Description

Building in the hills is an enterprise full of unpleasant surprises and traps just waiting to snare the inexperienced. Arthur Levin, a structural engineer and architect who has been involved in more than 2,000 hillside projects, offers a distillation of his 35 years of experience that will help the uninitiated to avoid the otherwise inevitable pitfalls and traps. The book has many real life examples of the unexpected encounters with unstable land, surface drainage problems, subterranean water, demanding owners, uncooperative building inspectors, inexperienced contractors, and other examples of the author's triumphs and occasional enlightening failures. All of these brief histories are instructive and guaranteed to be of invaluable help to the first or second time hillside designer and builder. More than 110 line drawings illuminate the text. • Tackling sloping lots: Structural Engineer meets Architect
Format: Paperback
Lean and concise. Highly vetted prescriptive methods for the ever challenging sloping lots. A beautiful hybrid perspective from the mind of an architect and structural engineer. A must have permanent addition to your building methods library!

  • Bought this half way through the process
Format: Paperback
We purchased a very challenging piece of hilly property in a area we fell in love with. We have worked with a team of highly competent professionals, but have still made a major effort to understand what needs to be done and what people need to be on the "team". This book was excellent reinforcement that we are on the right track with the preliminary analysis of the hill and gave good insight on foundations so we can bring some understanding to the table as we work through the design with our various engineers and contractors. It was also great that the book wasn't a 700 page textbook. I went through it on a business trip and will read/scan it again later. ... show more

  • this book is a pretty good overview of what goes into a hillside home
Format: Paperback
I bought this because the author is the structural engineer who designed the foundation of my home and it is sort of featured in the book so I have a bias... Still as a novice with an interest in home building, this book is a pretty good overview of what goes into a hillside home. The principals seem current in that I can see them still used in new hillside homes being built in my neighborhood. ... show more

  • This is a good handbook for property owner/builders who need to consider debate ...
Format: Paperback
This is a good handbook for property owner/builders who need to consider debate options from a high level, it doesn't get into fine grain details which a CIVIL engineer would understand, which makes it easier to digest by non-engineers. The information that is missing from the book are insights into cost of geo-report, soil-drill-tests, excavation, and alternate cost effective approaches to the more costly techniques such as post & beam. ... show more

  • Easy Read
Format: Paperback
Prior to buying, I decided to make use of my taxpayer-fiunded local Library and borrow the thing via inter-library loan. Anyways... its an easy read and I polished it off in single night before bed. Do be advised, however, this is nowhere near to being a comprhensive, all-inclusive, how-to, DIY step-by step process negating actual professional consults and construction teams! What this DOES do is map out the elementary BASICS what to expect, consider, and most importantly points out many potential Legal and construction PITFALLS and failures to avoid or prevent. Also shows varios archtiectural design to encourage new owner builder options. This is not a construction or engineering text, and though possibly obsolete by current Local or NAtional building Code or Regulation.. some basic geology and structional engienering physics never change and makes for light reading review and gives reader , property owner new ideas ... show more
