THE best yet.
Edition: Standard
Astonished by the graphics and amazed by how much more of a real driving simulation it is, Gran Turismo 5 DELIVERS. The first thing I did though was look at the trophy list after installing. If there are any platinum trophy freaks like me this one has work cut out for you. One of them i noticed was Gold star in all license, events, and single events. If you ever played a GT then you know there are easily over 300 races, just me popping through the menus I think there are definitely 300 but I could be wrong... not to mention the endurance races. Now for the graphics... I honestly must say that this just might be the best looking racing game ever if not, tell me what is. As for the game play its a step up from gt4 in simulation but not anymore difficult. The only problem i see with GT5 so far is the loading times. I'm use to fast load times on other games but this is not the case for GT5, but I don't care because each race is worth the load time, oh and by the way I'm sure after a few races one would just get use to the load times, every race I have done so far I have just admired every detail that the developers put in to it. I would recommend every ps3 owner to have this game if you are into racing games, however, if you like need for speed or any other type of arcade game GT5 is nothing like those games. If you have never tried a Gran Turismo game before I suggest you rent this or play it on a display before you buy so you know what your getting into. Have fun, Happy Thanksgiving to all. EDIT: Although amazing I have been finding flaws which remind me of the huge mistake of releasing Gran Turismo 2 in the state that it was in. I'm having fun racing but the B-spec mode SUCKS......... Its twice as long as a-spec and you cannot speed it up like GT4. I really think these guys just sat around and got drunk or just hanged out for the 5 years of development because in 5 years they should have been able to have the usual amount of races for each class. This time around there are hardly any rally races and at times the graphics shop up like crazy. I loved gran turismo sense day one of me playing it. Although i feel let down. I hope us fans don't have to wait 6 more years. Seriously I love gran turismo but i cant see myself playing it as much as I did the previous GT's because its extremely short when compared to the previous games. I wanted more races. All we can hope for is gt 6 soon, or at least some add- on content. ... show more

The top race game by far
Edition: Standard
This game series continues to impress. the graphics are a step up from the last version and pretty incredible. This all is nice but if the game stinks who care what it looks like. this is not the case here. The gaming experience is just awesome. Realistic is all I have to say. If you are looking for a need for speed or midnight club dumb down race experience you will not find this here and you will not like this game. This is for people who want a real driving experience and a little more of a challange than most race games. IE how much throttle, when, how much braking and when, car set up, gear ratio, what drive train, ECT is all critical to your lap time as is the car set up as it all interacts and is all critical. If you tweak something or setting a bit too much yuor car will be off the track or banging into walls. you will need to do a bit of educating yourself on what camber angle and toe angle and bound and reboun do or how the spring rate or ride height do to car preformance if you are not a series verteran but it is worth the effort. I have not played on line yet as there is probally pretty limited people as the game was just released but I am sure it will be better than the last version as everything else is. I got this on a release day delivery from Amazon and have logged about 60 hrs over the thanksgiving weekend. This is additive. It does take a bit of time in the GT mode to get to the good cars but even driving the low end cars is a lot of fun and really teaches you the race lines on each track. the go cart is a nice addition as is the nascar element. I can not wait for my playseat and my g27 stearing wheel and pedals to get here so far using the regular PS controller but still good. Have not tried the 3D yet as I am waiting for the glass to be delivered. I here from a buddy though that the 3D is great and a must. ... show more

If you like cars, but arent the guy in Fast & Furious...
