    • Fantastic for Sound Practice, and the Tiny Objects Are Irresistible
My 5-year-old is nonverbal, but she can do a lot of mimicking, and she is constantly showing us just how much she understands. So I teach her just like I would any of my other kids. She and my 3-year-old both LOVE sitting down with me and talking about these little figurines. I try to limit us to four different sounds at a time. They would strongly prefer that we dump all 176 tiny objects onto the table at once, because apparently that is much more exciting. 😂 And honestly, I understand the appeal. Miniature objects are just inherently fun for little kids. We follow a Montessori approach, so I already have a collection of more realistic miniatures that I've gathered for sound work. The problem is that tracking down objects for every sound is surprisingly difficult, so I really appreciate having a complete, organized set like this. There are four objects for each sound, and one thing worth knowing is that the target sound isn't necessarily at the beginning of the word. I initially found that a little more complicated than my other set, where I specifically use starting-sound objects like apple or astronaut. On the other hand, this gives us practice actually listening for sounds in the middle and end of words too, so I can appreciate the reasoning behind it. I also really like the individual little boxes. My kids did, of course, dump everything out one day, and my older daughter and I had to sort all 176 pieces back into their homes. It actually turned into a pretty good project! Thankfully, the inside of each lid tells you exactly which four objects belong in that box, so putting everything back was completely doable. Overall, this is a really engaging phonics resource. The organization is excellent, the little objects keep my younger kids interested, and there are a lot of different ways we can use it as their skills develop. ... show more

As a homeschooling parent working on speech and language goals with my son, I am always hunting for hands-on tools that combine structured literacy with actual, engaging play. We own quite a few hand2mind products because their quality is always great, but this Mini Object Phoneme set is our absolute favorite by far. The value you get out of this is incredible. What both my son’s speech therapist and I appreciated the most right out of the box is that you can genuinely just open it up and go. The whole system is just so thoughtfully put together. It actually stays organized, too. It’s one thing for a product to arrive looking nice and neat, but it’s an entirely different story trying to keep it organized after your kids have used it a bunch of times. This design completely solves that. Each little toolbox is color-coded by its sound category, including consonants, long vowels, and short vowels, which makes sorting a breeze. Plus, there is a clear word list printed right inside the lid of each individual box. It completely eliminates any guessing about what a tiny object is supposed to represent, so my son and I can easily put things right back where they belong when we are done. The boxes themselves are a great size, providing plenty of room if you ever wanted to add your own mini objects to a specific sound category later on. High-quality and highly engaging: Our son is completely captivated by this set. He absolutely LOVES the mini objects and stays focused with them. You get 176 unique pieces, with 4 for each of the 44 English sounds, and they are bright, colorful, well-crafted, and extremely durable. They are definitely built to last through years of heavy use. We brought this into our routine specifically for sound recognition, vocabulary, and articulation therapy, and it has been seamless. The included activity guide has some wonderful, Science of Reading-aligned ideas, but the objects themselves are so versatile for everyday learning. We’ve been using them in sensory bins, hiding them in rice or beans for a tactile sound hunt, and for vocabulary bingo games. We honestly couldn't be more pleased with this set. It’s brilliantly designed, and our son’s speech therapist likes it so much she’s already ordering one for her own caseload!
