  • Nice for Nostalgia, Not for Chocolate Lovers
I don’t personally have a connection between gold coins and any particular holiday, but I remember having them occasionally as a kid, and they were always fun. I picked these up to have on hand for Christmas - part nostalgia, part sweet treat. The packaging is very nice: a glossy printed paper-covered, heavy-duty cardboard box, and the coins themselves are tightly pressed and cleanly foil-wrapped. Not a single edge was loose. In fact, it was almost too secure - I had to work a bit to get a fingernail under the foil to unwrap one. Once unwrapped, the chocolate shows a sharp imprint on both sides, though each of the three coins I opened had a small smudge or marred area. Nothing concerning, but noticeable. As for the chocolate itself, it’s not my favorite. When bitten, it has a waxy texture and the flavor reminds me of the inexpensive chocolate often used for holiday figures. It’s not terrible, and I can see how it might be nostalgic for some people, but it’s not something I’d reach for again. Letting it melt removes the waxy texture, but the flavor remains the same. Overall, the coins are nicely packaged, stamped, and foil-wrapped, but the chocolate quality doesn’t quite match the presentation. I also think the price is high for just a few ounces. That said, I imagine many people factor in the charm and nostalgia - both their own memories and the ones they’re creating for kids. ... show more

  • Tiny aluminum flakes in my chocolates.
The chocolate coins were tasty until I saw small flecks of aluminum in the chocolate. I had to dig them out with my nails before I felt safe eating it. I found this in most of the coins. I'm not sure how this happened, but I urge the company to please invest in better foil wrapping. The chocolate itself was good though, better than the usual brands that feel plastic-y if you know what I mean. Each chocolate is made to resemble the USA Kennedy half dollar coin, but in gold instead of silver. This appearance is fun, especially if you plan to gift to a coin collector. The price is a little steep, especially with the quality issue. I would only ask that you please proceed with caution and inspect each chocolate for aluminum flakes. If it did not have that problem, it would be 5/5. ... show more

  • Great gifts, okay chocolate
These chocolate coins are great for gifts and have a nice design on it when you open them. The chocolate itself tastes okay - not too sweet and not too milky but also not that good either in my opinion. It suffers a similar problem with other types of chocolates like these where the gold wrapping is hard to peel off so I always end up getting some on my nails trying to peel it off. Overall though, decent for gifts but not so if just for personal chocolate eating. ... show more

  • Better-than-average chocolate coins with great presentation
These chocolate coins turned out to be a fun little treat. The gold foil is shiny and tightly wrapped, which will make them perfect for stocking stuffers. The detailing on the foil is surprisingly good, and a fair amount of it transfers to the chocolate itself, giving them a nice finished look even after unwrapping. Flavor-wise, they’re about what you’d expect for chocolate coins, but honestly one of the better ones I’ve had in this format. Definitely not premium chocolate by any means, but solid for what they are. The size seems pretty close to a half dollar coin - maybe not exact, but close enough that kids won’t care once they get into them. Having seen plenty of chocolate coin variations over the years, I’d say this is one of the better ones out there, both in terms of taste and presentation. Reasonable value. ... show more