Edition: Standard
Pros- The Game has an incredibly Vast amount of content, Cars & challenging trials to go along with a competitive online mode.. The graphics are above average , the game play is superb. Its addictive..(guess that can be bad too) Cons-Load times in the beginning are tedious, only slightly tedious once installed to disk. Thats the only complaint worth mentioning in my opinion. Wheel support is acceptable & online issues are being resolved over time.. GAME PLAY- Forgive me for going all over the place, but I will try my best to put you in the game. The game is incredibly fun to play, there is incentive to race & not stop, to get better so that you can get more credits to buy better cars(If you love cars the game is worth it just to see them all, drive them all and modify them, you can install your own wheels & select paint/Colors on most of the cars that you acquire). The idea is to raise your level of experience so that you can compete in harder races as you go along, which will earn you more credits the higher your level..Its not easy to get bored because you are always buying a new car or racing a new track or type of race which presents new challenges.. You can race in karts which is pretty intense yet a fun change of pace, there is a Nascar Jeff Gordon tutorial to play around with and try out..There is rally car racing, an event for Pickups and much more silly things like racing the Volkswagon van or Minis or Toyota Yaris events.. You have certain events for Ferraris or Lamborghinis only & typically you will win a car that is mandatory for the event upon winning Gold in the entire event(it would be nice to have the car prior to, but thats part of the game knowing the right cars to buy to use for different events..For example an event may read "Japanese Classics" (& you would then have to drive a 60s or 70s Japanese vehicle to enter that race, you will notice distinctive differences in how the cars behave & sound,a car will not stay on the road doing 150mph with standard tires or even sport, you will have to splurge on racing tires when your cars are really moving, get the wrong transmition upgrade & you will lose power, You get the idea, things you do will make differences for the most part, not sure if the oil change makes a difference or how much of an impact weight reduction really has on in game cornering, but its cool to be able to do all the fun car stuff, all be it oversimplified & sometimes far fetched! thats cool enough for me. Now if you just finished racing Chan for slips & have NOS in your car, you may not like the game if you bought it expecting all of the subtle nuances of driving & wish to smell burning rubber!lol However if you like being able to ride in and hook up a bunch of different real cars from a bunch of different Decades (I mean there are Challengers, Vettes, Mustangs, Camaros for the Muscle lovers, Skylines from all years, GTRs, Supras, Old Type R Civic Hatches,Acura NSX, THere are a ton of Audis, Jaguars, Supercars like Lambos, Ferraris, Racing editions of Production cars. Its ridiculous(there are even a boatload of regular cars that you have probably owned & will get a kick out of supercharging and hooking up), I cant name a hundreth of the content or available cars.... You can even learn about tons of cars and collect photos & information about classic cars throughout history just from playing, they are called Museum Cards, you get them just for logging in & playing each day. Now Ive only raced a few times online, but it seems to be enjoyable as long as you can figure out which race you belong in, it is a little hard to Navigate through the users and races, but once I got in it was fun, I did not experience any lag or glitches & I have The faster of the available Cable internet, not sure if thats why. I cant give you an in depth online review as I mostly play GT Mode bc at 3 hours a day for 10 days Im just approaching half of the A Spec content. B Spec is where you are the crew guy Coaching a driver to win the race, you will find that the driver doesnt need much coaching when given a good car & its cool to do the B Spec when your watchin TV to Earn credits when your not able to play, I just hit the Input button watch TV & turn back when I think the race is over.. Not fun bc you are not racing, but I think the idea here is to teach you another aspect of racing & for you to watch the approach you should take in various scenarios, Id rather race but whatever, its there. Graphics- I will speak in Overall terms, the Graphics are superb, Cars look like the cars they are made to, the roads look like roads, the Cockpit views available on a