  • A fun game when you need an afternoon adventure
Style: Betrayal at House on the Hill
This is not a quick game, but it's a fun way to spend the afternoon on a rainy, cold or snowy day. We played as adults and teens, and our teens played with friends, and all groups found it fun and entertaining. Lots of different adventure options, but best directed at people who really love board games, as it does require some setup and reading. Much lighter than D&D, but more than Uno or Monopoly. ... show more

  • Great game gets an update, but I’m not sure yet if it’s all improvements *Updated*
Style: Betrayal at House on the Hill
I have been a fan of Betrayal at House on the Hill 2nd Edition for years, but since my son took that one to college I was excited to pick up the new 3rd Edition. The new version has been updated and streamlined quite a lot, and I think all the changes are individually great. Taken collectively, I’m wondering if maybe the game is now a bit too streamlined. I need a few more plays to be sure, but I suspect it strongly. The Good: The new artwork is much more vibrantly colored, without being cartoony. The Haunt Roll can no longer trigger on the first or second Omen card There are significantly fewer tiny little tokens to keep track of. The overall gameplay is the same as the previous version, and there are still 50 different possible Haunts. The players can now choose a background reason for why they are exploring the House, which affects the style of Haunts they will trigger, rather than it being completely random. The Less Good: Fewer Omen cards may mean less thematic variety in the Haunts Unpainted grey figurines are less immersive than the fully painted figures from the previous version. Certain rooms have had their special effects simplified, nerfed, or removed Players may no longer steal items from other players, so less interaction Player haunt information is now open - no keeping secrets from your opponents So, in a nutshell, it’s still a great game but I have concerns that it may have been over-simplified. I’ll have to play a few more games to check. UPDATE: I have now played several more games, and I regret to say that my initial impressions were right. Don’t misunderstand me, it’s still a great game and highly recommended, and I will still play it and enjoy it, but for people who played and loved the 2nd Edition, this one will feel kind of nerfed in comparison. If you never played the 2nd Edition, or played it and found it too fiddly or overcomplicated, then this version may be exactly what you’re looking for. ... show more

  • Great game, bad shipping
Style: Betrayal at House on the Hill
Absolutely love the betrayal game. Got the new edition for my sister as I've heard its more balanced than the 2nd edition. But, shipping is terrible. Amazon thought it'd be a great idea to put this game in a bag instead of a box to ship. What arrived was the muddiest nastiest bag and it was completely open. The game itelf is shrinkwrapped thank goodness and survived with a few dents in the box, but I seriously thought about returning it. I don't care how much cheaper Amazon is the next time, I'm not getting anymore boardgames from them. ... show more
