As an avid backpacker, doing 3 trips a year, been sitting on a lot of rocks and logs. Enter the BTR stool. Wow. This thing is a game changer. Trying this out at home, when you have chairs nearby, doesn't show you anything. But when you get out in wilderness, this thing feels like paradise. At one point, one of the legs came out of its sleeve. I was able to fix it and continue to use it. On other trips, it came out again. I emailed the company, not really expecting a response. Not only did they respond, they sent me a new BTR. Wow. Love this stool, and this company!

Post-season edit: Yep, this stool is still awesome. It comes with me on every backpacking trip. It's perfect for a quick sit while cooking, and rides in an external pocket so I can pull it out anytime I drop my pack for a rest. Solid gold. Original review: So far, the 17" version is everything I've been searching for. My gear closet is filled with three years of failed attempts at finding a seating option that is strong enough to handle my 6'2", 245 pound self and still be light enough to add to my backpacking loadout. It's still pretty snowy here in Idaho so the stool has only seen deployments in the family room and garage so far, but I think I may finally have a stool to fit the bill. I've always sought a taller stool: most backpacking chairs/stools have your backside resting a foot or less from the ground, which always has me feeling like I'm getting ready to eat my own knees. The height of this stool is enough that I feel like I'm sitting rather than squatting, and I can get up from it without undue effort. For tall hikers, I highly recommend the 17" version, the sitting posture is more than worth the extra couple ounces of carry weight. For a stool this tall, the weight is excellent, at just under a pound. This is equal to or less than most other seating options I've tried. The "Phantom Lock" technology used in the telescoping legs is very intriguing: while it's very easy to deploy and stow the legs, they do not collapse under load. It's a cool technology, but I'm going to have to see how long that holds up, I hope there aren't any unexpected collapses as the functioning parts wear down. The stool definitely lets me know that I'm technically overloading it by five pounds with a bit of a squeak when I sit (everybody's a critic, I tell ya) but otherwise it holds me and my heft rather well. I appreciate the larger seat on the taller stool. Comfort wise, it's not going to replace your living room recliner, but it will do for cooking over a backpacking stove or taking a break on the trail.

DANGEROUS!!!!! DO NOT BUY! After just over a year of ownership and less than a dozen uses (due to 8 months of winter), I finally took this on a 5 day backpacking trip! On "day 2", one of the "buttons" came out of the seat and the stool collapsed and popped off a leg. I fell flat on my but spilling my water bottle all over me. I put it back together and on day three after a 10 mile trek, I set the stool up on the shore line and it did the same thing, however this time, I fell not only on the solid rock shoreline, but also on the leg that popped off- Bruising my tailbone! The rest of the hike out was painful and uncomfortable. Now it is 5 days later and I am still in pain. Not much can be done about a bruised tailbone, so I am just waiting for it all to heal up. And as I said it has been over a year with minimal use, so I can not even return this POG. Save your money and get a chair from a reputable company!!! Compact, light weight, but very dangerous. Not worth the weight trade off.

I purchased this Btr stool in August of 2021 when I was in search of a lightweight chair for a backcountry hunt. This fit all of my criteria; packable, lightweight and comfortable. It worked very well and I now use this thing all the time for hiking, camping, hunting and even a couple sporting events. If I know I’ll be sitting on this for more than a couple hours I bring a small foam pad and can sit on it comfortably all day. I’ve now purchased 2 more as gifts for relatives since it’s worked so well. Reason for 4 stars is that after 3 months of use after initial purchase the plastic piece in the middle that holds the legs together snapped. At 190 pounds I was a little upset that it broke so fast. I contacted hillsound, sent a picture of it broken and they sent me a new one right away. Haven’t had any issues since. Even though it broke once I would still recommend this product to anyone.

I have both the 14” and 17” models of this stool. They have been handy for wildlife photography hikes when I need to sit in one place for a while to take photographs. These were selected because they were the lightest and most compact folding stools I could find. The weights and dimensions listed in the brand description are accurate. Either will fit in a backpack, but I usually attach the collapsed stool to my belt and I don’t really notice it while hiking. There is a stretchable cord attached to the seat cover that hooks into a fabric loop or metal ring to keep the things together when collapsed. I originally used this to attach it to my belt, but I now use a dedicated strap for that purpose that is easier to handle. The stools are very strong and durable, and they look like they will last for a long time. Once extended, the legs lock in place when the seat is twisted into the “open” position. The stools have never collapsed in use nor have the legs bent or the seat fabric torn. Each leg has a flat rubber foot that increases the surface area in contact with the ground, and this tends to improve stability and keep the legs from sinking into soft surfaces. The seat will detach for cleaning, but I have not had to do that yet. I first got the 14” model because of its smaller size and weight. However, being an older person I have found that the increased height and larger seat of the 17” model is easier for me to use and more comfortable. I haven’t noticed the slight increase in weight and size when attached to my belt. I am very satisfied with this product.

I got the 17” and it suits me just fine at 5’7”, 170 lbs. The stool opens by separating it at the top not the bottom. Once open, keep extending each leg until you hear a solid click. If you don’t hear a click, then it’s not locked and that leg will collapse.

When you first get the stool, you need to learn how the extendable legs lock in place. I was not aware of the fact that the legs only lock when sprawled out in the sitting position. I also did not know that you need to check each leg to be sure it is locked before putting your full weight on the chair. I am always super careful to check the legs as I sit down, after having one harmless tumble. I have a connective tissue disorder, which means I can't stand for very long without pain. Standing more than 10 minutes can actually make me pass out, so I started carrying the Slacker Stool. While that has worked great for years, it is very heavy and doesn't collapse. In comes the BTR stool to save the day!! The BTR stool is so lightweight, I can clip it in the shoulder strap of my backpack with a carabiner (not included), and it really doesn't get in the way. It's like having a water bottle there, honestly. It is so easy to set up once you know the above two facts. Just extend the legs first, release the seat bungee, then splay the legs apart. This is the point to check all of the legs to be sure they are locked out. Place it on level ground, as uneven ground stresses parts differentially so that one part is more likely to fail (as seen in reviews). Following these guidelines, as well as the printed instructions on the attached tag has made using this stool super sturdy. I am 5'10" with long bones, and the 17" seat height provides me with enough height that my knees are at nearly 90°. It's just about the perfect height, and I have knee issues so getting up can be hard from anything lower. The seat is a firm micro mesh. It allows for airflow on your nethers which is nice in heat waves. I use this primarily on a daily basis for sitting short periods. Good example would be walking my dog when he seems more interested in sniffing the air for 10 minutes than doing his business and I start getting dizzy. If I deploy the stool when he seems more interested in sniffing, I can avoid a fall passing out. The light weight and quick deploy means I will grab this over all other seating options unless I am overnight camping, when back support becomes an issue.

This is my second purchase of this. I got one for myself for hunting. My brother liked it a lot so I got him one as a gift. A stool or chair can be one of your heavier items for backpacking or hunting. This is very light and ideal for hunting when going scouting or glassing. It is a little pricey but it has also lasted me two seasons. My recommendation for repositioning is to stand up and pivot, not twist in the stool. I read multiple reviews that by twisting in the stool they bent out the legs. I’m 180lbs and it’s still working great. If you are looking for a camp seat with a back for comfort then this isn’t your solution. If you backpack a lot of distance and want to cut down to a light weight option while sacrificing comfort I would absolutely suggest this product. For me, I sit in the stool for a hour or two at a time when glassing or taking breaks. It fits me fine and I’ll probably get another when this wears out.