lot of the cars are recognizable as the cars they are intended to. As far as Graphics I was not disappointed nor blown away, but I think Gameplay is the strong suit.. WHEELS- Now This is a subject Im very interested in, the Logitech Driving Force GT is the official Force Feedback wheel supported by the game, meaning its fully Customizable buttons, sequential Shifter(not H pattern,it just goes up or Down) & pedals shifters all function with the game. Amazon is now selling it for 100 bucks shipped free which isnt bad to see how you like using a wheel which has great reviews. but I like the idea of The H pattern stick in the G25 or newer 27 and Fanatec 911 GT3/Clubsport line.. Ive read that the 27 wheel will function fine from a few different sources, but the buttons are not customizable which is something to consider.. The Fanatec 911 GT3 RS Wheel has 3 Feedback Motors and is probably the best WHEEL out right now, all be it expensive(around 180 bucks for the wheel alone) if you need to buy the 6 plus one shifter & H pattern along with pedals as they are sold seperately on the Fanatec site.. Another wheel being touted as the "GT5 Official Wheel" is the Thrustmaster T500 RS Wheel..(Polyphony claims this may be the new GT5 top quality wheel) This wheel is the newest from Thrustmaster(which has a marginal reputation for wheels so far), and as of 12/16/10 I dont even believe its for sale yet, but pictures are available & if this wheel does come out soon GT5 will support it as Thrustmaster is marketing it as "the" wheel for the game.. The wheel has new Feedback Technology that may escalate Thrustmasters wheels past The G25/27, but seeing is believing & what I believe to be around a 500 dollar price tag for what may ultimately be just a wheel & paddle shifters is too high(even if Im wrong & 500 gets pedals & a shifter), for that I would get the triple motored 911 wheel From Fanatec and get the pedals and H pattern Shifter for around 300 altogether, Also Logitechs Website is offering the G27 with a coupon as another reviewer stated for 269(dont get ripped off, shop around) all in all its a great wheel just not customizable buttons. Best advice is to get the Force GT if you dont own a wheel, see if you even like it bc its not a great expense at 100 bucks & you can always resell it.. Or if you want a top notch fully supported wheel, wait for Thrustmaster T500, Check out the Fanatec Wheels which are compatible with G27/25 Pedals & Sticks via an adapter Fanatec sells.. It would be nice if the "most detailed simulator" for Driving was proactive enough to fully support with customizable buttons all of the best wheels out right now.. But I think If you read between the lines most of them will work just fine..As in most things, it all depends on what you want & how much you're willing to spend for it. Please Comment if you can elaborate on any new wheel info as there is not much accurate feedback around on actual GT5 Tested wheels. ... show more

I feel like a real race driver
Edition: Standard
You should consider yourselves lucky that I'm even taking the time out from this game to write this review. Then again, my B-Spec driver is in a lengthy race, so no harm done. BUT ANYWAY! This game features your Arcade mode, a track creator, Gran Turismo T.V., and a Career mode. I haven't tried the T.V. mode (and can't right now because PSN is down), but the Career mode is where the bulk of the gaming is. The Arcade lets you try out some cars...keyword: SOME, and you go through the Career to unlock the rest. Some cars are fairly cheap and still perform well, i.e. the Corvette ZR1 I have with race mods. Race mods are modifications to the car that turn it into a race car. The interior, exterior, and some performance parts are upgraded to racing specs. Thing is, only 11 cars can be modified to race specs. That doesn't mean those 11 are dominant cars, however. The EVO IX (or VIII...don't remember) wouldn't beat my GT-R SpecV, considering both are fully modded and tuned properly. The only cars that are completely dominant over the others are (as they should be) race-built cars, like the Formula One car Ferrari uses or the LMP1 Audi R10 TDI, which was Audi's old LeMans car before the R15 was introduced. In this mode, you have plenty to do. You can participate in License challenges which get harder as you progress, you can try your luck in A-Spec races, or teach a driver to perform well in B-Spec races. A-Spec puts you behind the wheel in the races while B-Spec puts an A.I. driver behind the wheel. Eventually you begin to unlock special events that you can complete to level yourself up. The game splits the leveling