  • Small Vice
Summary - Fantastic small vice, especially for small living spaces (like an RV), or inability to permanently mount a vice. Pros: * Small, Light, and Portable - This vice is smaller than I expected. It's not tiny, but the jaw-width is 3.25 inches, height (from table) is 2.0 inches and total length (including handle) is 12.25 inches. * Smooth operation - Overall, all of the operations are smooth so far. It has decent clapming force, but perhaps not quite on the same level as a bench-vice. * Table Mount - The table mount allows you to easily add and remove it from any table up to about 2 inches thick. It operates like most table mounts * Non-Rectangular Clamp - The posts on the top allow you to clamp some items of unusual non-flat shapes (see photo). Cons/Mixed: * Medium-Light Duty - This won't provide the same clamping force or utility as a dedicated, permanently mounted bench vice. * Non Rotating - Many bench-vices can be rotated. This one is only in the direction of the table. * Metal Posts Easy to Lose - The 4 metal posts in the top of the vice aren't really "secured" so if you remove the vice from the table, pick it up at an angle, your posts might fall out and roll across the floor under a nearby couch, rock, or other item. I managed to lose a post in the first few minutes of having the vice, though thankfully I found it again. I'd recommend either gluing the posts, adding some kind of material around the posts inside the vice for friction, or if you happen to have small magnets around, glue 4 of them in the bottom. * No transport container/bag - Because there are several individual parts, you'll want to keep them together somehow. You could close the clamp to hold the two table-mounts, however the 4 posts you'll probably want to glue them in as I mentioned above. So long as you're aware of what you're buying, this is about a 4.5 star small portable vice. However, if you have a more permanent workbench setup, I'd probably go with a more typical vice. ... show more

  • Nice vice with a few issues
This is a nice vice to add to my workbench, but it did need a little work. Two screw clamps hold the vice against a workbench surface. The clamps are large enough to accommodate must workbench arrangements I do not expect the clamping arrangement to hold the vice steady if you are applying heavy pressure to a work piece. The vice jaws open to just over 4.5" (11.5cm). There is a knurled surface on the jaw faces to help in gripping whatever is being held, and faces each have a notch for gripping pipes. Work pieces that are an odd shape may be able to get gripped by the four rods that are inserted in the top surface of the vice. These rods are not screwed or otherwise held in place and will fall out if the vice is turned upside down when being carried. I was a little concerned about the overall design with the bottom face of the jaws sliding along the surface the vice is mounted to. When the vice was tightly clamped to the table surface, it was difficult to open and close the jaws. I'm glad that I was first using it on a junk benchtop with a surface that I did care much about. One of the screws that holds a jaw together protruded from the bottom surface and was scratching the benchtop as I opened and closed it. Tightening the screw further did not eliminate the problem. I needed to sand down the head of the offending screw. I also placed tape over the bottom faces of the jaws to further protect the surface it is mounted on. ... show more

  • An OK vise suited for a limited set of tasks
To be honest, I felt that this vise is kind of a disappointment. Quality of construction and assembly is reasonably good, but I think the item description oversells the utility of this tool. I would never think to use this on any type of mechanically stressful task, but would only consider it for holding a light weight item being worked on. It does come with some clamping pins that allow gripping odd shaped items. I wanted to like it, but I can't wholeheartedly recommend this item. ... show more

  • Review: Heizo Bench Vise Exec Summary: Nice way to work with pieces when bench dogs won't work
It may seem like an odd observation but very often being able to work with woodworking pieces successfully means having a stable way to hold parts that are, often, oddly shaped, in a way that you can shave, carve, cut, etc. without the piece actually moving. On my worktable, I have bench dogs that do this, but often bench dogs either won't work with smaller pieces or can actually damage the piece you are trying to hold. The Heizo Bench vise is well designed to hold these pieces firmly when a workbench and dogs will not work. Example, I have a drawer part I was making that was oddly shaped. If I used a bench dog on it, the impressions from the pressure of the dogs would likely have remained forever. I used this Heizo vise grip and it help the part, let me shape it and perfect it and afterwards, there were no marks or disfigurements in the piece. All in all, it did exactly what I'd hoped, did it well and I'm glad I have this as an addition to my workshop. Its easy to use, surprisingly versatile and well made. I expect it to last for a long time. I recommend it if you have a workshop and sometimes work with small pieces or with pieces that are too awkward to fit well into a normal workbench/workdog configuration. ... show more

  • Handy Small Bench Vise
This is a small, sturdy bench vise. My only complaint is that there is no place to store the round pins that get inserted into the top of the vise for holding odd shaped objects. Also those pins fall out (they are not magnetic) when you turn the vise over.

  • You need one!
This thing is fabulous! It's one of those things that I didn't know I couldn't live without. It's extremely flexible, you can even use the clamps on the dynamic jaw instead of the static jaw. I don't know why you would use that, but it's a nice available option. I only wish it came with a case, but it doesn't, so I'm keeping the styrofoam it was shipped with. I've used it several times now for drilling, soldering, and gluing, and it worked perfectly. ... show more
