar. Bend seems about the same as a Special 20, bit it's a little less bluesy sounds in my opinion, though that could just be inexperience. ... show more

The media could not be loaded. If you are beginning the harp but seriously want to enjoy playing then it is worth the money to get the hohner marineband crossover. Just do it. You won't be sorry.