system into A-Spec and B-Spec levels. A-Spec leveling is affected by License, A-Spec, and Special Event challenges, while B-Spec can only go up through B-Spec races. As everyone already knows, Gran Turismo has always been a simulation game, and was first released on the PlayStation. However, my first simulation racing game was Forza Motorsports on the original Xbox, which led me to the sequel on the 360. Since I no longer have a 360, I decided to check out GT5: Prologue, which, obviously, was the preview to this game. I liked it, and picked this up. I have to say, I haven't been playing anything else but this game. It's that amazing.....the gameplay, I mean. Let's start with the good things first. One thing I LOVE about the game is the realism. Even though I only played the Forza 3 demo, it failed to hold my attention the way Gran Turismo 5: Prologue did, and helps to the fact that I can hardly put this game down. It seriously feels like you're in the car, feeling every twist, turn, bump, jump, braking, oversteer, and understeer the car dishes out at you. If you're losing traction in the rear tires, you're going to feel it through the vibration and how your car handles while you're trying to control it through a corner. You can also feel whenever your car is going over a bumpy surface, and the sense of speed is simply amazing. I have yet to play a game where it actually scared me to go too fast because it's like the object is very far away, and suddenly it goes "SURPRISE! I'm right here! :D", which makes you drive more carefully when trying to generate a hot lap. Another thing that's wonderful is the cars. While I still missed the Tuned Corvette from Prologue (hardly now thanks to the ZR1), I love driving in a GT-R SpecV, or the Zonda R around Laguna Seca, just to see if I can beat my old times. Though this game features a total of 1,034 cars, only 220 of them are premium, meaning that only 220 cars in the game have damage and in-car views.......among other things, but I can't remember them right now, and they're really not that important, anyway. One I DO remember is standards only have one light setting (I think) while premium cars have two.....wow, how cool, right? Something I'll never see on my car unless I'm watching a replay or I'm ALWAYS looking behind me. There really isn't much I can say that would make anyone think differently about Gran Turismo, but is also good. It's almost impossible to not understand how realistic this game really is, from the tuning options (though no upgrading brakes.....weird) to being placed into the driver seat of (some of) the cars, you should already know what it has to offer by now. None of that has changed. But if you're new to the series, be warned that it is heavily aimed at enthusiasts and people who love cars. Everyone else is just going to see a big mess and won't understand it. Now for the bad... The menu, while it looks nice in some parts, can get a bit confusing when you're trying to look for something in the Career mode. It's not a huge issue, especially for me, since I can figure out almost anything pretty quickly, but it's not exactly the most user-friendly menu, either. Another thing I don't like are the standard cars. They spent around 6 years on this game, but only 220 cars are "premium"? There shouldn't even be a difference between them if you're going to spend 6 years on a game. Then again, Sony did want to heavily push the PS3's 3D capabilities, which isn't Polyphony Digital's fault, but it wasn't a good idea to have 220 cars be "better" than the others. Again, not a huge deal, but noticeable. I also don't understand why my B-Spec driver is sometimes incredibly stupid, even in situations where I would be able to come out in first place. Sometimes he won't shift properly, and other times he'll spin for no reason. They are programmed to make mistakes if they become too excited or too relaxed, but for being level 20, it seems as if some of these shouldn't happen. Maybe I'm not 100% understanding the system as of now.....but again, can't see why they would make foolish mistakes. Another thing I didn't like (and this is actually my fault) is I bought a car that I ended up winning a few races later. It's pretty sad to buy a 2.6million credit (credit is the currency used in this game) Zonda R, only to win it a half-hour after you bought it. Overall, I love Gran Turismo 5 for its gameplay, but some of the mistakes in the game shouldn't be there, considering it took them 6 years to develop it. Nevertheless, this is a game I'll be playing for a while, and won't leave my library any time soon. ... show more

This is Gran Turismo 5?
