This tool is larger and therefore more functional than I was expecting from the pictures and description. It is heavy for its size. It comes with minimal instructions and to me the ad description wasn’t too helpful either. I really wasn’t sure this was a tool that would serve my needs when I ordered it. Thankfully the tool is easy to figure out and it works great. On the bottom of the tool there are 4 screws or bolts (2 on each side) that tighten toward the middle. These bolts are placed straddling the joist and tightened on either side with attached levers (like on a bench vice). Once in place on the joist, the jaws point toward and perpendicular to the deck board needing some persuasion to move into alignment. Then it is simply a matter of using the long top handle in a back and forth motion like a horizontal jack. With each move of the handle away from the board the ratchet clicks the jaws toward and against the board. Once the board is secured in place the jaws are released by pushing the long handle all the way forward. For building decks this tool is super helpful. However, I think I will find many other ways to use the tool. With some creative bracing, this tool might be helpful to bring the exterior frame of the deck (or a concrete form) into square alignment by jacking into the corner joint. Turned on end, the tool could be used to hold and adjust a farm gate to the proper height when it is being hung. I like multifunctional tools and I believe this tool qualifies as multifunctional. The tool comes with an extra spring and another piece, both of which I think are replacement parts, but I haven’t fully investigated their purpose yet.

This seems to be a well made item from what I can tell with my DIY eyes. In the next few weeks I'm going to be installing some boards over joists, and this will work really well to help me keep those boards straight and looking nice. It's got some solid heft to this, and I think it would take a really big board for this to not work. I don't know how fast it will be to use; basically you put this over the joist, slide it up to the board you want to straighten, and then clamp it down using the 4 clamps (2 on each side). Then you can use the ratchet handle on top to push the board closer to the wall/further away from the tool. So if you have to tighten and untighten 4 clamps each time you do a new board that is a bit of a hassle. However, I think for a lot of boards you could probably get by with just using 2 clamps, and also keep in mind that depending upon the width of the boards if you space it far enough away from the 1st board you are working on you may be able to retract it further and work on a second board before you need to move it back via unclamping. Overall it's a great product and will definitely help out with bowed or crooked boards.

These are perfect given the fact that most deck boards come bent, this tool will save you alot of time and effort. Its easy to install onto joists or rafters and allows you to clamp down and push the deck board into place. Even if the board is straight, but you need it to fit tightly, these are the perfect tools for the job.

This seems like a pretty nice quality tool. The last time I needed a tool like this we ended up just strong arming it. The job wasn't fun. I had been looking for a tool to use to make my work easier and I was considering one of the fully manual tools but I decided to go with this tool instead. This isn't as fast as one of the other tools so if you're working with a whole crew of people then the quicker manual tool might be better for you. I'm usually working solo or with one other person and this tool works well for me. Even solo I can get the (small) job done fairly easily. Something big and you probably need more than one tool. The ratcheting mechanism is the genius part of this and I think it's really helpful.
