  • Fun Retro Handheld, With a Few Minor Quirks
This little handheld game device is actually pretty cool, especially for the price. It comes loaded with a ton of classic games and is a fun throwback. The screen is decent, and it’s great for keeping kids entertained (or even adults who love retro games). That said, there’s a bit of input lag on some games, and navigating the game list isn’t the most user-friendly. The buttons also feel a bit basic. But overall, it works well and delivers a lot of fun in a compact package. ... show more

  • Misleading and Dishonest Advertisement
NOT 500 games!! This is a lie. The titles start to repeat themselves and change the order they are in. This is very misleading and disappointing.

  • A lot of 8-bit for the buck
The media could not be loaded. An obsolescent monitor recently crossed my path that had every video connector under the sun, reaching back from HDMI to the dawn of time, and I'd have it still if it hadn't developed a permanent line of bad pixels, along with inexplicable screen crazing. I'm sorry it had to go because it's hard to come by a monitor with RCA video connections these days. You'll need one to test these games in two-player mode as far as I can tell, but I could be wrong. Actually, I'm not certain about much with this oddball unit; the controls seem to enable and disable in unexpected ways, and it's not as if all 500 games come with documentation! There actually are 500 selections, and clearly they were not programmed just for this retro handheld but at one time lived independently as arcade games. The copyright dates visible on the splash screens range from late 80’s to early 90’s, and in the future this gizmo might serve as the Rosetta Stone of 8-bit archaeology, or the monastic library of otherwise lost works. I haven't found a game that hits that sweet spot between challenge and frustration, nor been able to lose myself in the crude graphics—a test made harder by the cryptic control behavior and uncertainty whether the games are really playable at all—but maybe you or someone you know will find this, so I grade it out of admiration and hope rather than certainty. The 8-bit soundtracks though are superb, and rendered perfectly on the speaker built into the handset. ... show more

  • Super fun handheld video games!
I got this generic Nintendo/Gameboy for my son and he loves it! He's a little too young and doesn't really understand how to play any of the games yet, but he loves having his own video game! I haven't hooked it up to the TV yet, but he is gonna absolutely love that setting once we show it to him. The 500 games are a little excessive, and a lot of them are repeated multiple times, but I am really impressed with some of the games included like Tiny Tunes Adventures, Dr Mario, and Treasure Island! I love that there's no lag on the games, so playing games like Super Mario 3 are exactly as I remember. The screen size is perfect for a handheld, and it's easy to use and learn how to play especially if you already know what you're doing. I honestly wish I would've gotten this for myself, and I think it's pretty great for the price. My only issue is that it doesn't seem to fully charge or hold a charge for as long as I'd like, and the charger seems flimsy. I also wish they would have put some form of Sonic even though I know that was Sega not Nintendo, but they could have put a knockoff version since they put so many games. ... show more

  • Old school gaming at its... finest? - game corruption and poor battery life
When I ordered this system, I was really excited. As a parent, I'm always on the lookout for something I think my kids might enjoy. Initially, when I pulled the device from the box, I had high hopes. Granted the plastic build quality wasn't the greatest and the (360) slider was just another 8 direction dpad (not an analog control) in a slightly different form. However, the buttons felt OK, it fit my kids' hands well and with the second included controller, it seemed like it might be something they'd enjoy. As per the instructions, we immediately plugged it in, charged the console and patiently waited to give it a try. Once charged, we fired up the console. The first thing I noticed was the screen quality. While I wasn't expecting anything that would blow me away, this screen managed to come in under my expectations. The refresh was uninspiring and the backlighting seemed like it was in gradients, similar to the triton labs mod that people used to install on the original GameBoy Advance before it came with built-in backlights. However, even some of that could be forgiven considering the cost. My real problems came with both the battery life and the games. First, lets address the battery. According to the seller, this device charges in about 1 hour, which I found to be true. However, it claims you get up to 5 hours of use. It was my, repeated, experience that I would get approximately 15 - 20 minutes of use and the backlight would slowly dim over the next 2-3 minutes until it was completely dark. The sound still played and I confirmed with a flashlight that there was still an image on the screen. Unfortunately, without a backlight it was unplayable. Leaving the unit on also found that it would die not long after the backlight died (generally within another 5 - 10 minutes). In terms of the games, yes, there is a lot of them. There are a number of 8-bit titles I recognize as well as a variety of games that I have no idea what they were. However, many of them seemed like mods or something that didn't actually exist and were some type of homebrew creation. For the games I tried, very few of them would successfully run. When I'd try to start a game I had roughly a one in four chance that it would actually run. The rest of the time I would either get a blank screen that never changed until I rebooted the console or I would get a screen reminiscent of the old Nintendo cartridges after they'd been used and sitting on the shelf for a while - screen corruption and fragmentation. Completely unplayable. While my kids have not yet given up on this console, they are very persistent in trying to get some of the games to work, I have. I've put in plenty of time with this to make sure I gave it a fair shot and wasn't doing something wrong. When it does work, it's passable. However, that seems to be the exception rather than the rule. I was going to give this game 2 stars but, since the battery is removable and I don't have a replacement to try, its possible the battery and backlight issues stem from a bad battery. Because of this, I am giving it a generous 3 stars due to the fact I still was unable to play many of the games. If you're in the market for an inexpensive handheld device like this, I would strongly encourage you to look elsewhere. Even if this console worked as described, you can find other systems with better construction and screen quality for roughly the same price. ... show more

  • Fun handheld game
My 12 year old grandson loves this handheld game. It's cool for long car rides, waiting rooms, or just playing at home. The games are fun and challenging, and the graphics are colorful and engaging. I couldn’t figure how to play the games but seems to have done so. The device is durable and easy to use, with a user-friendly interface that my kid can navigate easily. The battery life is also great, lasting for hours on a single charge. ... show more