Edition: Standard
First let me say if you're just looking for a racing game; move along, this isn't what you're looking for. Gran Turismo is made for gearheads, anyone may enjoy the racing at first, but the level of realism Gran Turismo strives to reach won't be enjoyable for most people. That said, I am a die hard car guy, and a Gran Turismo fan as well... ...and I cant say I'm impressed with this addition to the Gran Turismo lineup. There's just so much where this game has failed to reach my expectations, especially with the huge wait for it's release; so I'm just going to throw whatever comes to mind right now out there, in whatever random order they come up. I like the goal of realism of this series; the graphics are good yes, but the audio, even after listening through the intended HD equipment, is decent, but not up to par. The actual game mechanics are sound like the previous games in this series. B-Spec. Wow. I understand the concept behind it. But to be honest, making it the exact same races as A-Spec makes it a big waste of time. If they made B-spec a smaller focus, like one of the challenge races, and expanded A-Spec that would be a much more welcome change. Challenge races: Love them. License tests: Variety and the usual formula: Love them. I like the extensiveness of the post-race analysis tools. Replays: no replays after split screen? Whether you take the opportunity to learn/teach your opponent, or rub the win in their face, the replays are an important piece to the split screen Gran Turismo experience, but its not there in this edition. 3D: Unfortunately, I have not experienced the advertised 3D capabilities of this game. Load times: Terrible. Even after the 50 minute initial optional install time, the load times are frequent and long. Improvement from the rest of the series: This is where I say I feel ripped off. I feel like for half of the game they took Gran Turismo 3 and improved on the graphics and little things here and there, and for another third of this game they took GT4 and did the same. And the rest was either luck or following the old GT formula. Car modification/purchase: I hate how not every vehicle is available for purchase from the dealer. Then I hate how when you buy a used car, you're limited with the customization of it. Also, no brake modifications? What were they thinking? And then with the painting, you can only use a color once? This is a rocky subject. I've probably missed a few topics, but the point is I'm disappointed. Overall: If you're a gearhead and have extra money laying around, I guess you could use this to get your fix. You'll enjoy it, especially if you've never had a Gran Turismo experience before. But if you have experienced Gran Turismo before and don't have extra money, I wouldn't stress myself to get it. Wait until GT6. ... show more

GT5 review (its a blast!)
Edition: Standard
Gran Turismo 5 is simply the best racing game of this generation bar none. I can tell you I have played a lot of both great arcade racers (Need for Speed:Shift, Forza Motorsports 3) and simulators this generation and Gran Turismo 5 outshines all others in every aspect! Graphically this game destroys the competition, earning the title of best raccing game graphics on any platform. That's right, there's no game even on PC that looks better, boasting 500,000 polygons per car versus, for example, forza 3's 170,000 and Need for Speed Shift's (when maxed out on the PC) 200,000. It is not only the new benchmark in graphics for a racing game, it also has one of the best physics systems in any game in recent years. The realistic rollover, stalling, tyre wear based on humidity and pressure in the air, real time damage, backfiring, engine and mechanical damage all help to make it the most realistic true-to-life handling racing game of this generation (It's definitely up there tied with iRacing and beating out Live For Speed) Not only that but the sounds are incredible too! There's been a massive improvement over Prologue, with each individual vehicle emitting its own respective grunt and transmission whine which, when you tune the car, changes the engine note completely just as in real life. As far as gameplay is concerned... Almost 70 tracks including Top gear test track, Nurburgring, Monza, track editor, day/night cycle, weather cycle, lifelike and complex AI, 1037 cars including appearances from Nascar, F1, F2, karting and more, Special drivers appearing in stages like Top Gear's Stig, Joey Logano, F1 champion Vettel, Sebastian Loeb and more. Not to mention split screen, 16 player online, extensive photomode (up to 8mp pictures) replays both sharable through download to XMB, instantly uploadable to youtube in glorious HD, B spec career mode (much like a racing manager) A spec career mode (a gruelling series of challenges, will definitely take you a while to complete this one!) GT life community, car museum, car tuning, car painting and there's probably even things I've missed out ;) There are faults however, during certain times of day there is a very prominent issue with low resolution dynamic shadows both across the track and the cars themselves. It's not a very big deal at all, nothing too detracting from what is still the best looking racer on any platform (even PC) but it's still there. There is also that replays in splitscreen mode aren't savable (as of yet, a post game release patch has been heavily rumoured) Also there is a slight inconsistency in some cars and tracks. About 100 "standard cars" look quite dated, like they've been ripped straight from GT4. However the remaining ~610 standard cars look very good. They are definitely on par with other racing games cars visually. To only have these few minute faults is a testament to the sheer polish and hard work put into this racer. The game is overwhelming in content and quality, far surpassing any racing game or simulator this generation. A must buy for anyone even remotely interested in cars. Ups -Polish -Content -Replay value Downs -Slight low-res shadow issue -lack of savable replays in splitscreen (pre-patch) -inconsistency in standard cars/tracks Score 9.8 Graphics I docked 0.2 due to the relative issue of the shadows but this really is the best looking racing game on any platform. With 500,000 polygons per car and astonishing attention to detail, there is not a better looking racer out there 9.7 Sound Great sounding cars, engine notes changing when tuning the exhausts.. they've really stepped up their game from prologue in this regard. 9.7 Gameplay Brilliant gameplay, with physics only matched by iRacing and definitely on par with LFS this game lives up to it's trademark from a gameplay standpoint. 9.5 Fun factor This really depends on whether you're a petrol-head or not, so to speak. If you are then this will be the most fun you've had with a game in a long time. If not then it will still be a gripping game, however maybe not on such a level as a motoring fan. 10.0 Online Exceptional and flawlessly integrated. Great social aspects and features - no more could be asked of the designers in this aspect. 9.8 Overall (out of 10 / not an average) ... show more

Simulation Driving at its best but AI still a problem.
Edition: Standard
A short review for those on the fence.. Its a great simulation driving game. For the long wait and multiple delays for release I think it is worthy because the graphics are second to none and driving experience is tops for car role and feel, however I knocked one star off because once the dust settles and you see clearly past the graphics the AI is on rails and there is NO car damage which begins to fusturate you after sometime. One of the reasons I feel the driving experience is better than expected is because I am using the GT wheel and I don't believe this or any other sim racing game can come close to its potential when using the controller to drive. One thing anyone not familiar with sim driving games is that this is not BLUR, which is an arcade style racing game, and comparing the two would be like apples and oranges. GT5 is a full scale racing sim game that takes time to get the hang of and something that can not be mastered over night because of its complexity along with there being tons of content that needs to be unlocked over time. All in all a great game for someone who truly loves cars and is willing to put the time in to really unlocking its potential. If you are on the fence and do decide to take the plunge you really need to get a wheel also otherwise your experience may be hindered, and it will never live up to what the creator envisioned. UPDATE: After now playing GT5 for a few days I have to say that I am changing my 4 star to 5 because I think I was to harsh on the AI when it isn't as bad as I thought and in the big picture this game is amazing. Now that I've been digging deeper into the game it really is great how must detail went into creating this game. Aside from the amazing graphics it just has so much to offer and I think I was being unrealistic at first because its release date was pushed so many times that I let my imagination run so high into the clouds that no game could live up too, but once the dust subsided this game really is phenomenal and you won't be sorry. Racing Fan
Edition: Standard
This game is designed for the hardcore enthusiasts out there. It's not a casual "pick-up and play" game. It's a SIMULATOR. Not necessarily do game critics have to compare this game in "fun factor" with the Need for Speeds, Dirts, or Burnouts... this is a very different game. In fact, i have F1 2010, Dirt 2, Midnight Club and Burnout Paradise. They are all great games, but still very different from Gran Turismo 5. I have the Driving Force GT.. and let me tell you.. it works wonders. I have tried the wheel with all the other games mentioned above and it's very responsive too. In terms of REALISM, GT5 excels by 1,000 miles. That's the real meat of this awesome game. The physics are truly perfect. Every car behaves differently, the sounds are superb too (it helps if you play with over-the-ear headphones, like me). The damage modeling system is not my sort of thing.. i mean, i normally race very clean and use the roof cam.. so i almost never look at my car's body as i'm racing. Sure, you can view the replay later, but damage really becomes such a little aspect of the game and sometimes i even forget it's there since i don't crash all that much. Another aspect of GT5 that i love is the massive content it has. More than 1,000 cars will keep you busy for a while. I'm at level 25 when i drive my races (it's called A-Spec).. and my driver level is at 26 (called B-Spec). Basically the game is divided into these 2 parts. If i go into details, i may never finish lol. The creator of the game, Yamauchi, has stated that he's changing standard cars to Premium Quality. That means that hopefully all the negative comments regarding Standard vs Premium cars will come to rest. Polyphony Digital is gifting away cars later this month (december), and there's a big patch coming at the end of said month too. AND Polyphony Digital will be making patches to the game, so this game will evolve a lot in the upcoming months. To sum my review: Racing Fans, get this game. For the rest of the casual crowd, try playing GT5 at a very slow pace.. and maybe you will get the hang of it. Cheers ... show more
